Turkey lira crisis highlights emerging currencies plight Posted: 13 Aug 2018 07:50 AM PDT Much of the Turkish lira's plight may be homegrown, but it shares some key vulnerabilities with other emerging countries whose currencies are now also plunging as fear of contagion spreads, analysts say. South Africa, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Russia have all seen their currencies slip over the past week because, like Turkey, they remain heavily dependent on foreign capital, especially the dollar. "This is a typical 'flight to quality' move from foreign investors out of emerging markets to safer, developed countries," Agathe Demarais, lead Turkey analyst at the Economist Intelligence Unit, told AFP. |
Boy at New Mexico compound died in ritual ceremony, prosecutors say Posted: 13 Aug 2018 03:49 PM PDT Authorities found the remains at a ramshackle compound north of Taos where 11 other children were found alive but malnourished in a raid on the site 10 days ago. The prosecutor said during a court hearing for five adults arrested on charges of abusing the 11 children that they had been trained to use weapons and defend the compound in the event of an FBI raid. The adults, including three women who police said were the mothers of the 11 children, were charged with 11 counts of felony child abuse. |

Giuliani now says Trump never discussed Michael Flynn with Comey Posted: 12 Aug 2018 12:57 PM PDT 'There was no conversation about Michael Flynn,' Rudy Giuliani said on CNN's State of the Union show on Sunday, contradicting his previous position. Donald Trump will deny having ever discussed former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn with former FBI director James Comey, if he is questioned about it in a sit-down interview with special counsel Robert Mueller, according to the president's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani. |

Tesla: Musk's tweet a bridge too far? Posted: 11 Aug 2018 06:31 PM PDT Tesla chief executive Elon Musk got into legal hot water this week after announcing on Twitter he had sufficient financing already in hand to take the electric automaker private. Many in US financial circles are wondering where he will he get all this money, and have turned skeptical despite the reverence in which they normally hold Musk, who founded the company in 2003 to transform cars into tech marvels. The transaction could amount to at least $50 billion if Musk keeps his 20 percent stake in the company. |

Turkey says has action plan to ease market concerns; lira firms from record low Posted: 12 Aug 2018 02:54 PM PDT In an interview with Hurriyet newspaper published online, Albayrak described the lira's weakness as "an attack," echoing President Tayyip Erdogan - who is his father-in-law - and said the action plan was ready. "From Monday morning onwards our institutions will take the necessary steps and will share the announcements with the market," Albayrak said, without giving details on what the steps would be. Albayrak also said a plan has been prepared for banks and the real economy sector, including small to mid-sized businesses which are most affected by the foreign exchange fluctuations. |

Electrify America launches "Jetstones" ad campaign Posted: 13 Aug 2018 06:30 AM PDT If regular automakers aren't advertising their electric cars well enough, maybe purveyors of electric-car infrastructure can fill in the gaps. Electrify America, VW's court-mandated effort to build a nationwide DC fast-charge network, is launching its first ad campaign Monday on behalf of all electric cars. Israeli defence minister says more Gaza violence inevitable Posted: 13 Aug 2018 03:43 AM PDT Another round of fighting between Israel and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip is inevitable, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said Monday, despite attempts to reach a long-term truce. Lieberman said in a video statement distributed by his office that "the question is not to know if the next confrontation (with Hamas) will take place, but when". Lieberman also appeared to suggest that all Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip since protests and clashes along the border began on March 30 were linked to Hamas, the Islamist movement that runs the enclave. |

Posted: 12 Aug 2018 06:54 AM PDT The NGO rescue ship the Aquarius has called on European governments to offer it safe harbour after rescuing 141 migrants from the Mediterranean, saying it has been stranded at sea for more than two days. Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) and SOS Mediterranee, which jointly operate the Aquarius, said they had contacted authorities in Italy, Malta, Tunisia and Libya following Friday's rescues but have been denied a place to disembark. They called for urgent humanitarian assistance for those on board, most of whom were said to be from Somalia and Eritrea, were weak and malnourished, and included 67 unaccompanied minors. "What is of utmost importance is that the survivors are brought to a place of safety without delay, where their basic needs can be met and where they can be protected from abuse," said Nick Romaniuk, Search and Rescue Coordinator for SOS Mediterranee. The NGOs said that those on board reported encountering five boats which did not offer assistance, a "disturbing development" that suggested Italy's ban on rescue ships was deterring crews from helping migrants in distress. The Aquarius found itself at the centre of a major diplomatic standoff in June when both Italy and Malta turned it away, leaving it at sea with 630 migrants onboard for more than a week before it was able to dock in the Spanish port city of Valencia. It is unclear whether Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sanchez of the centre-left PSOE, will repeat that offer. He has since allowed a Spanish NGO boat, the Open Arms, to dock on three occasions. But he has been accused of failing to ensure local authorities have the resources to cope with the arrivals. Spain last month overtook Italy as the biggest European landing point for migrants, a development blamed largely on the clampdown in the Central Mediterranean. SOS Mediterranee and MSF said Europe was increasingly putting the coordination of rescues in the hands of Libyan authorities, but the latter did not have the "capacity" and had simply told it to contact others. Mr Sanchez this weekend met Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, to discuss the crisis. They laid out a proposal of EU aid to north African governments, improved European coordination on asylum and efforts against "racist tendencies" towards migrants in some member states. |
Posted: 12 Aug 2018 02:19 AM PDT The family of a "suicidal" airline employee who hijacked a passenger plane in Seattle have spoken of their shock and sadness at his death. Richard Russell, a ground service agent at Sea-Tac International Airport, took off in an empty 76-seater plane at the height of rush hour on Friday evening. The Horizon Airlines worker flew the plane for around an hour, committing a number of dangerous manoeuvres while being followed by military jets, before crashing into a small island in the Puget Sound at 8.47pm. |

Indonesia quake death toll tops 400 as more bodies recovered Posted: 12 Aug 2018 11:57 PM PDT The death toll from an earthquake on the Indonesian island of Lombok has topped 400, authorities said Monday, as bodies were still being recovered from the ruins of destroyed buildings. The shallow 6.9-magnitude quake on August 5 levelled tens of thousands of homes, mosques and businesses across Lombok, just a week after another tremor surged through the island and killed 17. "Search and rescue teams are still removing victims who were buried beneath collapsed buildings and landslides," said national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. |

Russia says will ditch U.S. securities amid sanctions: RIA Posted: 12 Aug 2018 06:21 AM PDT On Friday, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Russia would regard any U.S. move to curb the activities of its banks as a "declaration of economic war" and would take retaliatory action. Washington said on Wednesday it would impose fresh sanctions by the end of August after it determined that Moscow had used a nerve agent against a former Russian agent and his daughter in Britain, sending Russia's rouble currency to a two-year low. Speaking on a weekly TV talk show, Siluanov said the new U.S. sanctions, some of which could restrict purchases of Russian government bonds, were "unpleasant but not fatal". |

Philippines' Duterte to visit Israel next month Posted: 13 Aug 2018 04:45 AM PDT Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is to make an official visit to Israel next month, his government said Monday, nearly two years after he sparked outrage by likening his deadly drug war to the Holocaust. The September 2-5 trip will be the first by a Filipino leader since diplomatic ties were established between the two countries in 1967, a foreign department statement said. Duterte and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will discuss how to develop ties on issues including security and counter-terrorism, according to the statement. |
