Alaskans may hold key to health care bill, and they have … issues Posted: 06 Jul 2017 11:58 AM PDT Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan of Alaska leave the chamber after a vote on Capitol Hill on May 10. ANCHORAGE — After a bruising and tiring fight in D.C. over health care legislation, both of Alaska's Republican senators returned to the land of the midnight sun to celebrate Independence Day with parades and other activities, including a chainsawing competition. Both of Alaska's senators have played pivotal roles in the debate and could be deciding votes if the bill finally reaches the Senate floor, giving this often-overlooked state with its unique needs and concerns a disproportionate say in shaping the legislation. |

Trump weighs 'severe' response to N. Korea ICBM test Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:24 PM PDT President Donald Trump said Thursday he was considering a "pretty severe" response to North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile test, even as his defense secretary said the United States is still seeking a diplomatic solution to the standoff. International divisions on how to contain the North Korean threat continued to sharpen, meanwhile, as Russia blocked a UN Security Council statement calling for fresh sanctions and China appealed for a scaling down of rhetoric. Washington has led the push for tougher sanctions in response to the milestone in Pyongyang's drive to threaten the US mainland with a nuclear strike, and Trump has also warned he is ready to use force if necessary. |

Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:56 AM PDT A newly discovered photograph may show that Amelia Earhart survived her mysterious crash, and lived out the rest of her life in Japanese custody. For 80 years, Earhart's fate was unknown, thought to have perished after a suspected plane crash over the Pacific Ocean during an attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. The fresh photo was discovered in America's National Archives, an independent agency that is charged with documenting and preserving historical records related to the US. |

US isolated over climate: G20 host Merkel Posted: 06 Jul 2017 11:00 AM PDT US President Donald Trump faces isolation at Friday's G20 summit over his climate sceptic stance, Chancellor Angela Merkel said, noting that many countries are determined to honour the landmark Paris accord. Trump may have vowed to pull the US out of the 2015 climate protection deal, but "many many other countries want to go on implementing" it, Merkel told journalists. Efforts to halt climate change is a key issue that world leaders gathering from Friday in the German port city of Hamburg are struggling to find consensus on. |

Jerk bear crushes camper's tent and gets her arrested on outstanding warrant Posted: 06 Jul 2017 04:49 PM PDT A bear crashed a camper's tent which ultimately led to her arrest. A woman camping in Centennial Park in Anchorage, Alaska, was rudely awakened by a bear on Tuesday. Police received a phone call from a concerned citizen at approximately 7:30 a.m., claiming that a bear had crashed a tent, possibly with a person inside, the Associated Press reports. SEE ALSO: Angry bear charging a car is a good reminder to leave bears alone When the cops showed up, the bear was gone, and no one responded when they called out for anyone inside the downed tent. However, when police poked a sleeping bag inside the tent, 58-year-old Christine Chalp popped her head out. Chalp claims that she played dead in order to evade the bear. Unfortunately, a bear nearly eating your face is not a good enough excuse to avoid a ticket — or arrest. Police issued Chalp a citation for feeding game after they discovered food and trash around her campsite, which is illegal because it attracts large game such as moose. Oh, yeah, and bears. While issuing the citation, the police discovered that Chalp had a warrant out for her arrest on a misdemeanor failure-to-appear for disorderly conduct, so she was arrested. So basically, this bear blew up her spot which ultimately led to a citation and an arrest. What a jerk. WATCH: 'Golden Girls' starring 4 best dog friends will be your favorite fluffy remake |

The military said it killed 40 assailants as it clashed with extremists in North Sinai, the main focus of the deadly IS insurgency. Security officials said ambulances raced to the sites of the attacks south of the town of Rafah on the border with the Gaza Strip. |

Vietnam renews India oil deal in tense South China Sea Posted: 06 Jul 2017 07:49 AM PDT By Mai Nguyen, Nidhi Verma and Sanjeev Miglani HANOI/NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Vietnam has extended an Indian oil concession in the South China Sea and begun drilling in another area it disputes with China in moves that could heighten tensions over who owns what in the vital maritime region. The moves come at a delicate time in Beijing's relations with Vietnam, which claims parts of the sea, and India, which recently sent warships to monitor the Malacca Straits, through which most of China's energy supplies and trade passes. Vietnam granted Indian oil firm ONGC Videsh a two-year extension to explore oil block 128 in a letter that arrived earlier this week, the state-run company's managing director Narendra K. Verma told Reuters. |
Twitter schools Rick Perry on basic economics after he speaks at a coal plant Posted: 06 Jul 2017 02:15 PM PDT If Econ 101 taught us anything, it's that supply follows demand. But U.S. Secretary of Energy Rick Perry interpreted the basic principle a little differently while at a coal plant in West Virginia Thursday. SEE ALSO: Rick Perry denies the reality that CO2 is the main climate change driver, and here we go again According to Market Intelligence energy reporter Taylor Kuykendall, Perry offered up some wisdom at a tour of the Longview Power Plant. "Here's a little economics lesson: supply and demand. You put the supply out there and the demand will follow." DOE Rick Perry at coal plant:"Here's a little economics lesson: supply and demand. You put the supply out there and the demand will follow." — Taylor Kuykendall (@taykuy) July 6, 2017 But that's not how the laws of supply and demand are usually described. It's not all "build it and they will come" in the real world. Twitter noticed and called out the climate change-denying energy secretary. That is literally the opposite of how it works. The World Is on the Brink of an Electric Car Revolution Posted: 06 Jul 2017 12:04 PM PDT The internal combustion engine had a good run. All this news dropped just in time for Bloomberg New Energy Finance's latest electric car report, which lays out why electric cars are the way of the future and when they're projected to take over the market. |

Philippines' Duterte vows to eat militants after beheadings Posted: 05 Jul 2017 09:13 PM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has threatened to eat alive the Islamist militants behind the abduction and beheadings of two Vietnamese sailors in a furious reaction to the killings. The remains of the two hostages, who were kidnapped along with four other crew members of a Vietnamese cargo ship in November last year, were recovered off the southern region of Mindanao by Philippine troops on Wednesday. The military blamed the killings on the notorious kidnap-for-ransom Abu Sayyaf group with a stronghold in the area, and which is known to behead its hostages unless ransom payments are made. |
Outbreak of hantavirus infections kills three in Washington state Posted: 06 Jul 2017 08:32 PM PDT Five people have been stricken with the rare, rodent-borne hantavirus illness in Washington state since February, three of whom have died, in the state's worst outbreak of the disease in at least 18 years, public health officials reported on Thursday. The three fatal cases also mark the highest death toll from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Washington state during a single year since the respiratory ailment was first identified in the "Four Corners" region of the U.S. Southwest in 1993. Victims in the latest outbreak were men and women ranging in age from their 20s to their 50s from four counties across the state, said David Johnson, spokesman for the Washington State Department of Health. |

New Island Pops Up Off the Coast of North Carolina Posted: 06 Jul 2017 09:16 AM PDT A new island suddenly emerged from the sea just off the coast of North Carolina — but officials warn that the spit of land is too dangerous for humans to explore. The new sandbar island seemingly sprang from the ocean in just a few weeks, the Virginian Pilot reported. The island, which is about 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) long and about 480 feet (146 meters) wide, lies off the coast of Buxton, North Carolina, which is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. |

Arab and Kurdish fighters from the Syrian Democratic Forces broke into Raqa on June 6 after a months-long operation to encircle the northern city. "At least 224 civilians, including 38 children and 28 women, have been killed in air strikes by the global coalition on Raqa since the SDF entered it," said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. |

The most popular Roomba is still on sale, but this hot robot vacuum is even cheaper Posted: 07 Jul 2017 10:34 AM PDT The Roomba 650 is one of the most affordable robot vacuum cleaners in the Roomba lineup, so it stands to reason that it's also the most popular. But there's another model from a Roomba rival that's on sale for even less than the 650, and it also happens to be the best-selling model in Amazon's indoor robotic vacuum category right now. It also has a few awesome features that are nowhere to be found on the Roomba. Check out the ECOVACS DEEBOT M80 Pro Robotic Vacuum Cleaner with Mop and Water Tank, you'll be glad you did.
