U.S. reports 24 strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria Posted: 02 Aug 2015 01:56 PM PDT WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States and its allies carried out 18 air strikes against Islamic State in Iraq and six in Syria on Saturday, the U.S. military said on Sunday. Eighteen strikes in Iraq hit militant targets near seven different cities, including four each near Mosul and Ramadi, it said in a statement. "The targets in northern Iraq and inside Turkey are being identified by qualified personnel, based on confirmed visual data and as a result of a very meticilous and detailed study," the military said. Five killed in clashes near oil port in eastern Libya -medics Posted: 02 Aug 2015 02:59 AM PDT By Ayman al-Warfalli BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) - Five people were killed and 12 wounded during clashes in eastern Libya between forces loyal to its internationally recognised government and Islamist groups, medics said on Sunday. Fighting broke out on Saturday in the town of Ajdabiya, near the oil port of Brega, and a war plane attacked suspected Islamist positions to the south of the town, residents said. It was unclear whether the Islamist fighters were affiliated to Islamic State militants, who on Friday attacked a checkpoint manned by troops loyal to the official government outside Ajdabiya, killing five soldiers. |
