Posted: 19 Oct 2018 07:47 AM PDT Jimmy Carter has branded newly-confirmed judge Brett Kavanaugh "unfit" to serve on the US supreme court. The former president told an audience at Emory University in Atlanta on Wednesday that Mr Kavanaugh's confirmation by congress earlier this month was a "very serious mistake". "I thought that whether or not he attempted to rape that woman, whether or not, I thought he was temperamentally unfit to serve on the Supreme Court because of his outburst during the hearing," Mr Carter was recorded by an audience member as saying. |

Man pleads guilty to kidnapping and raping British backpacker in Australia Posted: 18 Oct 2018 10:45 PM PDT A 23-year-old man has pleaded guilty to the rape and kidnapping of a British backpacker in Australia after holding her captive during a brutal 900-mile road trip across the outback. Appearing via video in a court in Cairns in north Queensland, Marcus Allyn Keith Martin pleaded guilty to three counts of rape and one count of deprivation of liberty following his horrific treatment of a 22-year-old British traveller spanning about two months in 2017. The woman was rescued after she appeared shaken and traumatised at a petrol station in south-west Queensland. She failed to pay possibly as part of a deliberate ploy which prompted the cashier to contact the police. Beverley Page, the owner of the petrol station, later said she immediately realised something was wrong. "She came in, she couldn't pay for her fuel," Ms Page said. "She was crying and shaking the whole time — she was really upset. There were two marks on her neck along with the black eyes." Map of British backpackers journey When police located Martin's four-wheel-drive near the outback town of Mitchell, a small rural town about 900 miles south of Cairns, they reportedly discovered Martin hiding in an alcove in the back. The pair reportedly met at a dance party outside Cairns before starting a relationship. The woman, who arrived in Australia on a working visa in April 2015, told police that Martin had begun abusing her shortly after they met. Detective Inspector Paul Hart said the backpacker showed remarkable courage and had no real opportunity to escape. "What she's experienced is no doubt horrific and terrifying," he said in 2017. A four-wheel drive vehicle is parked at the police station in Roma, Australia Credit: AP "She is a tourist, a lot of the areas where she would have been would have been unknown to her, and she wouldn't have known anyone there, so it would have been difficult for her to make an escape." Following Martin's guilty plea, prosecutors discontinued ten other charges including eight counts of rape, one of serious cruelty to animals, and torture. Martin earlier pleaded guilty to supplying dangerous drugs, wilful damage, assault occasioning bodily harm and choking or strangulation. He has been remanded in custody and will appear in court next February at a hearing to set his sentencing date. |

'At least 50' dead as train ploughs through festival crowd in India Posted: 19 Oct 2018 09:46 AM PDT At least 50 people were killed on Friday after a train ploughed into revellers celebrating a Hindu festival in northern India, police said, the latest major accident on the country's crumbling rail network. A crowd had gathered on railway tracks in the city of Amritsar in Punjab state to watch a fireworks show marking the Dussehra festival when the train barrelled down the line at speed. "There are more than 50 dead. The priority now is to take the injured to the hospital," Amritsar city police commissioner SS Srivastava told reporters. More than 60 people who were injured were being given emergency treatment at various hospitals across the city, he added. An AFP photographer at the scene said some victims had lost limbs in the accident while others suffered head wounds. An eyewitness told a local TV channel there was "utter commotion" when the crowds noticed the train "coming very fast" towards them. "Everyone was running helter-skelter and suddenly the train crashed into the crowds of people," he said. Indian relatives and revellers gather around the bodies of the victims of a train accident during the Hindu festival of Dussehra in Amritsar Credit: NARINDER NANU/AFP Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh ordered an investigation into the deadly accident and announced a monetary compensation of 500,000 rupees ($6800) each to the family of the victims. "We have reports that some 50-60 people have died. We have asked all hospitals to remain open through the night so that the injured can be treated," Singh told reporters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extremely saddened by the "heart-wrenching tragedy" and asked officials to provide immediate assistance to the injured. Some relatives of the deceased blamed the authorities for allowing a "big function" to be held next to the railway track. An eyewitness said people were taking pictures on their mobile phones and "they were not given any warning that they should not stand on the tracks." India's railway network is the world's fourth largest and remains the main form of travel in the vast country, but it is poorly funded and deadly accidents often occur. The country is home to hundreds of railway crossings that are unmanned and particularly accident prone, with people often ignoring oncoming train warnings. |

Battleground State: A state is considered a battleground state if its electorate is split relatively evenly between Republicans and Democrats, making state-wide races especially competitive and hard to predict. |

Can Theresa May Be Forced to Hold a Second Brexit Vote? Posted: 19 Oct 2018 12:53 AM PDT There are those in the Conservative Party so against Brexit that they are willing to gang up with the opposition to vote down Theresa May's deal in order to secure a second referendum. For a start, there isn't time before Britain leaves the European Union. This means that to have any chance of a referendum affecting the outcome of Brexit, Britain would need to extend the Article 50 process that governs its departure, something that would require both the EU's agreement and fresh legislation in Parliament. |

Government under pressure to use Salisbury sanctions against Saudi officials after Khashoggi killing Posted: 20 Oct 2018 04:37 PM PDT Saudi officials found to have been involved in the killing of a prominent journalist in Turkey should be targeted by new sanctions introduced by Theresa May in the wake of the Salisbury attack, MPs and campaigners said on Saturday. Andrew Mitchell, the former international development secretary, led calls for the Magnitsky law, which mirrors similar legislation in the US and Canada, to be used against any individuals complicit in the death of Jamal Khashoggi. The intervention came as the government said it was "considering ... our next steps" after the kingdom admitted on Friday night that Mr Khashoggi, a columnist for the Washington Post, was killed in its consulate in Istanbul. Donald Trump said sanctions were a possibility and that questions remained about the Saudi handling of Khashoggi's death. "No, I am not satisfied until we find the answer," he said after a campaign speech in Nevada. "But it was a big first step, it was a good first step. But I want to get to the answer." However, he warned against scrapping an arms deal with the kingdom that would jeopardise thousands of American jobs. Saudi Arabia said that 15 members of an intelligence squad who flew to Istanbul to kidnap Mr Khashoggi had been arrested, along with three Saudi consulate staff. General Ahmed al-Assiri, the deputy intelligence chief, and Saud al-Qahtani, a close aide to Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince, were both sacked for their role in the operation. Saudi officials insisted Crown Prince Mohammed was not involved. Jamal Khashoggi death | The unanswered questions The kingdom said Mr Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi critic, died in a "fist fight" but Turkey said it would keep investigating and would not a allow a cover up. The Magnitsky law, which was passed as part of the Sanctions Act in May, allows the government to target human rights abusers with asset freezes and visa bans. Mr Mitchell, the former international development secretary, who lobbied Mrs May to introduce the measure after Russia's chemical weapons attack on a former spy in Salisbury, said: "The Magnitsky law is designed to stop human rights violators coming to and using Britain and it doesn't matter where they come from, the law should be applied without fear or favour. "It's very important that Britain acts in concert with its friends and allies around the world." Robert Lacey: What next for the House of Saud? Bill Browder, whose campaigning led to the adoption of equivalent legislation in the US, Canada, and several EU countries, told The Sunday Telegraph: "The extrajudicial killing of Jamal Khashoggi and the official cover-up is exactly the kind of situation that Magnitsky sanctions were designed to address. "The British government should use the Magnitsky Act against members of the Saudi regime who played any role in this murder." Germany, France and the European Union all urged an in-depth investigation to find out what happened to the Washington Post columnist after he entered the consulate on October 2 for documents for his marriage. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, in a joint statement with her foreign minister, said the Saudi explanation was not enough. "We expect transparency from Saudi Arabia about the circumstances of his death ... The information available about events in the Istanbul consulate is inadequate," the Germans said |
