The 44th president did not make any remarks at the ceremony, held at St. Paul's Cathedral in Pittsburgh's Oakland neighborhood. After Rooney died Thursday, Obama released a statement lauding the "championship-caliber good man." Rooney served as the U.S. ambassador to Ireland during the Obama years. |
Thousands of Massachusetts drug cases to be dismissed after lab scandal Posted: 18 Apr 2017 02:29 PM PDT By Scott Malone BOSTON (Reuters) - Close to 20,000 Massachusetts criminal drug cases are set to be dismissed because of a scandal involving a former state chemist who admitted faking tests, civil liberties activists and prosecutors said on Tuesday. It will mean the largest number of drug cases tossed out in U.S. history due to one person, according to the American Civil Liberties Union. Rogue chemist Annie Dookhan pleaded guilty in 2013 to tampering with evidence during her nine years working at a state crime lab in Boston. |

Pence reassures Japan of U.S. resolve on North Korea, to work with China Posted: 18 Apr 2017 04:33 AM PDT By Roberta Rampton TOKYO (Reuters) - U.S. Vice President Mike Pence reassured Japan of American commitment to reining in North Korea's nuclear and missile ambitions on Tuesday, after warning that U.S. strikes in Syria and Afghanistan showed the strength of its resolve. Pence arrived in Tokyo from South Korea, where he assured leaders of an "iron-clad" alliance with the United States in the face of the reclusive North, which has conducted a series of missile and nuclear tests in defiance of U.N. sanctions. "The era of strategic patience is over and while all options are on the table, President (Donald) Trump is determined to work closely with Japan, with South Korea, with all our allies in the region and with China to achieve a peaceable resolution and the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula," Pence said in Tokyo before lunch with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. |

US Supreme Court rejects Arkansas request to allow execution Posted: 17 Apr 2017 11:54 PM PDT The US Supreme Court on Monday denied a last-minute request from Arkansas state authorities for permission to carry out its first execution in more than a decade. The US high court decision is the latest in a flurry of legal setbacks to the southeastern state's original plan to carry out eight executions between April 17 and 27, an unprecedented pace. Justices declined an appeal from the state's attorney general to lift a stay barring the execution of Don Davis, who was slated to be the first of several inmates to die this month. |

Venezuelan protests against government leave two students dead Posted: 19 Apr 2017 04:55 PM PDT By Eyanir Chinea and Anggy Polanco CARACAS/SAN CRISTOBAL, Venezuela (Reuters) - Two Venezuelan students died on Wednesday after being shot during protests against unpopular leftist President Nicolas Maduro, increasing turmoil in the volatile nation amid a devastating economic crisis. Opposition supporters protested in Caracas and other cities in what they called "the mother of all marches," denouncing Maduro for eroding democracy and plunging the oil-rich economy into chaos. Maduro says that beneath a peaceful facade, the protests are little more than opposition efforts to foment a coup to end socialism in Venezuela. |

Medical guidelines may mean millions miss out on life-saving drugs Posted: 18 Apr 2017 12:37 PM PDT By Andrew M. Seaman (Reuters Health) - More than nine million people may miss out on cholesterol-lowering drugs that prevent heart attacks and strokes if doctors choose one set of medical guidelines over another, according to a new study. "I would say we're still searching for the perfect guidelines," said lead author Michael Pencina, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. The 2013 ACC/AHA guidelines recommend statins for people ages 40 to 75 with at least a 7.5 percent risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next 10 years. |

Audi officially unveils cutting edge E-Tron Sportback EV with 311 miles of range Posted: 18 Apr 2017 09:31 AM PDT Following in the footsteps of Tesla and other automakers who are increasingly embracing the EV revolution, Audi today officially unveiled its E-tron Sportback at the Shanghai motor show. That Audi is eyeing the EV space intently shouldn't come as much of a surprise. Just last year, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler reportedly gave engineers the green-light to develop a car capable of giving Tesla a run for its money.
Now the Audi E-tron Sportback is just a concept for now, but company spokespeople say the car will likely make its way into production sometime in 2019. Not surprisingly, the E-tron Sportback features some compelling specs that aren't too far off from some of the rumors we heard a little less than a year ago. Featuring a 95 kWh battery pack, the Sportback has a 0-60 MPH time in the 4.5 second range and clearly isn't anywhere close to being as fast as a Tesla Model S. Still, the Sportback shines in other ways. Impressively, Audi's EV boasts a range of 311 miles which is more or less on par with Tesla's flagship Model S P100D. As for other details, the car boats a touchscreen display in the central console and some interesting lighting innovations.
Motor1 adds that the E-tron Sportback has upwards of 250 LEDs to the left and right of the grille which can "form different lighting patterns as a way to communicate with the other cars on the road." Some additional promo shots of the car can be seen below. An exterior shot of the car can be seen below. |

Rising seas could push some U.S. migration to areas far from coast: study Posted: 18 Apr 2017 06:24 PM PDT By Tom James SEATTLE (Reuters) - Rising sea levels caused by climate change may drive U.S. coastal residents to areas far from the seaboard, not just to adjacent inland regions, according to a study published online in the journal Nature Climate Change. "We typically think about sea-level rise as being a coastal challenge or a coastal issue," Mathew Hauer, author of the study and head of the Applied Demography program at the University of Georgia, said in an interview on Tuesday. |
Alabama's new governor orders speedier election to fill Senate seat Posted: 18 Apr 2017 03:14 PM PDT Alabama Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday moved up to December the election to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by Jeff Sessions after he was named attorney general, saying that the original plan to hold the election in late 2018 was not soon enough to meet state law. Ivey last week replaced fellow Republican Robert Bentley as governor after he resigned amid impeachment proceedings in the legislature. Bentley had appointed Republican Luther Strange in February to fill the seat Sessions held before joining President Donald Trump's cabinet. |

The Saudi Black Hawk "fell during operations in the province of Marib" east of Sanaa, the coalition said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency, without clarifying the reason. Coalition spokesman General Ahmed Assiri told AFP it was "too early" to comment on the causes of the crash, which is one of the deadliest incidents involving coalition forces in Yemen. |
