Pound plunges as UK ministers quit over Brexit deal Posted: 15 Nov 2018 02:25 AM PST The pound plunged against the dollar and euro Thursday after ministers, including Britain's Brexit secretary Dominic Raab, quit in protest against a draft deal to exit the EU. The latest market gyrations came as the nation's business sector gave a lukewarm verdict to the proposed agreement, and amid worries that British Prime Minister Theresa May could soon face a no-confidence vote. London's FTSE 100 index of major companies meanwhile dipped 0.1 percent to 7,026.17 points. |

The French leader, who was invited by King Mohammed VI, will attend a grand ceremony at Tangiers' newly renovated train station, with heavy security measures put in place. U.S. troops help fortify southern border as migrant caravan approaches Posted: 15 Nov 2018 08:56 AM PST Defense Secretary Jim Mattis defended the use of active duty troops on the U.S.-Mexican border, saying that in some ways it provides good training for war. The Pentagon chief said that within a week to 10 days the 5,800 troops currently deployed for the border mission will have accomplished all the tasks initially requested by Customs and Border Protection, although additional tasks are now being worked out between the Pentagon and the Department of Homeland Security. In addition to the 5,800 active duty troops in the border area, about 2,100 National Guard troops have been providing border support since April. |
California wildfires: Fears radioactive waste could be caught in destructive blaze Posted: 14 Nov 2018 09:08 AM PST An organisation of physicians fear radioactive waste could become a major issue after southern California's huge wildfire burned near a former nuclear test site. The organisation of Physicians for Social Responsibility said it was likely that smoke and ash from the fire spread radiological and chemical contamination that was in soil and vegetation near the Santa Susana Field Laboratory. Regulators in California said initial testing found no elevated levels of radiation of hazardous compounds after the blaze near the site. |
Key U.S. Senate Republican says acting Attorney General comfortable with Russia probe Posted: 15 Nov 2018 03:19 PM PST Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said on Thursday that acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who now oversees a probe of whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia, told him he had no concerns about Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading the investigation. "He's seen nothing out of bounds or no concerns at all about Mr. Mueller," Graham, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters in comments confirmed by his spokesman. Whitaker, a Trump loyalist and a former U.S. attorney for the southern district of Iowa, had criticized the Mueller probe as too far-reaching before he was appointed by Trump last week to run the Justice Department. |
Ohio family arrested for killing eight people Posted: 13 Nov 2018 05:53 PM PST Police in the US state of Ohio arrested a husband and wife and their two sons Tuesday over the "meticulously planned" murder of eight people -- seven members of the same family and a fiancee. George Wagner III, Angela Wagner and their sons George Wagner IV and Edward Wagner are accused of carrying out the April 2016 massacre in Peebles, a rural village 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of Cincinnati. "Members of one family conspired, planned, carried out and then allegedly covered up their violent act to wipe out members of another family," Pike County Sheriff Charles Reader told a news conference. |

Fatal infernos: California blazes grow as hundreds go missing Posted: 15 Nov 2018 05:15 AM PST The toll in the deadliest wildfires in recent California history climbed to 59 on Wednesday as authorities released a list of 130 people still missing. Most of those unaccounted for are from the Butte County town of Paradise, in northern California, which was virtually erased from the map by the so-called "Camp Fire" blaze that erupted last week. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea told journalists Wednesday evening that 461 search and rescue personnel and 22 cadaver dogs were involved in the effort to locate those missing and DNA testing was being expedited to identify the victims. |
France responds to Trump’s wild Twitter tirade: ‘Common decency would have been appropriate’ Posted: 14 Nov 2018 07:45 AM PST France has accused Donald Trump of a lack of "common decency" after the US president taunted Emmanuel Macron about his call for a European army. In a flurry of early morning tweets on Tuesday, Mr Trump said the US saved Parisians from "learning German" during the Second World War, blasted "not fair" French tariffs on American wines, and goaded Mr Macron over his "very low" approval ratings. "Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the US, China and Russia," Mr Trump tweeted. |
X-ray images show tools Khashoggi killers brought to Istanbul, Turkish paper claims Posted: 14 Nov 2018 10:58 AM PST The 15-strong Saudi kill team responsible for the murder of columnist Jamal Khashoggi carried luggage containing scissors, syringes and a stun gun, a pro-government Turkish paper has claimed. Sabah, a daily newspaper headquartered in Istanbul, published images on Tuesday purported to be airport X-ray scans of the team's bags as they left Istanbul for Riyadh on October 2, the day of Mr Khashoggi's murder. A number of tools and pieces of equipment can be seen, including walkie-talkies, a signal jammer and a pair of scissors. The bags were loaded onto two private jets but police were not able to open them due to diplomatic immunity, according to the report. The paper, which is close to Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), is one of a number of outlets that has published a steady stream of leaks providing lurid details of Khashoggi's death, a tactic seemingly designed to keep pressure on Riyadh and its allies. How the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi unfolded Mr Khashoggi, a regular contributor to the Washington Post, was killed in the kingdom's Istanbul consulate while attempting to secure paperwork that would allow him to remarry. According to Istanbul's chief prosecutor, he was strangled and his body dismembered soon after entering the building. Saudi officials initially denied all involvement but in the face of mounting international outrage admitted that the columnist had been killed as part of a "rogue" operation. The X-ray images were published as the New York Times reported that in an audio recording of the killing, one of the team responsible can be heard instructing a superior to "tell your boss" after the murder takes place, a suspected reference to Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi crown prince. Khashoggi was once close to the royal family but went into self-imposed exile last year and had since been critical of the Crown Prince in his writing. Mr Erdogan described the tape as a "calamity" this week and said it shocked even a Saudi intelligence officer who listened to it, according to local media. The Turkish president added that orders for the killing came from the highest levels of the kingdom. |
