US satirist Stewart quits 'Daily Show' after 16 years Posted: 06 Aug 2015 04:33 PM PDT Jon Stewart, one of America's greatest satirists, hosts his final episode of "The Daily Show" on Thursday, the end of an era for fans after 16 years as a unique voice in US broadcasting. Loved by liberals as a voice of reason, distrusted by conservatives for his left-of-center perspective, the clever, biting and funny Stewart will air his final show on Comedy Central at 11pm (0300 GMT). Despite sightings of rock legend and fellow New Jersey native Bruce Springsteen outside the studios, the content of the final show and the guest list was a closely guarded secret, even as the hash tag #JonVoyage trended on twitter. |
Wife of killed Islamic State group leader in Iraq custody Posted: 06 Aug 2015 04:20 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The wife of an Islamic State group leader who was captured earlier this year in a military operation that left her husband dead, has been transferred to Iraqi custody after being detained for months by the U.S. |
Wife of killed Islamic State leader now in Iraq custody Posted: 06 Aug 2015 04:07 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The wife of an Islamic State leader who was captured earlier this year in a military operation that left her husband dead, has been transferred to Iraqi custody after being detained for months by the U.S. |
Displaced Iraq Christians in frontline prayer for return Posted: 06 Aug 2015 03:48 PM PDT Christian clerics prayed in the ruins of a monastery not far from jihadist positions in northern Iraq Thursday to mark a year since the exodus of Iraq's Christians from nearby ancestral lands. "We want the good people to hear our prayers from this place so they hurry and liberate our areas as quickly as possible," Yohanna Boutros Moshe, the Syrian Catholic Archbishop of Mosul, told AFP. The following day, the jihadist group seized Mosul, the country's second city, which was home to significant community of Christians. |
U.N. to host Libya talks on Monday in push for unity government Posted: 06 Aug 2015 02:47 PM PDT By Louis Charbonneau and Ayman al-Warfalli UNITED NATIONS/BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - The United Nations will convene a new round of Libya talks on Monday in Geneva in a push to persuade warring parties to agree on a unity government and end the violence gripping the oil producer, the U.N. said on Thursday. There are many challenges to ending Libya's armed conflict, four years after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi. Last month, some factions signed an initial U.N.-sponsored deal to form a unity government, but delegates from a parliament controlling the capital Tripoli stayed away. |
Why Congress Is Neglecting the War on ISIS Posted: 06 Aug 2015 02:15 PM PDT One year ago this week, President Obama formally launched a U.S.-led assault on ISIS, vowing to "degrade and eventually destroy" the blood-thirsty, highly expansionistic Islamic jihadist group in Iraq and Syria. Republican and Democratic leaders pressed Obama to submit his plan to Congress for review and a vote to provide him with fresh authorization for military action. After more than a decade of disappointing warfare in Afghanistan and Iraq, it seemed unfathomable that Congress would allow any president to pursue a dangerous new course in the war against Islamic terrorism without weighing in. |
Despite differences on Kurds, US and Turkey seek IS-free Syria zone Posted: 06 Aug 2015 02:10 PM PDT The United States and Turkey are forging an alliance of convenience to deal with the Syrian crisis, cooperating to create a zone free of jihadists despite sharp disagreements over the role of Kurdish fighters. After months of criticism that it was not doing enough to fight jihadists from the Islamic State group, Turkey last month made an about-turn in its strategy that was hailed by Washington and NATO. Ankara has opened its Incirlik airbase in southern Turkey to a US-led air coalition fighting IS, has carried out its own strikes against the group and arrested suspected IS members in Turkey. |
U.S. tightens visa waiver program amid foreign fighters concerns Posted: 06 Aug 2015 01:59 PM PDT The United States announced tighter security measures on Thursday for visitors from the 38 countries in its visa waiver program, which include European nations that have seen hundreds of residents traveling to fight with militant groups in Syria and Iraq. The changes require use of e-passports - paper passports that contain chips carrying biometric information - and expand use of U.S. air marshals on international flights, the Department of Homeland Security said. Some U.S. lawmakers have been urging tighter restrictions on the waiver program, which allows citizens from participating countries to enter the United States without a visa for stays of 90 days or less. |
IS affiliate claims responsibility for Saudi police bombing Posted: 06 Aug 2015 01:15 PM PDT RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — An allegedly new Islamic State affiliate in Saudi Arabia claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a mosque inside a police compound in the country's southwest on Thursday that killed at least 15 people, most of them members and recruits of the kingdom's special forces. |

Newlyweds Skip Traditional Banquet to Feed Thousands of Refugees Posted: 06 Aug 2015 12:08 PM PDT After saying, "I do," most newlyweds pose for pictures, toast with champagne, and sit down to a luxurious meal with family and friends. Enlisting their friends to dole out dinner from food trucks, Turkish couple Fethullah Üzümcüoğlu and Esra Polat celebrated their new life together by dining with 4,000 Syrian refugees. The groom's father, Ali Üzümcüoğlu, came up with the idea for the selfless wedding event and connected his son and daughter-in-law to aid organization Kimse Yok Mu. |
Turkish Kurd leader urges world to denounce 'unjust war' Posted: 06 Aug 2015 11:54 AM PDT Turkey's Kurdish political leader Selahattin Demirtas on Thursday urged the world to denounce Ankara's new "unjust war" on rebel Kurds and asked the EU to push clearly for a truce. During an unscheduled visit to Brussels, Demirtas told AFP he spoke by telephone last week with EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini and that he would meet with her top aide Stefano Manservisi here on Friday. "The European Union must very clearly and openly support negotiations between the PKK and Turkey," said the leader of the HDP party which scored a breakthrough in Turkish elections in June. |
U.S. reports 27 air strikes against Islamic State in Syria, Iraq Posted: 06 Aug 2015 11:02 AM PDT The United States and it allies conducted 27 air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq on Wednesday, the U.S. military said. Eleven air strikes were carried out in Syria, including seven near the city of Hasaka, the U.S. military said in a statement on Thursday. In Iraq, militant targets were hit in 16 strikes near eight different cities, it said. |
IS claims suicide bombing against Saudi police Posted: 06 Aug 2015 10:17 AM PDT An Islamic State group suicide bomber on Thursday detonated an explosives-packed vest in a mosque inside a Saudi special forces headquarters killing 15 people. In the southwestern city of Taif on July 3, a policeman was gunned down during a raid in which three people were arrested and IS flags found. |
Robert Gates Says U.S. Got ‘Out-Negotiated’ on Iran Deal, Backs It Anyway Posted: 06 Aug 2015 10:15 AM PDT Robert Gates, who served as Secretary of Defense for both George W. Bush and Barack Obama, has delivered an important if not ringing endorsement of the U.S.-Iran nuclear deal. Gates was harsh in his assessment of the Obama White House national security team in his book "Duty" published in 2014, calling the advisers a highly insular group of micro-managers who got in the way of Defense Department and intelligence agency operations. |
How a President Rubio Would Undo the Iran Deal Posted: 06 Aug 2015 09:22 AM PDT |
Posted: 06 Aug 2015 08:03 AM PDT Mike Huckabee's sin was being too vivid. Last week, after the Republican presidential hopeful said that by signing the Iran nuclear deal, President Barack Obama "would take the Israelis and basically march them to the door of the oven," a parade of organizations and politicians accused him of inflammatory language and bad taste. |
Explosion in eastern Iraq cuts power line from Iran Posted: 06 Aug 2015 07:18 AM PDT An explosion targeting a power installation in eastern Iraq has disrupted the flow of electricity from neighboring Iran, the electricity ministry said on Thursday, aggravating energy shortages amid a weeks-long heatwave. Ministry spokesman Musab al-Mudaris said an improvised explosive device had been planted under the power installation. "It also aims to agitate civilians against the Electricity Ministry and in turn the government." Mudaris added that the line had previously been targeted about a dozen times. |
Cincinnati Scenery to Serve as Backdrop for Injured Veterans' Journey to Recovery Posted: 06 Aug 2015 06:55 AM PDT Aimed at facilitating camaraderie and healing through various physical health and wellness activities, the three-day cycling event is often an introductory program for WWP veterans. Participants often find Soldier Ride to be a life-changing experience as they connect with fellow service members who are battling the same struggles. Soldier Ride presented by USAA is also being supported across the country by U-HAUL, a founding partner of Soldier Ride, and TREK, both proud supporters of WWP. |

Slow gains in Anbar set pace for Iraq's anti-IS offensive Posted: 06 Aug 2015 05:53 AM PDT By Ahmed Rasheed and Stephen Kalin BAGHDAD/BEIRUT (Reuters) - After only modest gains in the first few weeks of their drive to retake Anbar province, Iraqi government forces have given up hopes of swift advances against Islamic State militants. The campaign, launched after the provincial capital Ramadi fell in May, initially aimed at recapturing the city quickly but then shifted east to break the militants' 19-month grip on the city of Falluja and secure supply lines from Baghdad. Confronted with Anbar's sprawling terrain as well as the reality of a weakened fighting force, the sensitivity of sending Shi'ite militias into Sunni strongholds, and political tensions including an Iranian-Western fight for influence, Baghdad and its allies have had to modify expectations. |
Iran Nuclear Dispute Triggers Saber Rattling on Both Sides Posted: 06 Aug 2015 05:00 AM PDT The debate over the Iran nuclear deal doesn't formally begin until September, but the public already is being treated to extraordinary saber rattling and scare tactics from both sides of the controversy. President Obama and John Kerry warn that if the deal fails, Iran would win on both counts—they'd have trade and support from the U.N. and the other 5 countries, and they'd still develop a nuclear bomb, which would mean war. Some Republicans are so convinced that the deal that the U.S. and five other major powers negotiated with Iran to curb Tehran's development of a nuclear weapon in return for sanction relief is so bad for this country and Israel that they are already entertaining fantasies of military action against Iran if the deal falls apart. |
Turkey to boost security for energy infrastructure as PKK attacks rise Posted: 06 Aug 2015 02:27 AM PDT By Orhan Coskun and Humeyra Pamuk ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkey will deploy thermal cameras and horse-back patrols to heighten security around key oil and gas pipelines as Kurdish militant attacks increase, in a bid to safeguard energy supplies in the import-dependent country, energy officials said. Tighter security around energy infrastructure would be welcomed by Iraqi Kurdistan, whose oil exports to the world are piped through Turkey. Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) said in mid-July it was stepping up attacks over what it said were ceasefire violations by the Turkish state. |
US must seize chance to 'win trust' of Iranians: Zarif Posted: 06 Aug 2015 12:59 AM PDT Iran's foreign minister on Thursday called on the United States to "win the valuable trust" of Iranians after the "historic opportunity" created by Tehran's nuclear agreement with world powers. "It would be best to seize this historic opportunity to win the valuable trust of the Iranian people, which has been damaged through decades of hostile and wrong policies by the United States," Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a statement. "Congressional rejection of this deal leaves any US administration that is absolutely committed to preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon with one option: another war in the Middle East," Obama said. |
Iran, Turkey must work together to fight IS: Rouhani Posted: 06 Aug 2015 12:58 AM PDT Iran and Turkey must work with one another to root out the threat of extremism in the region, President Hassan Rouhani told his Turkish counterpart, the official IRNA news agency reported. The two countries "should achieve a joint plan and a practical solution, with each other's help, for uprooting terrorism in the region," Rouhani told Recep Tayyip Erdogan in a Wednesday night telephone call. "A consolidation and expansion of ties between Tehran and Ankara is of paramount importance to us," he said. |
Chad says security forces kill seven Boko Haram militants in clash Posted: 05 Aug 2015 11:40 PM PDT N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - Chadian forces killed seven Boko Haram militants in a clash on Wednesday, a security source said, as the country tries to secure islands on Lake Chad used by the insurgents as hideouts and bases to launch attacks. Chad said last week it killed 117 Boko Haram fighters as part of a two-week offensive on the lake that borders Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon. "Boko Haram fighters in boats opened fire on our forces on the island of Tchoukou Dallah. |

U.N. vote likely Friday on Syria gas attacks blame: diplomats Posted: 05 Aug 2015 05:04 PM PDT By Michelle Nichols UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The United Nations Security Council is likely to vote on Friday on a U.S. proposal to ask U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon and the global chemical weapons watchdog to assemble a team of investigators to lay blame for toxic gas attacks in Syria, diplomats said. Attributing responsibility for chemical weapons attacks would pave the way for action by the 15-member Security Council. Russia - which has veto power on the council - is a Syrian ally and has protected President Bashar al-Assad's government from any U.N. action during the four-year civil war. |
U.S. Launches First Drone Strike Against Islamic State From Turkey Posted: 05 Aug 2015 03:12 PM PDT The U.S. military launched its first strike against Islamic State from Incirlik Air Base in southern Turkey, the Pentagon said, reflecting a deepening security relationship between Washington and Ankara in the region. An armed drone carried out the strike in Syria on Tuesday, Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said on Wednesday. The beginning of strikes from Turkish soil is part of a major shift, agreed upon in July and long sought by Washington, to allow the U.S. military to use Incirlik to send fighter jets and armed drones to attack Islamic State targets. |
