Health vlogger eats poisonous plant on livestream, and you’ll totally believe what happens next Posted: 03 Jul 2017 05:00 PM PDT In the fascinating world of second-tier YouTube health vlogging, chemicals bad and plants good. Only, that doesn't work so well when the plant in question is Agave Americana, a Mexico-dwelling poisonous plant that can easily kill a human.
A Chinese vlogger known as "Zhang" thought that eating a giant aloe vera leaf on camera would be her key to success. She fired up a livestream with two large leaves, both of which looked close to aloe vera, which is known for its medicinal properties (although eating the plant raw still isn't a good idea). Unfortunately, Zhang had two leaves from Agave Americana, which looks similar but is far more deadly. She takes one bite, and immediately remarks how bitter and awful it takes. She abandoned the livestream almost immediately and went to hospital. Later, she said that her mouth was "numb" and her throat was "on fire." Doctors treated her for severe rashes and blisters and pumped her stomach to remove any trace of the plant. There's a few things we can take away from this: livestreaming is bad, eating strange plants you found on the internet is a terrible idea, and when alternative medicine screws up, at least the hospital will still be there to save you. |

New case leaks give us another peek at Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 Posted: 04 Jul 2017 11:53 AM PDT The questions surrounding Samsung's upcoming new Galaxy Note 8 continues to become less of a mystery with each passing day. Following a string of specs leaks, BGR exclusively leaked the Note 8's final design late last month. According to our sources, Samsung's upcoming new flagship phablet will feature a look similar to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, but with a few key refinements. The screen-to-body ratio will likely be even more impressive on the Galaxy Note 8 than the 83% figure Samsung achieved on the S8 duo, and there will be a new dual-lens camera setup on the back. Sadly, there's still a fingerprint scanner on the back as well, and it's still peculiarly positioned next to the camera cluster. We've seen it before but as hot as Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note 8 is shaping up to be, it can't hurt to take another look. Now, thanks to a pair of Note 8 case leaks, we can do just that. We have two recent leaks to share that show renders of Samsung's unreleased Galaxy Note 8 in third-party cases. The first comes from a Weibo user whose name translates to "I ice universe," and he's been known in the past to be the source of genuine leaks. This time around, he has a number of renders from a case maker called Senfeng that give us a pretty clear look at the front of the Note 8, as well as the camera and fingerprint sensor cluster on the back. The same Weibo user also shared a series of actual photos of a third-party Galaxy Note 8 case, and it reinforces the design elements we've seen leak a number of times now. And finally, he posted one last render of the bottom of the Note 8 in a third-party protective case. If that last image turns out to be the real deal, it reaffirms the notion that Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 will retain the 3.5mm headphone jack. We all know it's on borrowed time, of course, but at least it has a stay of execution for the time being. Samsung is expected to unveil the new Galaxy Note 8 in late August ahead of its release in early September. |

Massive layoffs loom over Microsoft Posted: 03 Jul 2017 08:40 AM PDT When a company as big as Microsoft finds itself in need of a reorganization, there are almost always casualties that result from the changes. That's exactly what is about to happen to the tech giant, as multiple reports from inside sources suggest that the company is poised to downsize its boxed software business, and the changes could result in a sizable layoffs to Microsoft's sales teams around the globe, affecting thousands of employees.
The layoffs, which will be needed due to redundancies in the reorganized sales division, will be "major" according to reports. They will largely affect those responsible for physical software sales, which is rapidly dying as cloud distribution of software becomes the standard across many industries. However, there's little in the way of specifics regarding exactly what teams and regions will be scaled back. This type of thing is becoming the norm for Microsoft, which just last year slashed several thousands of jobs related to its failing smartphone business. In 2015, the company axed even more than that when it began its butchering of the baggage it acquired from Nokia. Failing to catch a much-needed foothold in the incredibly competitive mobile industry has been Microsoft's greatest failure as of late, and while this new round of rumored layoffs isn't directly related to that, the theme of regular layoffs obviously isn't great news for the company. Microsoft has not commented on the reports, but the layoffs are expected to be announced over the next week or so. |
