Afghan refugee with ax attacks passengers on German train Posted: 18 Jul 2016 05:26 PM PDT A 17-year-old Afghan refugee wielding an ax and a knife attacked passengers on a train in southern Germany on Monday evening, severely wounding four, before he was shot dead by police, the interior minister for the state of Bavaria said. Speaking on German public television, Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said it was too early to speculate about the motives of the attacker, who he said was believed to have been living in a home for unaccompanied minors in Ochsenfurt, near the city of Wuerzburg. The attack comes just days after a Tunisian delivery man plowed a 19-tonne truck into crowds of Bastille Day revelers in the southern French city of Nice, killing 84. |
U.S. says hopes to raise in excess of $2 billion in aid for Iraq Posted: 18 Jul 2016 04:58 PM PDT The United States expects to raise more than $2 billion this week for war-torn Iraq during a pledging conference in Washington, a senior State Department official said on Monday. The Iraq donor meeting of 24 countries is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, Germany, Japan, Kuwait and the Netherlands. A broader meeting on a U.S.-led campaign to fight Islamic State militants will be held on Thursday. |
Louisiana gunman 'targeted and assassinated' officers: police Posted: 18 Jul 2016 04:55 PM PDT The black U.S. Marine Corps veteran who shot dead three police officers in Louisiana's capital targeted them and assassinated them, authorities said on Monday, as the United States reeled from the latest deadly violence involving police and African-Americans. "There is no doubt whatsoever that these officers were intentionally targeted and assassinated," Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson said of the Sunday incident at the news conference. |

Ex-Marine 'assassinated' Baton Rouge cops: police Posted: 18 Jul 2016 03:24 PM PDT The black former Marine and Iraq war veteran who shot dead three police officers in the southern US city of Baton Rouge deliberately targeted the cops, but his motive remained unclear, officials said Monday. Louisiana investigators called for patience as they determine why the shooter -- identified as Gavin Long -- opened fire on the officers on Sunday, the day he turned 29. It was the second calculated attack on law enforcement in 10 days, after the slaying of five officers in Dallas -- attacks that have kept the nation on edge. |
Iraq war vet, new father among Baton Rouge gunman's targets Posted: 18 Jul 2016 03:18 PM PDT (Reuters) - One of the three police officers killed by a gunman in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was a military veteran who served three tours in Iraq. Law enforcement officials provided new details on Monday about the six officers who were slain or wounded during an ambush a day earlier, including a sheriff's deputy fighting for his life after being shot in the head and stomach. Following are updates on the officers who Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson said were "intentionally targeted" by the gunman. |
Failed Turkey coup attempt poisons relations with US Posted: 18 Jul 2016 03:12 PM PDT The failed coup attempt in Turkey and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's firm crackdown on the alleged plotters have aggravated ties between Washington and Ankara, already poisoned by the war in Syria and human rights issues. Although they are NATO allies and officially partners in the fight against the Islamic State group, the United States and Turkey have seen their relations take an icy turn in recent months. US Secretary of State John Kerry issued a rather stern call to order on Monday. |
Failed Coup in Turkey: What’s Next and How it Could Affect U.S. Relations Posted: 18 Jul 2016 02:05 PM PDT Late Friday night, an ambiguous faction of the Turkish military launched a coup to take over the government from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Over two hundred civilians and twenty-four coup plotters lost their lives, according to Turkey's prime minister. The Turkish government regained control of the country less than 24 hours after the coup began. |
Effects of Baton Rouge shooting rippled outward, returned Posted: 18 Jul 2016 02:01 PM PDT CHICAGO (AP) — A racially charged narrative has re-emerged in the U.S. due to fatal shootings of black men by white officers as well as the shooting deaths of eight officers in Texas and Louisiana. This round of violence — and protests against such violence — began and continued this weekend in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Here's a look at what's happened in the span of less than two weeks in July: |
Baton Rouge tragedy puts focus on challenges faced by black police Posted: 18 Jul 2016 01:36 PM PDT In the midst of his community's turmoil, physically and emotionally drained, Baton Rouge Police Officer Montrell Jackson logged onto social media and, like millions of others within the electronic cacophony of American democracy, typed a quick update for family and friends. "In uniform I get nasty hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat," the 10-year police veteran wrote in a July 8 Facebook post, reflecting on what has become an issue of sudden urgency nationwide – the sense that police officers face an era of rising risk as they walk their beats. A black man in blue, a husband and father to a newborn son, and a human being reeling after an unprecedented conflation of violence set off by America's deep-seated conflicts over race and policing, Officer Jackson wondered whether Baton Rouge, the city he loved, actually loved him back. |
AP FACT CHECK: No proof of shooting motive as Trump claims Posted: 18 Jul 2016 01:18 PM PDT A key argument Donald Trump makes in his presidential run is that he will keep America safe, both by fighting terrorism overseas and restoring law and order back home in the wake of a series of shootings against police. On Monday, Trump tied the two issues together, suggesting that the shooter in the latest police killing in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Sunday was motivated by "radical Islam." |
Allies Squabble Over Attempted Coup in Turkey, US Condemns Suggestions of Complicity Posted: 18 Jul 2016 01:10 PM PDT Today the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey issued a blistering rebuke of Turkish President Recep Erdogan, who has suggested publicly in recent days that the United States is harboring a terrorist he claims is responsible for Friday's failed a military coup. "Some news reports -- and, unfortunately, some public figures -- have speculated that the United States in some way supported the coup attempt," Ambassador John Bass wrote in a statement. Turkey is a member of the NATO alliance and is a key partner for the coalition fighting against ISIS. |
After Nice attack, French Muslims feel fear and alienation Posted: 18 Jul 2016 12:02 PM PDT By Richard Lough and Sophie Sassard NICE, France (Reuters) - In the poor Nice suburb of Ariane, many Muslims feel their community is being unfairly blamed for the Bastille Day attack that killed 84 people, and fear discrimination and social divisions will grow in its wake. Islamic State claimed the attack and hailed Tunisian-born Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, who drove a truck through a crowd of revelers on the French city's sea-front promenade last Thursday, as one if its soldiers. The Paris prosecutor said on Monday that, while there was no evidence that he had direct links to Islamic State, he had recently developed an interest in radical Islam. |

Police detained the attacker, identified as 26-year-old Ruslan Kulikbayev, in a shootout on a busy central street after he had gone on the rampage, attacking a police station and an office belonging to the KNB security service. Kulikbayev had been imprisoned before for robbery and illegally possessing weapons and had "became close to Salafists" in prison, KNB security service head Vladimir Zhumakanov told a Security Council meeting. |

Another cop acquitted in death of Baltimore black man Posted: 18 Jul 2016 09:24 AM PDT The most senior Baltimore police officer to face trial for the death of Freddie Gray was acquitted of all charges Monday, in a case that sparked riots and fueled a national debate over police treatment of black Americans. Local media reported the verdict handed down by a judge in the case of Brian Rice, 42, the fourth of six Baltimore police officers to go on trial for Gray's death. The first three trials ended in two other acquittals and one hung jury, raising questions of whether anyone will ever be punished for Gray's death, which police say was an accident. |

U.N. says Iraq's battle of Mosul may cost $2 billion in aid Posted: 18 Jul 2016 08:00 AM PDT By Tom Miles GENEVA (Reuters) - An expected Iraqi assault on the Islamic State stronghold of Mosul is likely to cause mass civilian casualties and force hundreds of thousands to flee their homes, the United Nations said on Monday. It appealed for funds to deal with the humanitarian crisis, saying it would cost $284 million to prepare the necessary aid and up to $1.8 billion to deal with the aftermath. "The impact of the Mosul military campaign on civilians will be devastating," the U.N. said in the summary of its Iraq humanitarian response plan. |
Iraq marshlands named UNESCO world heritage site Posted: 18 Jul 2016 07:56 AM PDT UNESCO has named Iraqi marshlands once ravaged by dictator Saddam Hussein as a World Heritage Site, a bright spot for a country where jihadists have repeatedly sought to wipe out history. The area named "is made up of seven sites: three archaeological sites and four wetland marsh areas in southern Iraq," UNESCO said. "The archaeological cities of Uruk and Ur and the Tell Eridu archaeological site form part of the remains of the Sumerian cities and settlements that developed in southern Mesopotamia between the 4th and the 3rd millennium BCE," it said. |

Ex-US Marine kills three Baton Rouge police officers Posted: 18 Jul 2016 03:31 AM PDT An ex-US Marine and Iraq war veteran shot and killed three Baton Rouge police officers on Sunday, in an act reminiscent of slayings in Dallas to avenge African-Americans killed by police. The shooting, which also wounded three other officers, took place in a city scarred by racial tensions and protests against police brutality since the July 5 death of Alton Sterling, a black man shot at point-blank range by white police. Louisiana State Police Superintendent Colonel Mike Edmonson told reporters the gunman -- identified by US media as Gavin Long, 29 -- was killed in a gunfight and there are no suspects at large. |
Iraqi cleric Sadr says new US troops 'a target' Posted: 18 Jul 2016 01:20 AM PDT A powerful Iraqi Shiite cleric whose militiamen battled US forces after the 2003 invasion has said that hundreds more American troops being sent to Iraq are "a target for us". Pentagon chief Ashton Carter announced on a recent visit to Baghdad that 560 extra military personnel would be sent as part of efforts to combat the Islamic State group, which overran large areas north and west of Baghdad in 2014. "They are a target for us," Moqtada al-Sadr said in a statement on his website on Sunday, responding to a question about Carter's announcement. |

Just days earlier, one of the slain officers had posted an emotional Facebook message about the challenges of police work in the current environment. |
