Bomb kills 25 as it hits convoy of Pakistan Senate deputy Posted: 12 May 2017 09:40 AM PDT By Gul Yusufzai QUETTA, Pakistan (Reuters) - A bomb exploded next to a convoy of the deputy chairman of the Pakistan Senate on Friday in the violence-plagued province of Baluchistan, killing at least 25 people, officials said. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombing. The group's Amaq news agency said a bomber wearing an explosive vest carried out the attack, which was condemned by a former local Islamic State affiliate. |
A gigantic, bloody dead thing just washed up in Indonesia and nobody knows what it is Posted: 12 May 2017 10:01 AM PDT The sea still holds great mysteries for mankind. A few examples of this are the peculiar disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle, the origins of the Baltic Sea Anomaly, and whatever the heck just washed up on the shore of the Indonesian island of Seram. The massive 50-foot-long creature, long since deceased, is already decaying, and nobody can seem to offer a definitive answer as to exactly what it is... or was.
The discovery, reported by the Jakarta Globe, was made by a resident of the island who, after spotting it in the dark of night, initially thought the creature was a stranded boat. Now, the dead animal has become a bit of a local celebrity, as residents stop by to catch a glimpse of whatever it might be. https://www.facebook.com/mbs.lessiputy/posts/1497352876949760 In the initial report, the creature is said to be a giant squid, and notes that local government is being asked to deal with its remains. However, others have suggested that it's not a squid at all, but a dead whale which has grown unidentifiable due to decay. In terms of size, both sperm whales and giant squids would seem to match, as both can reach similar lengths, though if the squid theory proves true it would be a particularly large specimen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NR9S6XWG-I0 Videos shot by locals seem to support the idea that the rotting corpse is actually that of a whale, as large bones appear to be visible among the remains. Whatever it is, it's huge, dead, and gross. |

Jihadists snaring starving civilians in Mosul death trap Posted: 11 May 2017 03:50 AM PDT Jihadists preparing for a desperate last stand in Mosul are booby-trapping homes with civilians inside and welding doors shut on starving families to prevent the population from fleeing, residents say. Iraqi forces are closing in fast on the Old City and its narrow streets, where the Islamic State group is expected to focus its significantly depleted military capabilities. The most violent group in modern jihad has repeatedly resorted to human shields to cover its movements but in Mosul the jihadists appear to be taking the tactic to new levels. |

South Korea urges 'parallel' talks, sanctions to rein in North Posted: 11 May 2017 03:58 PM PDT By Ju-min Park and Christine Kim SEOUL (Reuters) - South Korea's new president launched international efforts to defuse tension over North Korea's weapons development on Thursday, urging both dialogue and sanctions while also aiming to ease China's anger about a U.S. anti-missile system. Moon first spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping and later to Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The conversations were dominated by how to respond to North Korea's rapidly developing nuclear and ballistic missile programs, which are in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions. |

The International Space Station has sprung a leak Posted: 12 May 2017 06:18 AM PDT The International Space Station is old. The first pieces of it were sent into orbit almost two decades ago, and it's been under near constant construction and remodeling ever since, adding new components and expanding the craft's usefulness. But it's still old. We were reminded of that today when a much-anticipated spacewalk at the ISS was delayed due to an unfortunate malfunction: a water leak.
According to NASA, the leak was discovered just before two US astronauts — Peggy Whitson and Jack Fischer — were scheduled to perform the 200th spacewalk at the International Space Station. The leak was found while the astronauts were waiting in the airlock, and was traced to the connection between an umbilical hose attached to Fischer's spacesuit and the ISS itself. The umbilical, which acts as the lifeline between the astronauts as the ISS, provides power to the batteries in their equipment and circulates oxygen. Thankfully, NASA has a contingency plan for just such an occurrence: ditching the troublesome hose and just using one, for both astronauts. Now, instead of each astronaut having a functioning connection to the spacecraft, they'll just trade off, handing the connector back and forth and utilizing backup battery power in their suits when not connected. NASA maintained that the actual spacesuits worn by the astronauts are "perfectly fine." Despite its age, the International Space Station still seems to have a lot of life left, and while some reports over the years suggested that the craft would be decommissioned sooner rather than later, NASA's recently penned deal with Boeing includes a commitment to maintain the ISS hardware through at least 2028. |
Iran's Rouhani vows to end remaining sanctions in final debate Posted: 12 May 2017 09:46 AM PDT Iran's President Hassan Rouhani vowed Friday to continue rebuilding ties with the world and get rid of remaining sanctions during a fiery final debate a week ahead of the election. Rouhani, who is seeking a second four-year term next Friday, said Tehran's nuclear deal with world powers had ended many sanctions and brought a windfall from renewed oil sales over the past year that could now be invested. "I will engage myself in lifting all the non-nuclear sanctions during the coming four years and bring back the grandeur of Iran and the Iranian people," he said. |
Mexican activist who took on drug cartels that killed her daughter murdered in her home Posted: 12 May 2017 02:19 AM PDT A Mexican activist who pioneered a support network for the parents of missing children has been murdered by gunmen who invaded her home. Miriam Rodriguez Martinez founded a local group of 600 families searching for their relatives five years ago after her daughter Karen was kidnapped and killed by the Los Zetas drug cartel. Mrs Rodriguez lived in the municipality of San Fernando, one of the most crime-ridden areas in Mexico with the highest rate of kidnappings. |

For more than two years there was no sign of the girls. |
Trump adviser's family business scraps China sales pitch Posted: 12 May 2017 06:04 AM PDT The real estate company owned by the family of US President Donald Trump's son-in-law and adviser withdrew Friday from a sales pitch to Chinese investors after it sparked an uproar. White House aide Jared Kushner's sister headlined events in Beijing and Shanghai last weekend to seek more than $150 million in investment in a US luxury apartment complex. Nicole Kushner Meyer urged wealthy Chinese to buy stakes through the EB-5 visa program that offers US residency in exchange for at least $500,000 investment in a US business that must also create at least 10 American jobs. |

Judge orders Trump team to hand over fresh travel ban drafted by Rudy Giuliani Posted: 12 May 2017 02:50 AM PDT A federal judge has ordered the Trump administration to hand over a memo drafted with guidance from former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani outlining a proposed new travel ban designed to be more "palatable" to the public as well as legally sound. The latest draft is designed so that it does not obviously target Muslims, in the way that the first controversial ban – ruled unlawful by several judges – was considered to do. Mr Giuliani, a lawyer, is currently an informal adviser on matters of security to the White House and played a leading role in Donald Trump's presidential campaign. |

The US justice department is refusing to disclose FBI documents relating to Donald Trump's highly contentious election year call on Russia to hack Hillary Clinton's emails. In a filing to a federal court in Washington DC, the DoJ states that "because of the existence of an active, ongoing investigation, the FBI anticipates that it will … withhold all records". |

OnePlus 5’s final design may have just leaked Posted: 12 May 2017 08:27 AM PDT Android fans, we have good news and bad news. The good news is that a new leak may have just revealed the final design of the hotly anticipated new OnePlus 5, which is expected to be unveiled in the coming months. What's more, the source of the leak has a reasonably good track record. The bad news, however, is that the source of the leak himself admits that he is unsure of its authenticity. While the OnePlus 5 pictured in the supplied image does align well with what we've heard elsewhere, that obvious casts a somewhat dubious light on this new leak. Twitter user @mmddj_china has posted a number of leaks in the past that have turned out to be the real deal, and now he's back with a new potential leak focused on the upcoming OnePlus 5. As you'll recall, the OnePlus 5 is hotly anticipated not just because it is expected to offer specs that are in line with the Galaxy S8, but because it is expected to offer specs that are in line with the Galaxy S8 at a MUCH lower price point. According to the latest rumors, the phone will start at just $450. That means you'll get specs and performance that rival the Galaxy S8, which costs $750+. Just about everything there is to know about the OnePlus 5 has leaked at this point, but we're still not sure what the new "flagship killer" will look like. If @mmddj_china's latest leak is accurate, however, we might have just gotten our first look at the new OnePlus phone. The image above, which was posted to Twitter on Friday, shows what is believed to be a render of the OnePlus 5 in an OEM protective case. The leak aligns with earlier design rumors even though the source is unsure of its authenticity. We can see the phone's rumored dual-lens camera emerging from OnePlus' famous textured case, and the general shape of the phone is in line with what we've seen from OnePlus in the past. Sadly, not much else can be gleaned from this render, though the phone should be unveiled soon, so we don't have much longer to wait before it's made official. |
Pope greeted by thousands on Fatima pilgrimage Posted: 12 May 2017 02:54 PM PDT Fátima (Portugal) (AFP) - Pope Francis called for harmony "among all people" Friday after arriving at Portugal's holy site of Fatima where he was greeted by thousands of pilgrims gathered to mark 100 years since child shepherds had visions of the Virgin Mary. The Argentine pontiff flew into the central Portuguese town on board a helicopter, circling twice over a giant, 400,000-capacity, esplanade that faces the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima to enthusiastic cheering. Disembarking in a nearby stadium, he set off in his "Popemobile" for a journey through town followed closely by hovering helicopters, ending up at the sanctuary where pilgrims from all over the world had been waiting eagerly for hours. |
Leaked OnePlus 5 Specs Surpass Galaxy S8 Posted: 12 May 2017 06:36 AM PDT OnePlus isn't saying what its upcoming flagship handset might offer, but that isn't stopping the leaks from springing across China. A Chinese reseller named Geekbuying has revealed what it says are the actual specs for the upcoming OnePlus 5. According to Android Headlines, which obtained a copy of the specs from Geekbuying, the handset will come with a 5.5-inch quad-HD screen and 64GB of storage. |
