Travel blogger who warned against dangerous selfies dies 'taking cliff edge photo' Posted: 30 Oct 2018 08:53 AM PDT A travel blogger who fell to her death alongside her husband while apparently taking selfies on a cliff edge had previously warned tourists against attempting to capture dangerous photographs. Rangers at Yosemite National Park in California found the bodies of Vishnu Viswanath and Meenakshi Moorthy around 800 feet below Taft Point, where visitors can gaze over an unguarded cliff face. Viswanath's brother, Jishnu Viswanath, told reporters on Tuesday the pair had set up a tripod close to the sheer ledge shortly before they apparently fell. |

India deploys huge security for inauguration of world's biggest statue Posted: 30 Oct 2018 11:50 AM PDT Thousands of police officers guarded the world's biggest statue ahead of its inauguration by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday, anticipating protests by angry locals displaced by the enormous figure. Indian authorities have planned a spectacular opening of the 182-metre (600-foot) tall tribute to Indian independence hero Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, with Air Force jets and helicopters to shower flowers on the statue during a flypast. |

Nature pushed to the brink by 'runaway consumption' Posted: 30 Oct 2018 03:35 AM PDT Unbridled consumption has decimated global wildlife, triggered a mass extinction and exhausted Earth's capacity to accommodate humanity's expanding appetites, the conservation group WWF warned Tuesday. From 1970 to 2014, 60 percent of all animals with a backbone -- fish, birds, amphibians, reptiles and mammals -- were wiped out by human activity, according to WWF's "Living Planet" report, based on an ongoing survey of more than 4,000 species spread over 16,700 populations scattered across the globe. "The situation is really bad, and it keeps getting worse," WWF International director general Marco Lambertini told AFP. |
Turkey demands truth over Khashoggi killing as Saudi prosecutor visits Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:00 AM PDT Khashoggi's death at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul nearly four weeks ago has escalated into a crisis for the world's top oil exporter, which initially denied any knowledge of or role in his death. Saudi public prosecutor Saud Al Mojeb arrived in Istanbul overnight, days after he contradicted weeks of Saudi statements by saying that Khashoggi's killing was premeditated. On Monday he met Istanbul's chief prosecutor. |
General Electric cuts dividend as it reports huge loss Posted: 30 Oct 2018 01:55 PM PDT General Electric slashed its stock dividend to just a penny on Tuesday amid continued losses, and disclosed that US authorities have broadened an investigation into the company's accounting. Chief Executive H. Lawrence Culp, who was tapped earlier this month to try to lead a recovery, also announced a plan to split up the troubled power division and signaled that a turnaround would take time. Investors have been hopeful that Culp, an outsider to GE as the former chief executive of the conglomerate Danaher, will change the company's fortunes and the share price initially rose in pre-market trading after the results were released. |

8 days until the midterm elections: Where things stand Posted: 28 Oct 2018 09:01 PM PDT Rep. Ted Budd, R-N.C., has one big advantage over his opponent, Democratic challenger Kathy Manning: The 13th District's map was intentionally drawn to privilege Republicans. Budd defended gerrymandering, saying that unless the Supreme Court says otherwise, "it is constitutional to politically gerrymander." Gerrymandering, which has helped Democrats in the past, is more likely to help Republicans this time because the GOP controlled the redistricting process in more states after the 2010 census. Two-term Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., is spending much of her reelection campaign's final stretch stumping in and around heavily Republican Webster County, which President Trump won by nearly 80 percent of the vote two years ago. |

Indonesia warns over 'fake news' after deadly jet crash Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:12 PM PDT Indonesia warned social media users on Tuesday against spreading hoaxes, as rescue teams searched for human remains from a horrifying jet crash. A string of false stories have been circulating online since the Lion Air plane plunged into the sea off Jakarta on Monday with 189 people on board. Please be wise," Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, tweeted. |

Some good news: Doughnut the 28-pound cat has a new home Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:30 AM PDT Move over Bruno: Another thicc cat's found his happy home. The enormous 28-pound cat's name is Doughnut, and the internet fell in love with him on Friday when the Jacksonville Humane Society posted photos of him on Facebook. OH LAWD HE COMIN! #chonk pic.twitter.com/ZeZc0iI9A3 — Jax Humane Society (@jaxhumane) October 26, 2018 According to the original post showing off all of Doughnut's curves, one requirement for his new home was "an owner who is willing to keep him on his strict diet." They acknowledged that while many of us might like a chunky cat, it's really not very healthy for Doughnut to be that overweight. "His new family will need to work with a vet to get him to the right weight at the right pace," the post stressed. But all is well, according to a recent Facebook update sharing that Doughnut is now in a happy home with a new owner. The Jacksonville Humane Society Facebook page said that pictures of the cat in his new home will be posted soon. Hopefully by the time we get new photos of Doughnut, he'll look a little slimmer. After all, a healthy cat is a happy cat. We all wish Doughnut the best of luck on his weight-loss journey. Wellies ahoy as New Zealand quake leaves Harry and Meghan unshaken Posted: 30 Oct 2018 12:39 AM PDT Prince Harry and wife Meghan competed at "welly wanging" and were gifted a toy kiwi Tuesday, but narrowly missed out on the ultimate New Zealand experience when a powerful earthquake rattled parts of the country they had left just the previous day. The "Shaky Isles" lived up to their name as the royal roadshow moved to Auckland from Wellington, where the national parliament was temporarily suspended when a deep 6.2-magnitude tremor hit the central North Island. Reporters travelling with Harry and Meghan said they did not feel the mid-afternoon quake and the royals proceeded as planned with a walkabout on the Auckland waterfront. |

Syrian Kurds boost fight against Islamic State in east after setback Posted: 29 Oct 2018 08:42 AM PDT BEIRUT/BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Syrian Kurdish special forces have joined an offensive against Islamic State militants in eastern Syria, a commander said, after the jihadists recovered ground from U.S.-backed forces in a fierce counter attack. Islamic State (IS) launched the assault against the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in the Deir al-Zor region near the Iraqi border on Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said around 70 SDF fighters were killed in the assault which Islamic State launched under cover of a sandstorm and drew on suicide bombers and female jihadists. |

Ideal timing between pregnancies is at least one year: study Posted: 29 Oct 2018 05:06 PM PDT Women who want to bear children in their 30s and 40s often face a dilemma regarding how much time to wait between pregnancies. Doctors often advise they wait 18 to 24 months. A study Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), based on 150,000 pregnancies in Canada from 2004 to 2014, concludes that waiting less than a year between pregnancies raises the risks, regardless of a woman's age. |
