Defense rests in court-martial of soldier accused of WikiLeaks disclosures Posted: 10 Jul 2013 03:23 PM PDT By Ian Simpson FORT MEADE, Maryland (Reuters) - The soldier accused of the biggest leak of classified material in U.S. history chose not to testify at his court-martial on Wednesday, when the defense rested its case. U.S. Army Private First Class Bradley Manning, 25, is charged with disclosing more than 700,000 classified files, combat videos and State Department cables to the pro-transparency website WikiLeaks. Manning, who served as an intelligence analyst in Iraq in 2009 and 2010, could face life in prison without parole if convicted of the most serious of 21 charges, aiding the enemy. ... |
Bradley Manning trial defense: He did not harm US national security Posted: 10 Jul 2013 01:54 PM PDT The essence of Pfc. Bradley Manning's defense in his military court martial is that, yes, he released a trove of classified data to the controversial whistle-blower organization WikiLeaks, but that information did not seriously harm US national security – and it certainly did not aid the enemy in the war on terrorism. |

Gun Nut Celebrity Adam Kokesh Busted for Shrooms Posted: 10 Jul 2013 11:49 AM PDT Adam Kokesh, a prominent libertarian gun rights activist who recently envisioned an "Open Carry March" into Washington — that is, thousands of protestors marching into the district wielding loaded rifles — has been taken into custody on drug charges after cops found hallucinogenic mushrooms in his home, The Washington Post reports. (Kokesh is pictured above being arrested for putting up anti-war posters in 2006.) Shockingly, he also had a gun, which could add two years of prison time to his sentence. |
Zero US troops in Afghanistan: real possibility or negotiating tactic? Posted: 10 Jul 2013 10:52 AM PDT The United States has two main objectives in Afghanistan after the US-led NATO mission ends in December 2014: to prevent Al Qaeda and other terrorist elements from regaining a toehold there from which to operate, and to continue training and building Afghan forces so they can maintain the country's security and stability. |
Washington vilified on both sides of Egypt's divide Posted: 10 Jul 2013 10:44 AM PDT By Maggie Fick and Tom Finn CAIRO (Reuters) - Pictures of Barack Obama have popped up all over Cairo. Some have his faced crossed out in paint. Heavy black beards are daubed onto others. No matter which side you talk to in Egypt, where people have been polarized by a violent political crisis, the U.S. president is cast as the villain. Islamists who support Mohamed Mursi, Egypt's first freely elected president, who was overthrown by the military a week ago, are angry at the United States because they believe it allowed, and even plotted, what they call a military coup. ... |
Fox Is Not Your Friend, Elisabeth Hasselbeck Posted: 10 Jul 2013 10:43 AM PDT When word came last night that Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Survivor contestant turned conservative lightning rod on The View, will be leaving that frequently nightmarish chat show this week to start a gig at Fox's Fox & Friends, it initially seemed perfect. Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Sarah Palin booster and spouter of various Karl Rove-approved talking points, should be a natural fit for Fox News, a network that gives its many loyal viewers exactly what they want exactly how they want it. ... |

Harvard prof says leaks changed WikiLeaks' image Posted: 10 Jul 2013 09:16 AM PDT FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) — An Army private's leak of classified information to WikiLeaks changed how the public, the government and traditional news media perceived the anti-secrecy organization — from a legitimate journalistic enterprise to a group that supported terrorism, a Harvard law professor testified Wednesday. |

Kurdish rebels promote hawk as peace process falters Posted: 10 Jul 2013 08:04 AM PDT By Daren Butler ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Kurdish rebels have named a veteran senior militant as co-head of their political wing, replacing a relative moderate and clouding the future of a peace process with the Turkish state that has been disrupted by renewed violence. White House lobbies Congress to overcome Syria arms deadlock Posted: 09 Jul 2013 05:55 PM PDT By Mark Hosenball and Susan Cornwell WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry are lobbying members of Congress to try to break an impasse over White House plans to send arms to Syrian rebels, U.S. officials said on Tuesday. Both Republican and Democratic lawmakers fear the weapons will end up in the hands of Islamist militants, and will not be enough to tip the balance against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad anyway. ... |
