David Hogg has emerged as a powerful advocate for gun control after the Valentine's Day attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, which left 17 people dead. The 18-year-old and his classmates have been described as "pawns" who are being "coached" by activists aiming to restrict firearm ownership in the US. |
British skier dies in French Alps while skiing off-piste Posted: 25 Feb 2018 05:46 AM PST A British skier has died in the French Alps after he and two friends plunged hundreds of feet from a ridge while skiing off piste. In a separate incident, a 13-year-old boy died when both he and his brother fell off a cliff after they got lost while skiing with their family. The Briton, who has not been named, was with two friends in the resort of Oz-en-Oisans on Saturday when they decided to leave the marked slopes. Police said that all three men were in their 20s and were experienced skiers. "They were following ski tracks but they got lost when the tracks came to an end," a spokesman for the gendarme mountain rescue unit, based in nearby Grenoble, told the Telegraph. "They saw a marked slope in the distance and were trying to get to that. But the area they had to go through was very unstable, made up of ridges and a mixture of snow and rocks," he said. All three ended up falling, but not at the same time. The man who died fell somewhere between 100 and 200 metres, said the officer. "It looks like he died instantly. His body rolled down the ridge, bashing off rocks several times before it came to a halt," said the spokesman. One of two other skiiers emerged unscathed from his fall, while the other suffered minor injuries. They were later taken to safety by a gendarme mountain rescue team. Police did not give the men's names. In a separate incident, a 13-year-old French boy was found dead at the foot of a cliff after both he and his brother - who survived - fell from the precipice the night before after getting lost while skiing with their family in Avoriaz. The boys had wandered off piste on Saturday and, as night fell, ended up in a forest whose trees concealed the 490-foot cliff which they fell off. The younger brother, aged 10, spent the night in sub-zero temperatures beside his dead brother at the foot of the cliff. Rescuers eventually found the boys at dawn on Sunday. The younger brother was said to be be injured but in a stable condition. Earlier this week, a young British skier was killed after smashing into a tree at Les Diablerets, a Swiss ski resort, on the edge of a piste while on holiday with his family. |

Rohingya exodus still growing, six months into crisis Posted: 25 Feb 2018 03:46 AM PST Hundreds of desperate Rohingya Muslims are still pouring over the Myanmar border into Bangladesh every week, bringing harrowing accounts of torture and murder, six months after a military crackdown sparked the massive refugee crisis. One of the recent arrivals, Nur Mohammad, said his village in Myanmar's Rakhine state was surrounded by Buddhist vigilantes for days before they were allowed to leave. Thirty-year-old Enayetullah was among the 200 Rohingya who crossed the Naf river into Bangladesh on Friday. |
Iran says Damascus suburbs assault to continue as fighting rages Posted: 25 Feb 2018 07:50 AM PST Iran said pro-Damascus forces would press ahead with attacks on an insurgent enclave near the Syrian capital, as ground fighting raged on there in defiance of a U.N. resolution demanding a 30-day truce across the country. Turkey, too, said its military operations in another theater of war in the north of Syria would not be affected by the unanimous Security Council vote demanding the truce to allow for aid access and medical evacuations. Anti-government rebels said they clashed with pro-government forces near Damascus on Sunday, as rescuers and residents said warplanes struck some towns in the eastern Ghouta pocket. |

Posted: 25 Feb 2018 01:25 PM PST The sheriff of Broward County is facing mounting calls for his resignation following a series of failures before and during the Parkland school shooting, with the governor of Florida announcing on Sunday he was launching an inquiry. Rick Scott, the Republican governor of the state, said serious questions had been raised about the sheriff's office's actions. "I have asked for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to immediately investigate the law enforcement response and will continue to review this matter as more facts come out," he said. "There must be an independent investigation and that is why I asked the FDLE Commissioner to immediately start this process." Last week it emerged that an armed sheriff's deputy, Scot Peterson, was on the campus of Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school when Nikolas Cruz opened fire – but he did not enter the building. "He's the only one with a gun, and a bulletproof vest, and he did nothing," said Brandon Huff, a student at the school. Mr Peterson has resigned. Students evacuated from the school on Valentine's Day Some reports suggested there were three other deputies outside the school when Coral Springs police arrived – but Scott Israel, sheriff of Broward County, denied that. "We will investigate every action of the deputies, and their superiors," said Mr Israel. "It's a voluminous investigation. We're taking hundreds and hundreds of statements. "While the killer was on campus, there was one armed person within the proximity of that school -and that was Peterson." Deputies received at least 18 calls regarding Cruz prior to the Valentine's Day shooting, which killed 17 people. Mr Israel said 16 of those calls were handled "as they should have been", but the remaining two are being investigated. "I can only take responsibility for what I knew of," said Mr Israel. "I've shown amazing leadership. These deputies received the training they needed. "In the five years I've been sheriff we've taken the Broward sheriff's office to a new level. At this point one person didn't do as he should, and it makes me sick to my stomach." Rick Scott, governor of Florida, with, on his right, Scott Israel, sheriff of Broward County Seventy four members of the Florida House have called on Mr Scott to suspend Mr Israel, including the speaker of the House, Richard Corcoran. Bill Hager, a Republican state politician for Boca Raton, went further, calling for Mr Israel to be fired. He wrote a letter to Mr Scott on Saturday, urging him to relieve Mr Israel from his duties for "neglect of duty and incompetence". Mr Hager also cited reports that there were "23 calls to the Broward Sheriff's Office relating to Nikolas Cruz and his home, as well as 39 visits by Broward Sheriff Deputies." He continued: "The sheriff was fully aware of the threat this individual presented to his community and chose to ignore it." But Mr Israel hit back, describing Mr Hager's letter as riddled with false accusations. "It was a shameful, politically-motivated letter and I will not resign," he said. |

Bank of America takes aim at gun-making clients Posted: 24 Feb 2018 09:40 PM PST Bank of America, the second-biggest U.S. bank by assets, said its request to makers of the military-style weapons was in line with those taken by other financial industry companies to help prevent deadly gun rampages. "An immediate step we're taking is to engage the limited number of clients we have that manufacture assault weapons for non-military use to understand what they can contribute to this shared responsibility," the Charlotte, North Carolina-based bank said in a statement. It did not name the clients who make assault rifles. |

Mexican president postpones US visit after heated phone row with Donald Trump over border wall Posted: 25 Feb 2018 09:40 AM PST Mexico's president has postponed his plans to visit the United States after a bad-tempered telephone conversation with President Donald Trump. Mr Trump refused to back down on his border wall rhetoric, according to sources in both countries, leading the exasperated Mexican president to decide against an imminent White House encounter. Mexico is usually one of the first stops for any new president, but Mr Trump is yet to visit as leader, and his Mexican counterpart has not travelled to Washington. On Tuesday, Enrique Pena Nieto spoke to Mr Trump in a 50-minute call in which it was expected that they would lay the foundations for a visit in March. Prior to their conversation, on February 14, Luis Videgaray, Mexico's foreign minister, travelled to Washington and believed he had secured assurances that Mr Trump would not broach the subject of the wall when Mr Pena Nieto visited. But Tuesday's conversation did not go well, both sides told The Washington Post. Mr Trump said he would not be bound by any such agreement and could not commit himself to not talking about the wall. "That was a dealbreaker for us," a Mexican official said, adding that Mr Pena Nieto and his administration were concerned in particular about a reporter asking a question about funding for the wall at a news conference and Trump answering it. Prototypes of the border wall, near San Diego One Mexican official said Mr Trump "lost his temper." US officials described him instead as being frustrated and exasperated, saying that Mr Trump believed it was unreasonable for Mr Pena Nieto to expect him to back off his crowd-pleasing campaign promise of forcing Mexico to pay for the wall. After the phone call, Jared Kushner, Mr Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, who is seen as the "point person" for Mexico, called Mr Pena Nieto and attempted to smooth things over. "The problem is that President Trump has painted himself, President Pena Nieto and the bilateral relationship into a corner," said Arturo Sarukhan, a former Mexican ambassador to the United States. "Even from the get-go, the idea of Mexico paying for the wall was never going to fly." Mr Trump has, in the past, conceded that Mr Pena Nieto was in a difficult position – telling him in a January 2017 phone call "we will work it out." But, he added: "The fact is, we are both in a little bit of a political bind because I have to have Mexico pay for the wall. "I have to. I have been talking about it for a two-year period. . . . If you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that." |
