'Lack of options' force 4 million to flee from one conflict to another: report Posted: 14 Sep 2016 05:20 PM PDT By Lin Taylor LONDON (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - For Ahmad al-Rashid, fleeing from his home in Aleppo, northern Syria, to Iraq in 2013 was the safest choice he had. "[Iraq] itself was in a crisis, it got worse and worse. Syria and Iraq were the same - so being a refugee in Iraq was just like being in Aleppo," he said at a media briefing organized by aid group Oxfam UK. |

Aligned with Russia in Syria, Pentagon awkwardly treads on new terrain Posted: 14 Sep 2016 03:05 PM PDT By Phil Stewart and Yeganeh Torbati WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For Pentagon officers who cut their teeth during the Cold War, the prospect of U.S. battlefield cooperation with Russia in Syria is not only uncomfortable. Against that background, the reactions of U.S. military officials range from caution to outright skepticism over a Geneva-based "joint integration center" that may soon bring together American and Russian militaries to discuss shared targets for the first time since World War Two. There is a trust deficit with the Russians," acknowledged General Joseph Votel, head of the U.S. military's Central Command, even as he voiced support for the initiative at a forum on Wednesday. |

Powell Email Leak Shows Reluctance to Attack Trump Posted: 14 Sep 2016 11:15 AM PDT Leaks of hacked emails have, in general, been bad news for Democrats and Hillary Clinton in particular over the past few months. The emails, published by the website DCLeaks.com, make clear that Powell holds Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump in extremely low regard. Powell, who ran the State Department in the first term of the George W. Bush administration and is also a respected former US Army General and former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, does not temper his disdain for Trump. |

French police hold three teens over jihadist links Posted: 14 Sep 2016 09:37 AM PDT Three teenagers linked to an Islamic State group jihadist have been arrested around Paris in the past week as investigators probe the use of an encrypted messaging app to plot attacks in France, judicial sources said Wednesday. On Wednesday, a teenager was arrested in a dawn raid on his home in northeastern Paris as part of an investigation into the network of French extremist Rachid Kassim. The 15-year-old, who was already on a watchlist of known radicals, was also arrested over his links to Kassim, who is suspected of using Telegram to direct attacks on France from IS-controlled territory in Iraq or Syria. |
Obama plans 30 percent increase in refugees. Why Dems and GOP are upset Posted: 14 Sep 2016 08:56 AM PDT The White House informed Congress Tuesday that it plans to accept 110,000 refugees into the US from around the world during the fiscal year that begins next month. The 30-percent increase angered some Republicans while disappointing those who say the US should accommodate as many as 200,000 of the world's displaced people, who number more than 65 million, according to estimates by the United Nations. "We must remain compassionate toward refugees but we also need to make sure that we use commonsense [sic]," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, a Republican from Virginia, said in a statement. |

US gives $181 million in additional relief aid to Iraq Posted: 14 Sep 2016 08:25 AM PDT The United States on Wednesday announced it was providing $181 million (160 million euros) in additional humanitarian assistance to Iraq ahead of an operation to retake the jihadist hub of Mosul. The announcement was made by US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken shortly after he arrived in Baghdad for meetings, including with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. "Today I am pleased to announce that the United States is providing more than $181 million in additional life-saving assistance to help meet critical humanitarian needs of those displaced by conflict, including those who will be affected as Mosul is liberated," he told reporters. |
Turkish ruling party politician gunned down in restive southeast Posted: 14 Sep 2016 07:56 AM PDT A politician of Turkey's ruling AK party was shot dead on Wednesday in front of his house in the largely Kurdish southeast, where insurgency is rising and two dozen opposition mayors have been removed over alleged militant links. Ahmet Budak, an AK Party politician who was an unsuccessful candidate in parliamentary elections last November, was gunned down in the Semdinli district of Hakkari province close to the borders with Iran and Iraq, security sources said. Southeastern Turkey has seen a surge in violence since the PKK, which has waged a three-decade insurgency for Kurdish autonomy in the region, abandoned a ceasefire in 2015. |
U.S. offers humanitarian aid as Iraq prepares Mosul offensive Posted: 14 Sep 2016 07:51 AM PDT By Stephen Kalin BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States said on Wednesday it would give Iraq $181 million in humanitarian aid, anticipating a wave of displaced people when Iraqi forces launch a drive to recapture the northern city of Mosul from Islamic State. The advance on Mosul, the biggest city held by the militant group also known as ISIL, could begin as soon as next month. "We are now in a position where ISIL here in Iraq is increasingly on the run and on the ropes, and the urgent work ahead is to complete that effort. |
