Michael Reagan, son of late President Ronald Reagan, defended disgraced Fox News host Bill O'Reilly, who was ousted this week after advertisers boycotted the show en masse amid a sexual harassment scandal. The firestorm started after the New York Times revealed that O'Reilly and the network had shelled out $13 million in settlements to various women who had accused him of sexual harassment. |

North Korea's show of force Posted: 21 Apr 2017 07:32 AM PDT (Reuters) - North Korea's latest display of its military hardware at a parade last week focused more on new missiles and less on tanks and artillery, suggesting it was trying to project the image of a country with advanced capabilities in warfare. The Reuters graphics team has analyzed the weapons shown during the five major parades staged in North Korea under its current leader Kim Jong Un, who took power in 2011 after the death of his father. Here is a link to the interactive graphic (http://tmsnrt.rs/2ox2IgH) The analysis shows there has been a gradual decline in tanks and artillery pieces on display since 2012, Kim Jong Un's first parade as leader, and a move to more long-range missiles. |

Attend the March for Science without ever leaving your couch Posted: 22 Apr 2017 06:00 AM PDT On Saturday, tens of thousands of scientists and fans of reason will take to the streets in more than 500 demonstrations planned around the world as part of the first-ever March for Science. But even if you can't make it to a march in person, a livestream of the festivities in Washington, D.C., has you covered. SEE ALSO: Here's why thousands of scientists are (and aren't) marching on Saturday A webcast set to go live at 10 a.m. ET Saturday will broadcast the rally ahead of the march in Washington, D.C., for any and all who want to participate but had to stay home for one reason or another. You can watch the webcast — which will feature rally speeches and entertainment by Questlove, Bill Nye, members of Congress and many others — provided through the Earth Day Network, in the window below. At the moment, science in this country is seemingly under threat from the Trump administration itself. If President Donald Trump has his way, as outlined in his budget blueprint, the Environmental Protection Agency's budget would be cut by more than 31 percent and many other science funding agencies would face massive cutbacks as well. The March for Science is designed to make the voices of scientists and science supporters known to policymakers around the world. "Science is a vital feature of a working democracy, spurring innovation, critical thinking, increased understanding, and better, healthier lives for all people," the March for Science states on its website. "By marching in Washington, DC and around the world, we take one of many steps to become more active in our communities and in democratic life." Iran election campaign kicks off without Ahmadinejad Posted: 20 Apr 2017 05:43 PM PDT Campaigning began on Friday for Iran's presidential election with incumbent Hassan Rouhani facing a tough battle against hardliners, though not from former president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad who was barred from standing. Ahmadinejad's disqualification by the conservative-run Guardian Council was no surprise -- he had been advised not to run by supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who said it would "polarise" the nation. "Once the supreme leader had told him not to stand, it became impossible for him to be cleared by the Guardian Council," said Clement Therme, research fellow for Iran at the International Institute for Strategic Studies. |

Philippines' Duterte tours Russian warship Posted: 21 Apr 2017 06:33 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte toured a visiting Russian warship on Friday for the second time in barely four months as he highlighted his growing closeness to Moscow. "The Russians are with me, I shall not be afraid," Duterte was quoted as saying during a visit to the Russian guided missile cruiser 'Varyag' which is on a port visit to Manila. Duterte toured the ship, posing for pictures with Russian sailors and in front of the vessel's huge missile-launchers, on what was the fourth ever port call by a Russian naval ship to the Philippines. |
The best plans for your new Galaxy S8 Posted: 21 Apr 2017 12:04 PM PDT The most wonderful of the time of the year, as it happens, is this morning. Not only is it Friday, but it's also launch day for the Samsung Galaxy S8. Right now, you can go wander into a store and come out with a phone with zero bezel, a curved display, and an iris reader. Even better, the battery won't explode. But a phone isn't much good without a mobile data plan, so to celebrate this momentous day, we've put together a comparison of the best plans you can get on each network for a Galaxy S8.
Best unlimited plansAll four major wireless carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint) have plans that are generously called "Unlimited." What you really get isn't unlimited data; instead, you get unrestricted data up to a cap (over 20GB for all the plans), and then over that cap, you'll still get a connection but you may be throttled. There are also restrictions on using your cellphone as a wireless hotspot and streaming HD video, depending on the plan. Verizon and T-Mobile currently have the two best plans worth talking about. You can see our full breakdown of the different plans here, but based on a couple metrics and your particular needs, Verizon or T-Mobile are the carriers to go with. Verizon has the best coverage across the entire US, and its low-band network works better indoors or in rural areas. However, T-Mobile has a more dense network with the same average speeds as Verizon. And, ever since February, when Verizon started offering unlimited data plans, Verizon's network has started to become more congested. According to data from Speedtest.net, average connection speed for Verizon users has dropped slightly since the introduction of unlimited plans. Verizon's plan is better for heavy data users, both because of the quality of the network, and the fact that you get 10GB of hotspot data and free HD videos included in the price. T-Mobile's basic unlimited One plan doesn't allow tethering at 4G speeds or streaming HD video, but you can get both of those for a $5 per month add-on. The price for a single line is slightly in T-Mobile's favor. One unlimited line is $70 per month including taxes and fees, while Verizon's price is around $90 including taxes and fees. Best prepaid planIn addition to the four major networks you're familiar with, there are also a host of mobile virtual network operators (MVNO), which use one of the big carrier's networks to serve their own customers. They tend to be aimed at people on cheaper cellphone plans, and can provide good value for money if you don't need unlimited data. MintSIM is one of the best: it offers huge discounts by selling service for 3 months, 6 months or a year upfront. The idea is that you pay $199 for 12 months of unlimited talk, text, and 2GB of data a month. That works out to just $16.58 a month, which is a crazy saving on a regular data plan. It uses T-Mobile's network, so you should get the same coverage you do with Big Magenta. Republic Wireless is another beloved MVNO. Its best plan is $20 per month for talk, text and 1GB of data on Sprint or T-Mobile. |
U.S. identifies, charges Israeli teen accused of Jewish threats Posted: 21 Apr 2017 04:25 PM PDT Michael Ron David Kadar, 18, who has dual citizenship and lives in Israel, made at least 245 threatening telephone calls between Jan. 4 and March 7, many targeting Jewish community centers in the United States, according to the Florida complaint. Kadar also appears linked to more than 240 hoax threats called into schools in the United States and Canada between August and December 2015, forcing thousands of students to be evacuated, according to the Georgia complaint. |
Scientists find footprint of unknown ancient reptile in Spain Posted: 20 Apr 2017 09:39 PM PDT Scientists have discovered a fossilised footprint from about 247 to 248 million years ago in the Pyrenees mountains in Spain which they believe was made by a previously unknown species of reptile. The footprint was found among a series of tracks made by the ancestors of crocodiles and dinosaurs, a group known as archosauromorphs, the researchers from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Catalan Institute of Palaeontology said in a statement. The researchers said the footprints suggest the tracks which they found in the Pyrenees mountains in northeastern spain on the border with France were made by animals that used all four limbs to walk and often also left marks with their tails. |

Police seek possible accomplices of Paris gunman Posted: 21 Apr 2017 10:23 AM PDT By Emmanuel Jarry and John Irish PARIS (Reuters) - Investigators are trying to find out whether the man who shot dead a policeman in Paris had accomplices, a prosecutor said, adding that he had shown no previous signs of radicalization despite a long prison record. The gunman, identified as Karim Cheurfi, opened fire on a police vehicle parked on the Champs Elysees in Paris late on Thursday, killing one officer and injuring two others before being shot dead. The attack, which was claimed by Islamic State, overshadowed the last day of campaigning for Sunday's presidential election first round. |
Former Tennessee teacher in kidnapping case captured, girl safe Posted: 20 Apr 2017 06:34 PM PDT A former high school teacher and a 15-year-old student he is accused of abducting last month in Tennessee were traced to a cabin in northern California, where police on Thursday arrested him and took the girl into protective custody, authorities said. Tad Cummins, 50, who vanished in mid-March with Elizabeth Thomas, was apprehended on a fugitive warrant charging him with aggravated kidnapping and unlawful sexual contact with a minor, law enforcement officials said. The girl walked out behind him and was later turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for additional questioning and a forensic exam, authorities said. |
The Latest Clue Apple is Making AR Glasses Posted: 21 Apr 2017 07:50 AM PDT There's a big new clue that Apple may be working on its own augmented reality glasses, and it's come from the most unlikely of places: a workplace incident report. The leaked report, which was obtained by Gizmodo, makes note of over 70 incidents at Apple's campuses. Several of these reports deal with eye strain issues, which gives a bit more weight to the possibility of an Apple AR headset. |
