15 dead, scores missing hours after landslide buries Chinese village Posted: 24 Jun 2017 10:19 AM PDT By Christian Shepherd BEIJING (Reuters) - Fifteen people were killed in a landslide in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Saturday and about 100 were believed to be still buried in the debris and feared dead, state media said. The landslide swept over more than 60 homes as dawn broke in Xinmo, a remote village in north Sichuan province. Rubble slid 800 meters (half a mile) down a steep slope to block a 2 km stretch of river and 1.6 km of road, official state news agency Xinhua said. |

Trump: I bluffed Comey on ‘tapes’ to keep him honest Posted: 23 Jun 2017 07:17 AM PDT President Trump's warning last month that his conversations with former FBI Director James Comey might have been taped was an attempt to affect Comey's public statements and his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, the president admitted in an interview Friday morning. After refusing to comment for nearly six weeks, Trump finally acknowledged Thursday that he has no such tapes. "When he found out that I, you know, that there might be tapes out there, whether it's governmental tapes or anything else, and who knows, I think his story may have changed," Trump said of Comey in a "Fox & Friends" interview. |

State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Miller is returning to a position at the Rand Corporation and that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has not yet decided what to do with post. |

Arab states issue ultimatum to Qatar: close Jazeera, curb ties with Iran Posted: 23 Jun 2017 03:13 PM PDT By William Maclean, Rania El Gamal and Tom Finn DUBAI/DOHA (Reuters) - Four Arab states that imposed a boycott on Qatar have issued an ultimatum to Doha to close Al Jazeera television, curb ties with Iran, shut a Turkish base and pay reparations, demands so far reaching it would appear to be hard for Doha to comply. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates have sent a 13-point list of demands apparently aimed at dismantling their tiny but wealthy neighbor's two-decade-old interventionist foreign policy which has incensed them. A Qatari government spokesman said Doha was reviewing the list of demands and that a formal response would be made by the foreign ministry and delivered to Kuwait, but added that the demands were not reasonable or actionable. |
Panda mania hits Germany as China's cuddly envoys arrive Posted: 24 Jun 2017 01:55 AM PDT Germany was bracing for panda mania as furry ambassadors arrive from China on Saturday, destined for a new life as stars of Berlin's premier zoo. The pair, named Meng Meng and Jiao Qing, will be jetting in on a special Lufthansa cargo plane, accompanied by two Chinese panda specialists, the Berlin Zoo's chief vet and a tonne of bamboo. Berlin's mayor, China's ambassador to Germany and a gaggle of journalists will greet the VIPs as LH8415 pulls to a stop on the tarmac of Schoenefeld airport. |
Contractors brought in to CIA heaquarters steal $3,000 in vending machine snacks Posted: 23 Jun 2017 04:03 AM PDT Multiple CIA contractors have been sacked after stealing more than $3,000 (£2,360) worth of snacks from vending machines, it has been reported. The machines work with cards that need to be topped up online, so hackers unplugged a cable connecting the machines to electronic payment systems and used unfunded cards to get food at no cost. When the CIA realised that an unusual amount of snacks were disappearing from their vending machines they set up cameras to catch the culprits. |

Israel launches air raid on Syria in return for fire: army Posted: 24 Jun 2017 12:34 PM PDT An Israeli aircraft carried out a strike on Syria after 10 projectiles fired from the war-torn country hit the occupied Golan Heights on Saturday, an army spokesman said. The Israeli Air Force also targeted two Syrian regime tanks in the northern part of the Golan, the spokesman said, adding the projectiles did not cause any casualties. "Because of the unacceptable violation of Israeli sovereignty", Israel has protested to the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) which monitors a 1974 ceasefire between the two countries, he added. |
Minnesota police officer's brutal arrest of driver was 'disturbing', ACLU says Posted: 23 Jun 2017 10:19 AM PDT A Minnesota arrest in which a driver was dragged from his vehicle and repeatedly punched and kneed by a police officer was a "disturbing and completely unnecessary" example of an excessive use of force, the state ACLU has said. Video recently obtained by the Minnesota chapter of the ACLU shows Buffalo Ridge drug taskforce agent Joe Joswiak initiating a traffic stop with his gun leveled at the driver's seat of the vehicle, shouting expletives at the driver, and violently removing him from the vehicle – seemingly before he had a chance to comply with the officer's commands. |
Dinosaurs That Once Roamed Antarctica 'Live' Again in Exhibits and Film Posted: 23 Jun 2017 06:42 AM PDT But nearly 200 million years ago, Antarctica was very different. There were no polar ice caps, it was far warmer and wetter than it is now, and its lush, forest environments were inhabited by a variety of animals — including dinosaurs. Scientists dedicated to uncovering Antarctic dinosaur fossils spend months at a time camped on glaciers and digging in a frozen desert in order to excavate and reconstruct beasts that lived in the distant past. |
The Mautes of the Philippines: from monied family to Islamic State Posted: 22 Jun 2017 10:04 PM PDT By Raju Gopalakrishnan and Manuel Mogato MANILA/MARAWI CITY, Philippines (Reuters) - Before they formed one of the most dreaded militant groups in the Philippines and pledged loyalty to Islamic State, the Mautes were a wealthy, political family in the southern region of Mindanao, largely influenced by the matriarch, Farhana. Soft-spoken and reserved, 60-year-old Farhana Maute owns property in Mindanao and in Manila, and runs a construction business, say people who know the family and security analysts who have scrutinized its background. |
California man vists Disneyland 2,000 days in a row Posted: 22 Jun 2017 09:13 PM PDT As one of the world's largest entertainment companies, Disney is used to adoring fans but one man has topped them all, visiting its California theme park 2,000 days in a row. Jeff Reitz marked the milestone on Thursday, using his Disneyland Resort annual pass which had enabled his trek to the park on a daily basis since January 1, 2012. "What we mostly know about him is that he loves Disneyland," said John McClintock, a spokesman for the theme park. |
Over 1,000 Uber employees demand reinstatement of ex-CEO Travis Kalanick Posted: 23 Jun 2017 12:38 AM PDT More than 1,000 Uber employees have signed a petition calling for the board to reinstate Travis Kalanick in an operational role after he resigned as chief executive of the embattled ride sharing company earlier this week. Mr Kalanick, who helped establish Uber around eight years ago and was instrumental in growing it into a transportation behemoth, announced last week that he would be taking a leave of absence for an unspecified period of time. On Tuesday he resigned, buckling to pressure from major investors in response to a string of scandals that have plagued Uber in recent months. |

Five Republican senators have announced they will not support the bill, which is designed to repeal and replace Obamacare, in its current form. White House officials said on Friday that Trump has been in touch with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and made calls on Thursday and Friday to other lawmakers. |

At least 13 dead in SW Pakistan explosion Posted: 22 Jun 2017 05:46 PM PDT An explosion targeting a police vehicle in Pakistan's southwestern Quetta city on Friday killed at least 13 people and injured around 20 others, officials said. The blast, in front of the office of the Quetta police chief, was claimed by both the local affiliate of the Islamic State group and by Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA), an offshoot of the Pakistani Taliban, according to the SITE monitoring group. Islamic State Khorasan Province, the Middle Eastern group's affiliate in Afghanistan and Pakistan, has been known to work with the myriad of Pakistani militant groups in previous attacks, including with JuA. |

Tesla is interested in constructing a Gigafactory in China Posted: 22 Jun 2017 08:00 PM PDT With Tesla's Gigafactory in Las Vegas already producing lithium-ion batteries for the upcoming Model 3, there are reports that Tesla is already taking concrete steps to develop yet another Gigafactory in China. Hardly a surprise, Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently said during a TED Talk presentation that the company would ideally like to construct as many as four Gigafactories all across the globe. "I will announce locations for between two and four Gigafactories later this year," Musk said on stage, "probably four."
While nothing is set in stone just yet, it's widely believed that Tesla is eyeing another location in the United States along with a location in Europe and China. As for Tesla's ambitions in China, the company earlier today confirmed that it's actively exploring the possibility of developing a manufacturing plant in Shanghai. "Tesla is deeply committed to the Chinese market, and we continue to evaluate potential manufacturing sites around the globe to serve the local markets," a company spokesperson said today. "While we expect most of our production to remain in the US, we do need to establish local factories to ensure affordability for the markets they serve." China of course remains a huge target market for Tesla, and a local production plant in the country would help Tesla avoid a "25 percent import tariff that makes Tesla's Model S sedans and Model X sport utility vehicles more costly than in U.S. showrooms," Bloomberg reports. Speaking to the strategic importance of China, the company in 2017 sold $1 billion worth of cars in the country in 2016 alone. |

The St Louis Metropolitan Police Department described the shooting as a "friendly fire incident" but the injured officer's lawyer said he had been "automatically feared" as a black man. Acting police commissioner Lawrence O'Toole said officers were pursuing a stolen car when three suspects inside opened fire on Wednesday night. |
Trump, Putin and Erdogan behave like autocratic rulers: Germany's Schulz Posted: 23 Jun 2017 05:03 PM PDT The European Union must become stronger in response to a weakening of democracy in the United States, Russia and Turkey, the leader of Germany's centre-left Social Democrats said in remarks published on Saturday. Martin Schulz, who is also a former president of the European Parliament, said that U.S. President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan behaved like "autocratic rulers". Not only through words but also through concrete policies," Schulz told the Passauer Neue Presse. |
Egypt's Sisi ratifies island handover to Saudi Arabia: cabinet Posted: 24 Jun 2017 09:27 AM PDT Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi ratified a treaty that hands over two Red Sea islands to Saudi Arabia in a deal that had sparked protests and a police crackdown, the cabinet said Saturday. Sisi ratified the maritime border treaty days after parliament approved the deal, which has been the subject of a confusing legal battle with one court annulling the treaty and another upholding it. The accord had sparked rare protests in Egypt, with Sisi accused of having traded the islands of Tiran and Sanafir for Saudi largesse. |
