Anti-Assad rebels say U.S. arms needed, vow to control distribution Posted: 11 Jul 2013 05:12 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Syria's opposition said on Thursday that it was concerned U.S. lawmakers had succeeded in holding up U.S. weapons deliveries to rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and repeated assurances the arms will not go to Islamist militants. Members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives intelligence committees have expressed reservations over the Obama administration's intentions to support the insurgents by sending them military hardware, fearing the weapons would fall into the wrong hands. ... |

OUR WARS IN THE NEAR EAST ARE FUTILE EXERCISES IN WASTE Posted: 11 Jul 2013 02:30 PM PDT WASHINGTON -- In the confused 12 years since we invaded Afghanistan, our military's description of our fighting style has ranged from counterinsurgency to counterterrorism, to ending with the favored "war on terrorism."We leveled villages, killed innocent families, and struck a number of al-Qaida and Taliban with drones -- and just as many non-al-Qaida and non-Taliban. But it was all OK, because it was in the name of wiping out terrorism. ... |
Correction: Mideast-Ramadan story Posted: 11 Jul 2013 01:56 PM PDT DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — In a story July 10 about Ramadan, The Associated Press, relying on a press release issued by the U.N.'s Department of Public Information, News and Media Division, reported erroneously that the World Food Program said it needed $27 million every month to deal with the growing ranks of Syrians made hungry because of the war and refugees crisis abroad. The World Food Program needed $27 million every week. The U.N. has corrected the error. |

But we do not believe that that's the likely outcome of these negotiations," James Dobbins, the State Department's special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, told a Senate hearing. ... |
What Happens Next on Immigration? Posted: 11 Jul 2013 07:27 AM PDT People who want more immigration as well as people who want less immigration all claim to support "reform." The urgency with which Republicans felt they needed to appeal to Latinos after the 2012 election has faded, and now it seems good enough to just sound pro-reform. Take, for example, a possible compromise The Washington Post's Ezra Klein reports. The Senate bill has a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants, but many in the House oppose that. ... |

No quick fix in sight for Egypt's energy chaos Posted: 11 Jul 2013 07:12 AM PDT By Julia Payne and Oleg Vukmanovic LONDON (Reuters) - None of the new ministers to be appointed by Egypt's military-backed leaders faces an easy task, but perhaps special sympathy should be reserved for the brave soul who takes on the energy ministry. Long lines at fuel stations and power cuts were among the main grievances of protesters who prompted the army to overthrow the elected president last week. The lines have since shortened a little but are still there, and few will easily give up on the 1.85 Egyptian pounds ($0. ... |
