Judge in U.S. WikiLeaks case declines to dismiss charge of aiding enemy Posted: 18 Jul 2013 04:58 PM PDT By Medina Roshan FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The military judge hearing the court-martial of the U.S. soldier accused of the biggest leak of classified material in the nation's history refused on Thursday to dismiss the most severe charge the defendant faces, aiding the enemy. That is one of 21 counts that U.S. Army Private First Class Bradley Manning is charged with, but it carries the possibility of life in prison. "He was knowingly providing intelligence to the enemy," said Judge Colonel Denise Lind in rejecting a motion by Manning's lawyer to dismiss that charge. ... |
ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTER PLAYS LEADING ROLE IN REVOLUTIONS Posted: 18 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT WASHINGTON -- Ever since the slaughter in Syria began two years ago, the most accepted explanation for the heinous cruelty there has been that this was a fight between historically warring ethnic groups. The French protectorate that became Syria early in the 20th century had the added incentive to hatred in that the ruling al-Assad family dictatorship came from the mountaintop Alawites, a tribe always tiny and bitterly persecuted. But now, some acute analysts are examining the awful fighting that goes on and on with a depth that should give us pause to reconsider the conventional wisdom. ... |

One of the last things the boy says he saw in his hometown was the uncle falling, shot, as the van full of strangers took him away on a treacherous, 3-day journey to neighboring Lebanon. |

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 08:17 AM PDT It certainly sounded like the old Samantha Power. At her confirmation hearing Wednesday, President Obama's nominee to be ambassador to the United Nations called the U.N.'s failure to act in Syria "a disgrace that history will judge harshly." But Power knows as well as anyone, having written the definitive book on the subject, that the U.N. acts effectively only when the United States leads. And the United States has not done so under the leader she serves, especially on Syria. ... |

Not Listening: What Republicans Could Learn From George W. Bush Posted: 18 Jul 2013 12:00 AM PDT During most of the Obama presidency, George W. Bush has maintained a decorous silence. Keeping quiet may not always have been easy for Bush, watching his successor repudiate and unwind his legacy, from Iraq to Afghanistan and beyond, but his discretion was wise under the circumstances. Suddenly, however, he is speaking out to urge a "positive resolution" to the debate over immigration reform — and the time to listen to him has surely arrived. |
