Nashville Mayor Megan Barry resigns, pleads guilty to theft following affair with security detail Posted: 06 Mar 2018 09:13 AM PST Nashville Mayor Megan Barry agreed to resign on Tuesday as part of a plea deal regarding a felony theft charge, about one month after admitting to an extramarital affair with her bodyguard. The Tennessee politician had initially planned to stay in office following the revelation that she had an intimate relationship with Sgt. Robert Forrest, but an ethics review and special committee's probe into misuse of funds led the Democrat to cede her role. The 54-year-old Democratic mayor has served in her municipal position since 2015, and news of her extramarital relationship comes after Barry lost her 22-year-old son, Max, to a drug overdose last July. |

McDonald's flips to fresh beef in 3,500 U.S. restaurants Posted: 06 Mar 2018 03:18 AM PST McDonald's Corp said on Tuesday that it had begun serving fresh beef Quarter Pounders and other premium burgers at about 3,500 restaurants in the United States, and most of its other U.S. locations will follow suit by May. The fresh beef expansion comes as McDonald's is improving food quality and increasing menu variety to counter competition from older rivals such as Wendy's Co as well as more premium chains like Chick-fil-A, In-N-Out and Shake Shack Inc. One year ago, McDonald's announced plans to sell some of its burgers made with fresh - rather than frozen - beef in the majority of its roughly 14,000 U.S. restaurants by mid-2018 to produce juicier burgers. |

John Culberson, a nine-term Republican, in November's general election. |

"The Department of Justice and the Trump administration are going to fight these unjust, unfair and unconstitutional policies that have been imposed on you," Sessions is expected to tell law enforcement officers during a speech on Wednesday, according to prepared remarks. |

Russian cargo plane crashes at Syria base, killing all 32 passengers Posted: 06 Mar 2018 06:15 AM PST A Russian transport plane crashed on landing at Russia's Hmeimim airbase in Syria, killing all 32 on board, the defence ministry said in a statement carried by RIA Novosti. The Defense Ministry says the An-26, with 26 passengers and six crew members onboard, crashed Tuesday 1,600 feet from the runway. "The reason for the crash according to preliminary information could have been a technical fault," the ministry added, saying the plane had not come under fire. Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, leases a military base in Syria near the Mediterranean coast. Moscow began conducting air strikes in Syria in September 2015, and its intervention has swung the nearly seven-year conflict firmly in favour of Assad. The latest accident comes after a Sukhoi military jet crashed while trying to take off from Hmeimim in October last year, killing two crew. Russia's most recent officially acknowledged military loss in battle in Syria was last month when a pilot was killed after his plane was downed over Idlib province. Russia's official military losses in the war before the crash were 45. Moscow last month also said that five citizens, not officially affiliated with the Russian military, were likely killed in the strikes in eastern Syria - the first admission of non-military combat casualties. |

Posted: 07 Mar 2018 11:46 AM PST A judge administered multiple electric shocks to a defendant on trial as a "punishment" for not answering his questions properly, an appeals court has heard. Judge George Gallagher ordered Terry Lee Morris to be shocked three times during his 2014 trial in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was accused and subsequently convicted of soliciting sexual performance from a 15-year-old girl. The Texas Eight Court of Appeals in El Paso has overturned the judgement on the basis the shocks "violated" Morris' constitutional rights, the Texas Lawyer website reported. |
