Pope likens migrant holding centers to 'concentration camps' Posted: 22 Apr 2017 08:46 PM PDT By Philip Pullella ROME (Reuters) - Pope Francis urged governments on Saturday to get migrants and refugees out of holding centers, saying many had become "concentration camps". During a visit to a Rome basilica, where he met migrants, Francis told of his trip to a camp on the Greek island of Lesbos last year. Islamists had slit the throat of the man's Christian wife because she refused to throw her crucifix on the ground. |

"With The Daily Panic, I hope to cover and comment upon the news, satirise the frequently unsatirisable politics of Maldives," he wrote on his blog. |

Thousands join March for Science to fight 'alternative facts' Posted: 22 Apr 2017 11:54 AM PDT Thousands of people joined a global March for Science on Saturday with Washington the epicenter of a movement to fight back against what many see as an "assault on facts" by populist politicians. Hundreds streamed onto the Washington Mall for a festive day of music, speeches and teach-ins by scientists disturbed by the rise of so-called "alternative facts" around crucial issues like climate change following the election of Donald Trump. At a time when the Earth has marked three consecutive years of record-breaking heat, and ice is melting at an unprecedented rate at the poles, risking massive sea level rise in the decades ahead, some marchers say it is more important than ever for scientists to communicate and work toward solutions to curb fossil fuel emissions. |

French expatriates vote ahead of knife-edge election Posted: 22 Apr 2017 04:53 PM PDT A day before France votes for a new president, expatriates and residents in overseas territories in the Western Hemisphere cast their ballots Saturday, with some hoping to stop a global wave of right-wing nationalism from claiming their country. Hundreds of thousands of French nationals are eligible to vote in the United States, Canada and Latin America in one of the most unpredictable elections in decades, seen as crucial for the future of a deeply divided country and the European Union. Voting also began Saturday in many of France's overseas territories, such as the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the Caribbean. |

Even Trump's Earth Day message was anti-science Posted: 22 Apr 2017 12:06 PM PDT President Donald Trump just released a statement for Earth Day, and it doesn't seem like he really loves the Earth? Along with some faint praise of America's "abundant natural resources and awe-inspiring beauty," Trump used Earth Day to talk about jobs. "Economic growth enhances environmental protection. We can and must protect our environment without harming America's working families. That is why my administration is reducing unnecessary burdens on American workers and American companies, while being mindful that our actions must also protect the environment," Trump said. Are those vague allusions to the Trump administration's move to revive the Keystone pipeline? Or to slash federal funding for scientific research? Or gut the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) greenhouse gas emissions rules? .@realDonaldTrump Earth Day msg is unusual, defends policies aimed at economic growth, says science depends on "robust debate." pic.twitter.com/XI6ovznOAs — Andrew Freedman (@afreedma) April 22, 2017 The White House statement didn't mention climate change, national parks, the EPA or anything else scientific that's been threatened or ignored by the Trump administration. Nor did it mention the many thousands of people who participated in the March for Science in Washington, D.C. and around the world on Saturday, many in direct response to the Trump administration's anti-science stances. In fact, the statement also included a line frequently used by those who deny the overwhelming evidence showing that human emissions of greenhouse gases cause global warming. "My Administration is committed to advancing scientific research that leads to a better understanding of our environment and of environmental risks," Trump said. "As we do so, we should remember that rigorous science depends not on ideology, but on a spirit of honest inquiry and robust debate," Trump said. He followed up with this tweet later in the day. I am committed to keeping our air and water clean but always remember that economic growth enhances environmental protection. Jobs matter! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) April 22, 2017 Lost on the president are two actual mainstays of science, which are research and observation. To Trump and those in his administration, climate science and other extremely well-researched topics are counted as ideologies, and put up for debate. "This April 22nd, as we observe Earth Day, I hope that our Nation can come together to give thanks for the land we all love and call home," Trump said. Wouldn't that be great? Morocco summons Algeria envoy over Syrian refugees Posted: 23 Apr 2017 02:26 AM PDT Morocco has summoned Algeria's ambassador to express concern after 54 Syrians attempted to "illegally enter" the country from Algeria, the ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement on Sunday. It said 54 Syrians attempted to enter Morocco through the border town of Figuig, an area surrounded by mountains, between April 17 and 19. It accused Algeria of forcing them to cross into Morocco. |
NASA’s Cassini spacecraft just caught a glimpse of Earth, all the way from Saturn Posted: 22 Apr 2017 12:00 PM PDT NASA and its spectacular space hardware often spend so much time checking out our planetary neighbors that we forget Earth offers some pretty cool photo ops as well. A brand new photo released by NASA is a great reminder of that, and it was shot all the way from Saturn, courtesy of the always reliable Cassini spacecraft just before it's scheduled to begin the most harrowing part of its entire years-long mission. The photo, which shows the Earth as a tiny bright dot in a black sea of space, was shot at a distance of 870 million miles. If you zoom in on the original photo you can even make out the Moon as a smaller dot to the left of our planet. The most spectacular part of the image is the fact that it was shot from between Saturn's rings, with the bold A ring seen above the Earth and bright F ring creeping into the original photo at the bottom. It's a great shot, but it's also somewhat bittersweet when you consider Cassini's immediate future. The craft is scheduled to begin its "Grand Finale" dives shortly, in which it will fly recklessly through Saturn's rings a total of 22 times until, on its final approach, it flies directly into the planet itself. That final act will destroy the spacecraft, which has already achieved far more than scientists could have ever hoped when it was launched way back in 1997. That last fateful dive is slated for September 15th, 2017. |
Death toll jumps to 20 in Venezuela protests Posted: 21 Apr 2017 08:51 PM PDT The death toll in three weeks of violence at anti-government protests in Venezuela jumped to 20 people after a night of clashes and pillaging left 12 people dead in Caracas. Riot police and pro-government vigilantes fought running battles with protesters demanding the ouster of President Nicolas Maduro on the capital's east, west and south sides, witnesses said. "It was like a war," said 33-year-old construction worker Carlos Yanez, a resident of the southwestern district of El Valle. |

The child was picked up by local police in the mining city of Broken Hill, around a 14-hour drive from his starting point in the village of Kendall in the east of Australia. "Checks revealed the driver to be a 12-year-old boy (who) was travelling from Kendall NSW on his way to Perth," it said, adding that the boy had been arrested. |

The Scandals of Donald Trump: Presidential Edition Posted: 23 Apr 2017 03:00 AM PDT Donald Trump entered the White House as one of the most scandal-tarred presidents in American history—what his imbroglios may have lacked in depth, they made up in variety, encompassing legal, ethical, and sexual controversies. (In a twist, one of Trump's few competitors for the crown was his rival, Hillary Clinton.) They ranged from race discrimination to mafia connections, from petty hypocrisies to multimillion-dollar alleged frauds. |
U.S. defense secretary arrives in Djibouti to visit key military base Posted: 23 Apr 2017 05:09 AM PDT By Idrees Ali DJIBOUTI (Reuters) - U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis arrived in Djibouti on Sunday to visit an important military base at the southern entrance to the Red Sea used as a launch pad for operations in Yemen and Somalia. The visit, part of Mattis' week-long trip to the Middle East and Africa, comes as the United States has been increasing pressure on militant groups such as al Shabaab in the region. The U.S. base, which has about 4,000 personnel, is located just miles from a Chinese one, still under construction, which has caused concern to some U.S. officials. |

Awe-inspiring photos of Earth remind us just what's at stake Posted: 23 Apr 2017 12:51 PM PDT Millions of people came out this Earth Day to clean up and care for the planet. But space agencies and companies took a different approach, choosing to celebrate our Earth from up above. SpaceX on Saturday shared a breathtaking image captured during the recent launch of its SES-10 communications satellite. Elon Musk's private spaceflight company made history in late March when it reused a previously flown Falcon 9 booster to launch the satellite over Central and South America. US counting on French anti-terror ops in Africa: Mattis Posted: 23 Apr 2017 01:20 PM PDT US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis on Sunday urged France to continue its African anti-terror operations under its new presidency, as he visited strategic Djibouti on the day of France's first-round election. "I have no doubt that the French will continue to make their own decisions in their own best interest and that the terrorists will not enjoy these decisions," Mattis told reporters in the Horn of Africa nation, which hosts Washington's only permanent military base on the continent. The US backs France's Operation Barkhane, under which its military is fighting Islamists in five countries across the Sahel region -- Mauritania, Mali, Chad, Niger and Burkina Faso -- alongside African allies. |

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the USS Carl Vinson carrier strike group to sail to waters off the Korean peninsula in response to rising tension over the North's nuclear and missile tests, and its threats to attack the United States and its Asian allies. |

The head of Sergeant Anni Siraji of the Army's 32nd Infantry Battalion was found 50 meters away from his body in Patikul town in Sulu, Brigadier General Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Joint Task Force Sulu, said. Sobejana said Siraji was probably abducted and executed because of his involvement in peace initiatives in Sulu. |
The AirPods accessory we’ve all been waiting for is finally here Posted: 22 Apr 2017 07:30 AM PDT Apple's AirPods are clearly a success for the company. Manufacturing issues aside, it's been four months since they were released and Apple still can't produce enough supply to meet demand. All the people out there who have managed to score a paid of Apple's truly wireless earbuds seem to love them for the most part, which isn't much of a surprise. They design is smart and unique, and the sound quality is impressive. There are a few complaints that many users share though, and the biggest one is probably the fact that the smooth plastic buds don't stay in your ears when you work out. Now, however, the perfect solution has finally arrived. The Spigen TEKA RA200 AirPods Earhooks aren't the first silicone covers for Apple's AriPods, but they have a design feature that I've been waiting for ever since I first got my AirPods: They don't cover the sensors on the AirPods, so you won't eliminate ear detection when you use them. Here are a few more highlights from the product page:
