Saudi Arabia arrests princes, ex-ministers: report

Posted: 04 Nov 2017 03:34 PM PDT

Saudi Arabia arrests princes, ex-ministers: reportSaudi Arabia's newly formed anti-corruption commission arrested 10 princes and dozens of former government ministers on Saturday, Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television reported, citing unnamed sources. The arrests came soon after the commission, headed by powerful Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was established by royal decree. "Arrest of 10 princes and dozens of former ministers in Saudi Arabia," Al Arabiya tweeted. There was no official confirmation of the arrests. The 32-year-old crown prince, often known as MBS, is set to be the first millennial to occupy the throne in a country where half the population is under 25, though the timing of his ascension remains unknown. Already viewed as the de facto ruler controlling all the major levers of government, from defence to the economy, Prince Mohammed is widely seen to be stamping out traces of internal dissent before a formal transfer of power from his 81-year-old father King Salman. In September the authorities arrested about two dozen people, including influential clerics, in what activists denounced as a coordinated crackdown. Analysts said many of those detained were resistant to Prince Mohammed's aggressive foreign policy that includes the boycott of Gulf neighbour Qatar as well as some of his bold policy reforms, including privatising state assets and cutting subsidies.

Prosecutors urge court to increase 'shockingly lenient' jail sentence for Oscar Pistorius

Prosecutors urge court to increase 'shockingly lenient' jail sentence for Oscar PistoriusSouth Africa's Supreme Court heard on Friday that the six year sentence handed to disabled athlete Oscar Pistorius for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp,  was "shockingly lenient." Andrea Johnson, a state prosecutor leading an appeal for a tougher prison term, told the court in Bloemfontein that Judge Thokozile Masipa had "misdirected herself" when she handed down a six year sentence for the murder last year. Ms Johnson said: "It was a brutal murder of an innocent woman who had nowhere to hide. It was a senseless killing." Originally Judge Masipa found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide but the state appealed and the Supreme Court changed the charge to murder. Judge Masipa has since retired.  June Steenkamp, mother of Reeva Steenkamp, at the High Court of Appeal in South Africa on Friday Credit: AP Pistorius shot Ms Steenkamp, 29, a model and his girlfriend of less then three months, while she was in his small bathroom cubicle in his apartment in Pretoria in the early hours of Valentine's Day in 2013.  He was initially convicted of culpable homicide. The conviction was changed to murder in 2016 after prosecutors appealed the original sentence.  Ms Johnson argued that Judge Masipa did not acknowledge the brutality of the crime when she handed down the six year sentence last year, as Pistorius used a high calibre weapon and ammunition designed to "mushroom on striking a soft target such as human flesh".  Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp in November 2012, three months before he killed her Credit: LUCKY NXUMALO/AFP Pistorius, who is now 30, is known as the 'blade runner" for his championship sprinting on special prosthetic legs. He is serving his sentence under special conditions because of his disability.  Ms Johnson said Pistorius had shown no "genuine" remorse.   Ronnie Bosielo, the judge who who heads up the five-strong court bench, said: "I am still at a loss. I ask myself why did he fire four times?  He made several attempts to apologise to the (Steenkamp) family. What more must he do?"  Barry Roux, the lawyer who appeared for Pistorius, told the court his client "had no intention to kill Reeva Steenkamp willingly and intentionally as he believed she was an intruder."  The state argued the sentence for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp should be extended to 15 years.  Judgement was reserved on Friday.

New York police say they have 'enough to arrest' Harvey Weinstein after Paz de la Huerta rape allegation

Posted: 03 Nov 2017 10:56 AM PDT

New York police say they have 'enough to arrest' Harvey Weinstein after Paz de la Huerta rape allegation Detectives in New York believe they have enough evidence to arrest Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced Hollywood mogul, after an actress claimed he raped her twice in the city in 2010. Paz de la Huerta, 33, who appeared in the US television series Boardwalk Empire, alleged both attacks took place in her own home about a month apart. New York abandoned it's five-year statute of limitations for rape in 2006, meaning Weinstein could be prosecuted. Detective Nicholas DiGaudio, who is leading the Weinstein investigation in New York, told Vanity Fair: "I believe, based on my interviews with Paz, that from the New York Police Department standpoint we have enough to make an arrest." His comment raised the prospect that Weinstein could be arrested if he returns to his native New York from Arizona, where he has been undergoing treatment at a rehabilitation centre. Paz de la Huerta Credit: AFP Around 60 women have come forward in recent weeks with allegations of sexual assault and harassment against the producer. He is facing police investigations in New York, Los Angels and London. In a statement Weinstein's representative said: "Any allegations of non-consensual sex are unequivocally denied by Mr Weinstein." The Manhattan district attorney's office said a senior prosecutor had been assigned to look into Ms de la Huerta's allegations. She first met Weinstein when she was 14 while making the film The Cider House Rules. The alleged attacks took place when she was 26. She said the first attack happened after Weinstein gave her a lift home from a bar, and on the second occasion he turned up at her home unannounced. The actress told Vanity Fair: "He's like a pig, he raped me. I laid there feeling sick. He looked at me and said 'I'll put you in a play'.  He left and I never heard from him again, he knew he had done a bad thing." Weinstein was seen publicly in Arizona for the first time since entering therapy. A photograph showed him in disguise at a restaurant wearing a blonde wig and orange makeup, and a hat referencing the resurrection of Jesus.
