US boyfriend of 'Russian agent' Butina charged with fraud Posted: 06 Feb 2019 07:03 PM PST An American who was dating jailed alleged Russian agent Maria Butina was charged with fraud Tuesday, adding a new twist in the sprawling investigations into Moscow's meddling in US politics. Republican and National Rifle Association operative Paul Erickson was charged with one count of fraud for cheating investors in companies he controlled that purported to be running assisted living facilities and building homes in North Dakota. In all three cases, he took hundreds of thousands of dollars from investors and used some of it for his personal needs, the indictment said. |

Trump says to meet North Korea's Kim in Vietnam in late February Posted: 05 Feb 2019 11:33 PM PST Trump said in his annual State of the Union address to Congress much work remained to be done in the push for peace with North Korea, but cited the halt in its nuclear testing and no new missile launches in 15 months as proof of progress. "If I had not been elected president of the United States, we would right now, in my opinion, be in a major war with North Korea," Trump said. Trump had raised fears of war in 2017 when he threatened to rain "fire and fury like the world has never seen" on North Korea because of the threat its nuclear weapons and missiles posed to the United States. |
Tusk's Brexit ‘Hell’ Moment a Touch Provocative, Ireland Says Posted: 07 Feb 2019 07:57 AM PST U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday reiterated that the changes she's seeking to the so-called Irish backstop withdrawal agreement must be legally binding for U.K. lawmakers to approve a deal. The prime minister also said she told Tusk his comments were "unhelpful'' and had caused "dismay'' in the U.K. Tusk's comments captured the "frustration" on the EU side, Coveney said in a Bloomberg Television interview. |

Posted: 07 Feb 2019 12:58 PM PST Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was seen wiping tears from her face after using the death of a seven-year-old migrant child to demand an end to funding for the nation's border agency. At the event on Capitol Hill in Washington DC, the New York congresswoman said US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did "not deserve a dime", until it showed it cared about human rights. "Not only will we not agree to fund [ICE], but we are here to say that an agency like ICE, which repeatedly and systematically violates human rights, does not deserve a dime," she said. |
Twitter profit soars as user base shrinks Posted: 06 Feb 2019 04:40 PM PST Twitter said Thursday profits rose sharply in the fourth quarter, lifted by gains in advertising despite a drop in its global user base. Twitter said it would stop using the monthly user base metric and instead report "monetizable" daily active users in the US and worldwide. Using that measure, Twitter showed a base of 126 million worldwide, up nine percent over the year. |

Death toll rises to six at South Africa coal mine gas explosion Posted: 07 Feb 2019 07:04 AM PST The representative of the creditor protection team at the mine, Michael Elliot, said more than 20 people were still stuck underground at the mine in Middelburg and are presumed dead. Rescue efforts were hampered by dangerously high levels of toxic gas underground, Elliot said. The mine is owned by Tegeta Resources and Exploration, which is undergoing creditor protection after its owners, the Gupta brothers, found it difficult to continue doing business in South Africa following corruption allegations against them. |

The Law Will Be on Trump’s Side If He Declares an Emergency to Fund His Wall Posted: 07 Feb 2019 03:30 AM PST It seems increasingly likely that President Trump will declare a national emergency at our southern border in order to access funds to build a wall. Last week, I had the pleasure of debating National Review's very own David French on the legality of such a move in a Federalist Society-sponsored tele-conference. David and I agree that Congress has not placed any serious limits on the president's power to declare an emergency and that the Supreme Court was unlikely to second-guess him. |

Twitter hammered as user losses overshadow improving finances Posted: 07 Feb 2019 01:50 PM PST Twitter shares took a pounding Thursday as an unsettling update on its global user base offset upbeat figures on revenues and profits in the past quarter. Shares skidded 9.8 percent to close at $30.80 following Twitter's fourth quarter update, which showed a consistent profit trend despite a shrinking number of users. Chief executive Jack Dorsey said the results reflect Twitter's efforts at "promoting healthy conversation" by weeding out fraudulent accounts used for abuse, harassment and political influence campaigns. |

Work urgently with me on Brexit: Britain's May appeals to EU Posted: 06 Feb 2019 02:40 PM PST Just weeks after parliament resoundingly rejected her Brexit deal, May needs to persuade a reluctant EU to change the Withdrawal Agreement to help her get lawmakers' approval before Britain is due to leave the EU on March 29. If she cannot, Britain, and May, face an uncertain future, opening the door to several scenarios - leaving without a deal which some businesses say might cripple the economy, another referendum, an early election or never leaving the EU at all. |
Gucci's accessories make it the brand of the moment, according to Lyst Posted: 07 Feb 2019 04:01 AM PST The news coincides with the start of a big year for Gucci, which is set to launch its inaugural jewelry line this summer, and whose creative director Alessandro Michele will co-chair the MET Gala in May. The Lyst Index, which takes into account the behavior of the site's 5 million monthly online shoppers in addition to social media metrics, saw Gucci knock the streetwear label Off-White into second place. Heritage brand Balenciaga came in at number three, while Moncler jumped 12 places in the ranking to claim fourth position, thanks in part to the success of its new 'Genius' diffusion line. |

21 Savage confirms he was born in the UK as ICE immigration case continues Posted: 06 Feb 2019 12:48 AM PST 21 Savage has confirmed he was born in the UK after being arrested in Atlanta by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for being "unlawfully present in the US". The rapper, whose real name is She'yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, stated via representatives that he was born in Newham, London, and emigrated to the US when he was 7 years old. In 2005 he departed to vist the UK, and returned later that month. |
Monsanto versus farmer battle goes into 4th judicial round Posted: 05 Feb 2019 08:17 PM PST A 12-year-old judicial battle pitting a cereal farmer against Monsanto, the biotech giant, goes to a fourth round Wednesday before the French courts. Farmer Paul Francois won his initial case in 2012, and its appeal by Monsanto in 2015, after suing the US firm for poisoning him through inhalation of its Lasso weedkiller. Now, after a technical review by the final court of appeal, the case gets bounced back to appeal level after a ruling by the higher court that the case should be decided not so much on whether Monsanto provided adequate information about its product, but on whether its chemicals were dangerous, according to Francois Lafforgue, one of the farmer's lawyers. |

'El Chapo' jury deliberations to stretch into fourth day Posted: 06 Feb 2019 01:55 PM PST Guzman, 61, is accused of trafficking tons of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and methamphetamine into the United States as leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel. The 11-week trial in federal court in Brooklyn, in which more than 50 witnesses testified, offered the public an unprecedented look into the inner workings of the cartel, named for the state in northwestern Mexico where Guzman was born in a poor mountain village. The defense has argued Guzman was set up as a "fall guy" by Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a Sinaloan drug kingpin who remains at large. |

Liam Neeson denies racism after admitting hunt for black men Posted: 06 Feb 2019 09:26 AM PST Hollywood star Liam Neeson insisted on Tuesday he was "not racist" after confessing that he once set out to attack a random black man after a friend of his told him she had been raped. "I'm not a racist," Neeson said on ABC News, while admitting he had felt a "primal urge to lash out" about 40 years ago after hearing from his close friend that she had been attacked by a black man. "I went out deliberately into black areas in the city, looking to be set upon so that I could unleash physical violence," Neeson recalled. |

Nathan Sutherland, 36, wearing an orange jumpsuit and shackled at the wrists and legs, entered his plea during a brief arraignment at the Maricopa County Superior Court. Sutherland, a licensed practical nurse who began working at Hacienda HealthCare Skilled Nursing Facility in Phoenix in 2012, has been charged with one count each of sexual assault and abuse of a vulnerable adult. |

U.S. banks weigh whether to embrace or avoid progressive firebrand Ocasio-Cortez Posted: 06 Feb 2019 11:32 PM PST Barely a month into the new Congress, financial lobbyists in Washington are already strategizing how to handle the star power of rookie Democrat lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The Democratic Socialist and Wall Street critic joined the 60-member House Financial Services Committee in mid-January and more than a dozen lobbyists interviewed by Reuters say the 29-year-old activist and former bartender is too high-profile to ignore. Richard Hunt, chief executive of the Consumer Bankers Association, said he had not encountered a lawmaker like Ocasio-Cortez in more than 20 years in Washington. |
