Turkish army says five soldiers killed in clashes with Kurdish militants Posted: 29 Jul 2016 01:24 PM PDT Turkey's army said on Friday that five soldiers were killed and eight wounded in clashes with Kurdish militants in the southeastern district of Cukurca. Security sources said that soldiers carrying out a security check on the road near Cukurca in Hakkari province bordering Iraq and Iran came under an attack by Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants. The army had lost contact with one other soldier during the clashes and a search operation was under way, a statement from the military said. |

Posted: 29 Jul 2016 12:34 PM PDT SRINAGAR, India (AP) — In Indian-controlled Kashmir, where violence has come in grim cycles for more than two decades, people know what to expect when tempers rise. Furious young men hurl rocks and shout for an end to Indian rule. The violent crackdown comes swiftly, as Indian paramilitary soldiers pour into the streets. Then the shooting starts, the hospitals grow crowded and the siege begins. The most recent spate of violence has been the worst in years, killing some 50 people since July 8. It started last month after Indian soldiers killed Burhan Wani, a charismatic 22-year-old rebel who attracted a following in large part by using the tools of his age — social media. |

U.S. general denies involvement in Turkish coup attempt Posted: 29 Jul 2016 10:53 AM PDT The commander of U.S. Central Command, General Joseph Votel, on Friday rejected claims by Turkish officials that he supported a failed coup attempt earlier this month. "Any reporting that I had anything to do with the recent unsuccessful coup attempt in Turkey is unfortunate and completely inaccurate," Votel said, according to the statement from U.S. Central Command. Turkey has undertaken purges of its military and other state institutions following the failed coup, targeting the supporters of U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, accused by Ankara of masterminding the July 15-16 coup attempt. |

Aleppo plan must ensure protection for Syrians whether they leave or stay: ICRC Posted: 28 Jul 2016 07:47 PM PDT A proposal to create a humanitarian corridor into Aleppo must ensure that Syrians are protected and supported whether they choose to leave or to stay, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Thursday. All warring sides must allow aid agencies access to assess civilian needs and ensure that families who choose to leave are kept together, the aid agency said in a statement reacting to Russia's plan for a humanitarian corridor. "What we need urgently is a humanitarian pause in all areas of Aleppo affected by the violence," said Robert Mardini, ICRC director for the Near and Middle East, on his return from Syria and Iraq. |
