Security concerns fail to quell cheers at German Wagner fest Posted: 25 Jul 2016 04:13 PM PDT By Michael Roddy BAYREUTH, Germany (Reuters) - Security concerns after killings in Germany, coupled with Islamic elements in a new production of Richard Wagner's opera "Parsifal", created a nervous opening for the annual Wagner festival in Bayreuth on Monday. A police roadblock at the bottom of the drive leading up the "Green Hill" to Wagner's specially built 19th-century opera house forced people in formal evening wear to walk in the muggy summer air. Peter Emmerich, the festival's spokesman, said security concerns were clearly having an impact. |

Nearby, but far away: Why aid doesn't make it from Baghdad to refugee camp Posted: 25 Jul 2016 09:12 AM PDT "They called me and said, 'They are killing us,' " says Jeremy Courtney, founder of the US group Preemptive Love, adding that the Iraqi and US air strikes were close enough to damage the relief vehicles and the hearing of one of the aid workers huddled in the sand. The anti-IS security operation trapped the Preemptive Love staff and their partners from the Iraq Health Aid Organization in the desert overnight. It was a vivid illustration of the uncharted hazards of delivering aid in the world's increasingly dangerous conflict zones that are leading to what some officials say is a crisis in the worldwide relief distribution system. |

After truck attack in Nice, Italy frets about European security cooperation Posted: 25 Jul 2016 06:54 AM PDT By Emilio Parodi MILAN (Reuters) - After the truck attack that killed 84 people in Nice, Italy tightened controls at four border crossings with France over fears an assailant could sneak across onto Italian soil. The rapid action reflected growing Italian concern about weak cooperation on security matters in the European Union after a spate of deadly attacks -- in France, Belgium and now Germany. "What happened in Nice, and in a sense also what happened in Munich, only reinforces what I am saying: that we need to focus everything on prevention and share all useful information," said Claudio Galzerano, a senior official with Italian anti-terrorism police in charge of international cooperation. |
