The U.S. military's Pacific Command said it was assessing the type of missile that was fired but it was "not consistent with an intercontinental ballistic missile". Japanese Defense Minister Tomomi Inada said the missile could be a new type. |

Designer Carolina Herrera laments murder of nephew in Venezuela Posted: 13 May 2017 11:45 AM PDT Venezuela-born fashion designer Carolina Herrera on Saturday lamented the killing of her nephew in the crisis-torn country, in what authorities called an apparent kidnapping. State prosecutors said the bodies of businessmen Reinaldo Herrera, 34, and Fabrizio Mendoza, 31, were found late on Thursday in a vehicle abandoned along the highway connecting Caracas to the Caribbean coast. "Our only hope is that the tragic assassination of our young nephew, Reinaldo and his colleague, Fabrizio will serve to mitigate the terrible carnage and murders that are committed against our youth in Venezuela," Herrera, 78, wrote on the Instagram account of her fashion label. |

Huge Ransomware Attack Stopped by Accident: What to Do Posted: 13 May 2017 05:00 AM PDT Update 5/14 5:17 pm PT: Microsoft has criticized the NSA for what it says is the agency's role in weaponizing a weakness in Windows and allowing it to be stolen by hackers, which was reportedly used to launch the largest ransomware attack in history. As reported by the Los Angeles Times, "This attack provides yet another example of why the stockpiling of vulnerabilities by governments is such a problem," wrote Brad Smith, president and chief legal officer at Microsoft. A massive ransomware attack spread across the globe May 12, with reports of computer systems being locked up in Russia, Western Europe, East Asia and North America. |
Merkel's party bags key victory in bellwether state vote Posted: 14 May 2017 10:50 AM PDT Düsseldorf (Germany) (AFP) - Chancellor Angela Merkel dealt a devastating blow to her main rival on Sunday, four months before national elections, when early results showed her party securing a strong win in a regional vote in Germany's biggest state. The SPD only managed to garner 30.6 percent, its worst score in history in the state and sharply down from its 2012 showing of 39.1 percent, in a serious hit to confidence ahead of general elections in September. |

Uighurs are a largely Muslim, Turkic-speaking minority from China's western Xinjiang region. Hundreds, possibly thousands, keen to escape unrest in Xinjiang, have traveled clandestinely via Southeast Asia to Turkey, where many see themselves as sharing religious and cultural ties. |

Berlin backpackers in a bind: To fund Pyongyang or not? Posted: 12 May 2017 08:38 PM PDT It's an unusual dilemma that tourists in Berlin have to grapple with -- will getting into a hostel bunk bed help finance North Korea's nuclear ambitions? Backpackers staying at the Cityhostel found themselves struggling with precisely this question after learning that Pyongyang owns the property and is making money from it. Cityhostel found itself at the centre of a storm after German media reported Tuesday that the North Korean embassy was not just the guesthouse's neighbour but also the owner of the prime real estate. |

Snap earnings 'miss' shows misreading of analyst 'expectations' Posted: 13 May 2017 04:26 AM PDT By David Ingram SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - A widespread view on Wall Street this week was that Snap Inc fell short of revenue forecasts when it posted its first quarterly results as a public company, triggering a big selloff in its shares. In fact there were two distinct camps of forecasters, which suggests the earnings "miss" was a matter of interpretation, and other factors were behind the stock decline. A Reuters review of 19 predictions heading into Snap's earnings report on Wednesday shows that analysts affiliated with the underwriters of Snap's initial public offering in March had far lower revenue expectations than investment firms not involved in the IPO. |

Cyberattack: major cyber attacks over the past 10 years Posted: 13 May 2017 08:43 AM PDT A huge range of organisations and companies around the world have been affected by the WannaCry ransomware cyberattack, described by the EU's law enforcement agency as "unprecedented". One of the first massive cyberattacks to hit a state occurred in spring 2007 in the Baltic nation of Estonia, when a spate of intrusions forced the closure of government websites and disrupted leading businesses. Estonia, which was in the midst of a diplomatic dispute with Russia, blamed Moscow for the attacks, which it denied. |
India skips China's Silk Road summit, warns of 'unsustainable' debt Posted: 13 May 2017 11:54 PM PDT By Sanjeev Miglani NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India has not sent an official delegation to attend the "Belt and Road Forum" in Beijing and instead criticized China's global initiative, warning of an "unsustainable debt burden" for countries involved. Chinese President Xi Jinping is hosting dozens of world leaders and senior officials on Sunday for the country's biggest diplomatic showcase of the year, touting his vision of a new "Silk Road" that opens trade routes across the globe. Government officials from New Delhi did not travel, Indian officials said, although scholars from Indian think-tanks have flown to Beijing to attend some of the meetings at the forum. |

More leaks show the OnePlus 5 will have one crucial feature Posted: 12 May 2017 08:01 PM PDT The Galaxy S8 is finally available in stores, but the OnePlus 5 is one of the mostly hotly-anticipated Android phones right now. The handset will be launched this summer, OnePlus already confirmed, while a slew of reports already revealed almost everything there is to know about the handset. We still don't know what the phone will look like, and reports offer conflicting details regarding one of its most important features. But there's a new leak that might settle it.
The OnePlus 5 is expected to feature a dual lens rear camera on the back, although it's unclear whether it'll have a horizontal or vertical orientation. A series of images posted on SlashLeaks indicate the camera will have two lenses and will be placed vertically, in a central location. The flash is positioned under the camera, and it's followed by the OnePlus logo. One other detail to note is that there's no fingerprint sensor on the back. That means it's positioned on the front side of the handset, probably just below the display. SlashLeaks posted four images that show various proposals for the rear camera and antenna lines design. Aside from the minor camera, flash, and antenna differences, the renders show the same overall design for the handset. It's unclear at this time which one will be chosen as the final design, and that's assuming these leaked renders have indeed leaked from OnePlus. A render for the front side of the handset isn't available, but here are the images posted on SlashLeaks: |

Traffic jams, break-ins could cost Germany's SPD key state vote Posted: 14 May 2017 05:25 AM PDT By Joseph Nasr BERLIN (Reuters) - Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservatives hoped to unseat the ruling Social Democrats (SPD) in an election on Sunday in Germany's most populous state, the final electoral test for both parties before a federal vote in September. The Christian Democrats (CDU) aimed to seize on anger among the 18 million inhabitants of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) over clogged traffic, rising crime, an underperforming education system and relatively high unemployment to win. The SPD has governed NRW for most of the post-war years since 1945, and losing power in what they regard as their bastion would raise serious doubt about their chances of toppling Merkel in just over four months' time. |

"We have arrested two men under various sections -- murder and rape also," Jagjeet Singh, spokesman for Sonipat city police in Haryana, told AFP. |
