Senator Warren launches 2020 campaign, sounds note of economic equality Posted: 09 Feb 2019 05:51 PM PST The Massachusetts Democrat, a leader of the party's progressive wing, made her announcement from a historic site in Lawrence - a city northwest of Boston that was once the hub of textile mills and which launched the U.S. organized labor movement. The fight to build an America where dreams are possible, an America that works for everyone," Warren said. "And that is why I stand here today: to declare that I am a candidate for president of the United States of America." Warren is part of an increasingly crowded and diverse field of Democrats vying for the chance to challenge President Donald Trump, the likely Republican nominee. |

Conjoined twins die in Yemen due to lack of medical equipment Posted: 10 Feb 2019 06:24 AM PST Conjoined twin boys born under blockade in Yemen nearly three weeks ago died on Saturday after attempts to secure a potentially life-saving evacuation failed. In a statement carried by the Houthi-run Saba news, the health ministry said the twins' deaths reflected the humanitarian situation Yemen's children are facing as a result of the war. The boys' plight and the flurry of international media it generated has cast the politics of Yemen's war and their human cost into stark relief. Abdelkhaleq and Abdelkarim were born in Houthi-controlled Sanaa, at a hospital so woefully underequipped after years of bombardment and blockade by the Saudi-led coalition that doctors could perform an MRI. The twins' doctors had begged for them to be evacuated to a hospital equipped to give them life-saving treatment. "They need to travel immediately. They will not be able to survive in Yemen under the social, political and economic circumstances in this country," said Dr Faisal al-Balbali, the head of the neonatal unit at al-Thawra hospital in Sanaa. But Yemen's airspace is controlled by the Saudi-led coalition and, following Houthi missile attacks on Saudi Arabia, no civilian flights have taken off from Sanaa since 2015. The only flights permitted in and out are those operated by the United Nations. Despite offers from a Saudi organisation, the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works, to provide the needed medical care, no way around the blockade was found. Yemen's nearly four-year war has seen the country brought to the brink of starvation, its infrastructure destroyed, as Iran-backed Houthi rebels battle the Saudi-led coalition which aims to restore the government of Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, who was ousted by the Houthis in 2014. UN-led peace talks re-started in December 2018 and aim to implement a ceasefire and military withdrawal in Red Sea port city Hodeidah, and to reopen Sanaa airport. |
Toppled Malaysian leader's 1MDB trial delayed Posted: 11 Feb 2019 03:01 AM PST Former Malaysian premier Najib Razak's trial over a massive financial scandal that contributed to his government's downfall was postponed Monday, in a blow to slow-moving efforts to bring the disgraced politician to justice. Najib had been due to go on trial Tuesday for the first time over allegations linked to his involvement in the looting of Malaysian sovereign wealth fund 1MDB in a fraud that reverberated around the world. Billions of dollars were allegedly stolen by Najib and his cronies from 1MDB, which was set up to help develop Malaysia's economy, and spent on everything from high-end real estate to expensive artworks. |
PM May to Make Statement to Parliament on Tuesday: Brexit Update Posted: 11 Feb 2019 09:15 AM PST Jack Dromey, the Labour politician whose cross-party amendment with Conservative Caroline Spelman to block a no-deal Brexit was passed by the House of Commons last month, said he is waiting until after Theresa May speaks on Tuesday before deciding whether to propose a repeat. "Has she got the message?" Dromey said in an interview. |
US Muslim lawmaker's tweet sparks anti-Semitism charges Posted: 11 Feb 2019 10:19 AM PST Ilhan Omar, one of the first two Muslim women in the US Congress, drew stern rebukes from Republicans and fellow Democrats Monday after suggesting US support for Israel is fueled by money from the pro-Israel lobby AIPAC. "It's all about the Benjamins baby," Omar replied, referring to American $100 bills featuring the likeness of Benjamin Franklin. |

New government shutdown looms as negotiators fail to reach deal over Trump border wall funding Posted: 11 Feb 2019 05:39 AM PST A new US government shutdown looks increasingly likely as negotiations reached an impasse on whether to limit the number of undocumented immigrants that can be detained. The two sides also remain separated on how much spending to allocate for president Donald Trump's promised border wall. Mr Trump used the dispute to cast the Democrats as being soft on criminals. |
Zimbabwe teachers' unions suspend national strike Posted: 10 Feb 2019 10:36 AM PST Zimbabwean teachers have suspended a national strike seeking better pay, unions said on Sunday, but warned that they could walk out from their jobs again if the government did not meet their demands. Teachers went on strike on Feb. 5 after negotiations between the government and public-sector workers broke down, heightening political tension after last month's violent protests that were met by a security crackdown. Teachers' unions met Education Minister Paul Mavima in Harare and agreed to return to work on Monday. |

Blizzard blankets Seattle, more snow forecast Posted: 09 Feb 2019 05:59 PM PST Seattle residents woke on Saturday to the rare sight of their city covered in white as the National Weather Service kept winter storm warnings in effect for much of the region. Washington Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency on Friday as the first powerful winter storm approached, warning it could be unlike any Seattle had seen in many years. A record 6.4 inches (16 cm) of snow piled up at the Seattle-Tacoma International airport on Friday, the biggest accumulation since 2014, the National Weather Service said. |

Ralph Northam: Virginians split on calls for governor to resign after blackface scandal, poll finds Posted: 10 Feb 2019 05:27 AM PST Virginians are deadlocked over whether Governor Ralph Northam should step down after the emergence of a racist photo from the Democrat's 1984 medical school yearbook, according to a Washington Post-Schar School poll. Following the release of the image last week, which shows a man in blackface next to another in a Ku Klux Klan outfit, there have been demands for Mr Northam to resign. Mr Northam counts higher support among black residents – who say he should remain in office by a margin of 58 per cent to 37 per cent – than among whites, who are more evenly divided. |
Brexit referendum spurs British companies into investing in EU: research Posted: 10 Feb 2019 05:18 PM PST The 2016 Brexit vote spurred British companies into increasing investment in European Union countries sharply, likely at the expense of spending at home, an academic study showed on Monday. The referendum result led to a 12 percent increase in foreign direct investment transactions from Britain into the EU between mid-2016 and September 2018, researchers from the London School of Economics' Center for Economic Performance said. Although the authors could not be certain if this would have otherwise been spent in Britain, they cited business survey evidence and media reports that suggested spending often took place at the expense of British. |
Zimbabwe Teachers Call Off Strike, to Return to Work Monday Posted: 10 Feb 2019 10:14 AM PST The strike, which follows a stay away by state doctors and fuel price protests last month that left 12 dead, was marred by intimidation from military officials and politicians, the unions have previously said. "The employer is thus advised to take advantage of this detente to introspect and come up with a well thought out meaningful and long lasting solution on the salary grievances," the Zimbabwe Teachers Association and Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe said in a jont statement. |

U.S. lawmakers meet on border security, scrambling to avert shutdown Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:35 PM PST The talks, which had broken down over the weekend, restarted in the U.S. Capitol just hours before a scheduled rally in the Texas border city of El Paso, where President Donald Trump will promote his promised wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a proposal opposed by Democrats. In Washington, the lawmakers hope to reach an agreement on Monday to allow time for the legislation to pass the House of Representatives and Senate and get Trump's signature by Friday, when funding is due to expire for the Department of Homeland Security, the Justice Department and several other federal agencies. Trump, who in December said he would be "proud" to shut the federal government over border security, took a different tack on Monday. |

UK's May to promise new Brexit debate in push for more negotiating time Posted: 10 Feb 2019 03:34 AM PST May wants to win over lawmakers in her Conservative Party with changes relating to the Northern Irish border, but the EU has refused to reopen that part of the deal and instead wants May to pursue a compromise with the main opposition Labour Party by agreeing closer UK-EU ties. Housing minister James Brokenshire said on Sunday May would commit to giving parliament another debate on Brexit with the chance to vote on alternative options, if a deal had not yet been agreed and voted upon by then. "That gives that sense of timetable, clarity, and purpose on what we're doing with the EU - taking that work forward and our determination to get a deal - but equally knowing that role that parliament very firmly has," Brokenshire told the BBC. |

Thai election panel disqualifies princess as PM candidate Posted: 11 Feb 2019 02:40 AM PST The Election Commission released the official list of parties' candidates for prime minister without the name of Princess Ubolratana Rajakanya Sirivadhana Barnavadi, 67, the king's elder sister. The list excluded Ubolratana "because every member of the royal family comes within the application of the same rule requiring the monarch to be above politics and to be politically neutral," the panel said in a statement after a meeting. The princess had accepted the nomination of the Thai Raksa Chart party, a populist movement drawn from supporters of ousted ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra, who has been at the center of more than a decade of turmoil in Thai politics. |
