Tens of thousands commemorate Arafat in Hamas-run Gaza Posted: 11 Nov 2017 05:57 AM PST Tens of thousands of Palestinians gathered in Gaza on Saturday to commemorate the death of veteran leader Yasser Arafat in the first such memorial in the Hamas-run territory since 2007. The anniversary event was billed as a show of national unity after the Islamists of Hamas struck a reconciliation agreement last month with the rival Fatah movement founded and led by Arafat until his death in 2004. |
Is Russia's Submarine Force Dying a Slow Death? Posted: 10 Nov 2017 04:56 AM PST Some big problems with no easy solutions. Is Russia's Submarine Force Dying a Slow Death? In March 2017, Russia's new Yasen-class nuclear attack submarine Kazan launched at the northern port city of Severodvinsk. The Russian navy — already badly depleted since the collapse of the Soviet Union — can't quickly replace most of its existing nuclear submarine fleet, which is approaching the end of its collective lifespan. |

Philippines' Duterte offers to host 'world summit' on human rights Posted: 09 Nov 2017 07:21 PM PST Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who is facing international criticism for his bloody war on drugs, said his country was willing to host a "world summit" to tackle how nations can protect human rights. The firebrand leader, who spoke in a news conference late on Thursday while in Vietnam for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting, said the summit should focus on human rights violations not just in the Philippines but globally. Some western countries and human rights groups have strongly criticized Duterte's anti-narcotics campaign that has killed more than 3,900 suspected drug users and peddlers, in what the police called self-defense after armed suspects resisted arrest. |
Posted: 10 Nov 2017 12:26 AM PST Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on "chronic trade abuses" on Friday, warning an audience of world leaders at a summit in Vietnam that he will always "put America first". The US president also resumed his tough talk on North Korea as he sought to rally Asia-Pacific nations into confronting the "twisted fantasies" of Pyongyang's young leader Kim Jong-un. Mr Trump was speaking to a gathering of CEOs at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in the city of Danang after arriving from a three-day visit to Beijing were he had softened his tone on trade and North Korea. "We can no longer tolerate these chronic trade abuses and we will not tolerate them," he said. He also struck a defiant tone towards Pyongyang, saying the region's future "must not be held hostage to a dictator's twisted fantasies of violent conquest and nuclear blackmail." Donald Trump's in Asia tour, in pictures During his China trip he called on the North to "make a deal", but also urged China and Russia to increase their efforts in reining in Pyongyang's nuclear weapon's programme. In Vietnam he reverted to the more direct language he used in South Korea earlier in his Asian tour when he spoke of the increasing threat to all nations from Pyongyang's military build-up. Melania Trump meets the pandas at Beijing Zoo 00:55 "Every single step the North Korea regime takes toward more weapons is a step it takes into greater and greater danger," he said. Meanwhile, Chinese president Xi Jinping, who is seeking to pitch Beijing as the centre of a new globalist order, told the summit that globalisation is an "irreversible historical trend". Confusion over Putin meeting The APEC meeting is also being attended by Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who was expected by some to meet with Mr Trump. But mixed messages from Washington and Moscow continued on Friday on the potential talks. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said as the US president arrived in Vietnam that a "scheduling conflict" meant the leaders would not be able to formally meet. Donald Trump boards Air Force One to depart for Vietnam from Beijing Airport Credit: Reuters Her comments came a day after secretary of state Rex Tillerson said there was no reason for talks to take place when differences between Washington and Moscow exist over Syria and Ukraine. The White House said it was still possible that Mr Trump could hold an unofficial meeting with his Russian counterpart on the sidelines of the APEC summit, or later when both men will be in the Philippines. And the Kremlin said on Friday that Mr Putin will meet Mr Trump "one way or another". Mr Trump's presidency has been dogged by allegations that his election campaign colluded with Russia to help him get into the White House. An investigation into the matter led by Robert Mueller, the special counsel, recently brought criminal charges against three former advisers to Mr Trump. Chinese media upbeat over 'state visit plus' The US president flew to Vietnam from China, where he made a three-day visit which saw him praising Mr Xi. In one of his final Tweets from the Chinese capital he described his trip as being "very productive" and described Mr Xi as "highly respected". The Global Times newspaper said Mr Trump was changing his views on China. He had "softening his tone" on trade and had "gradually learned that Beijing is indeed making selfless contributions" towards confronting Pyongyang, it said. Trump all smiles on 'positive' visit to China 01:24 The China Daily said that while differences that had been "pestering bilateral ties" had not "instantly disappeared," it was positive on "the constructive approach to these issues the two leaders demonstrated." After his visit to Vietnam, Mr Trump will on Saturday head to Manila for the East Asia Summit and a meeting with Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Mr Trump has also visited Japan during his five-nation 11 day tour of Asia. |

Trump says he trusts Putin's denials of election meddling Posted: 11 Nov 2017 02:48 PM PST By Steve Holland and Denis Pinchuk DANANG, Vietnam (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said he believed President Vladimir Putin when he denied accusations Russia meddled in last year's U.S. election despite U.S. intelligence agencies' conclusion of Russian interference. Trump made the comment after he and Putin met briefly at a summit in Vietnam on Saturday and agreed on a joint statement supporting a political solution for Syria, now in its seventh year of civil war. It was their first encounter since July and came during a low in U.S.-Russia relations and at a time Trump is haunted by an investigation into accusations that Putin influenced the election that brought him to the White House. |

Tensions over Muslim street prayers north of Paris Posted: 10 Nov 2017 08:23 AM PST Around 100 local French lawmakers attempted to block Muslims praying in a street north of Paris on Friday and called on the government to ban what they see as an unacceptable use of public space. The lawmakers, led by the head of the regional government of the Paris area, Valerie Pecresse, disrupted the crowd of around 200 all-male devotees and sang the national anthem in the multiethnic Clichy suburb. "Public space cannot be taken over in this way," Pecresse said at the demonstration alongside the rightwing mayor of Clichy, Remi Muzeau, who like other lawmakers wore a sash in the national colours of blue, white and red. |
Posted: 09 Nov 2017 08:58 PM PST China deployed a soldier to closely watch every step that Donald Trump took as he navigated a set of stairs that Margaret Thatcher tumbled down 35 years ago. Walking sideways just inches from Mr Trump's left shoulder, the soldier fixed his gaze on the US president's feet as he strode down two flights of steps from the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Mr Trump had just concluded talks with Xi Jinping, the Chinese president, on Thursday, and was making his way to his motorcade. He was closely monitored by the attentive soldier for almost 20 seconds, a video captured by The Telegraph shows. Beijing appeared to be taking no chances with the 71-year-old billionaire, and authorities would have been mindful of an incident involving Mrs Thatcher in 1982. The former British prime minister fell down the same stairs at the north entrance of the Great Hall of the People following talks with Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping. Mrs Thatcher became the first serving prime minister to visit Communist China when she arrived in Beijing for the start of complicated and often difficult talks on the future of Hong Kong. She initially believed that the former colony could remain - at least partially - under British control. But she would eventually be forced to back down for one of the few times in her career, agreeing to hand over full sovereignty of the city to China in 1997. Chinese media described her fall, which was captured by television cameras, as the result of Deng's "aggressive negotiations". Margaret Thatcher, accomapanied by Zhao Ziyang, Chinese PM, as she inspects a Peoples Liberation Army guard of honour on her arrival in Beijing in 1982 Credit: AP In a report which identified the north entrance of the building as the scene of the tumble, The Beijing Times said: "She obviously was not in a good mood after talks which lasted two-and-a-half hours." But Mr Trump faced far less antagonism from his Chinese hosts who rolled out what was billed a 'state visit plus'. The US president has praised the welcome he received in a series of tweets and has flattered Mr Xi throughout the trip. The Great Hall of the People is the main ceremonial building for China's Communist Party leaders. Additional reporting by Christine Wei |

Like a fast food drive-thru, but for weed Posted: 10 Nov 2017 05:11 PM PST The largest recreational marijuana store in the country just opened what it claims is the first fast food-style weed drive-thru. NuWu Cannabis Marketplace aims to serve customers in less than a minute from the time they place their orders from their cars, store representatives told the Las Vegas Sun. The dispensary poached drive-thru managers from fast food chains to handle the parking lot chaos and take orders while customers are in line. The Las Vegas Sun reports that NuWu's drive-thru is a converted $30,000 bank teller window, made of bullet-proof glass and framed with bullet-proof Kevlar material. Surveillance cameras monitor both inside and outside of the impenetrable window. SEE ALSO: New weed dispensary has a brewery-style tour to show how cannabis is grown This massive weed marketplace, located on Native American tribal lands in Las Vegas, opened its doors on Oct. 16. Florida parents arrested for neglecting daughter's rotting teeth Posted: 10 Nov 2017 02:38 PM PST A Florida couple who ignored their daughter's 17 rotting teeth have been charged with neglect Jeremie Ervin Maloy, 31, and Cynthia Grace Maloy, 32, were arrested after it was found they had ignored pleas by their daughter's school to deal with the problem, the New York Daily News reported. Police had been investigating the family since the beginning of the year, according to documents from the Bay County Sheriff's office. The problem was first noticed last autumn at the start of the school year, when the child turned up for class with "severely decayed teeth". An investigation was launched by the local Department of Children and Families in February. Such was the state of the child's teeth, according to court papers, that she was only able to eat soft foods. The girl had also complained of being in pain. School officials made several visits to the family residence, even offering transport to take the child to the dentist . "The Maloys never took advantage of this offer for the sake of the child, but Cynthia Maloy did ask for rides to the nearby dollar store to buy cigarettes and food," police officers wrote in their report. Following a court hearing earlier this week the Maloys were granted bail, but ordered to have no contact with their daughter without the approval of a judge. |
