Posted: 22 Jun 2018 08:28 AM PDT People working for Amazon have written to the company's CEO, Jeff Bezos, to protest the sale of facial recognition tools and other technology to police departments and government agencies. The workers cite the use of Amazon technology by the US Department of Homeland Security and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency, which have been criticised for enforcing Donald Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, which has seen parents separated from their children at the US border. Holocaust experts claim IBM's German subsidiary directly supplied the Nazis with technology which assisted the operation of concentration camps at Auschwitz and Treblinka. |

Koreas to hold reunions for war-separated families in August Posted: 22 Jun 2018 04:10 AM PDT North and South Korea agreed Friday to resume reunions for families separated by the Korean War in August -- the first such meetings since 2015 and the latest step in a remarkable diplomatic thaw on the peninsula. The resumption of the reunions was among the agreements reached between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and the South's president Moon Jae-in at their landmark summit in April. Officials from both sides met at the North's scenic Mount Kumgang resort on Friday and set a date for late August. |

WHAT'S HAPPENING: Trump order sows confusion on the border Posted: 22 Jun 2018 01:21 PM PDT President Donald Trump's administration on Friday worked on a plan to reunite separated families, and detained parents struggled to get in touch with their children, some of whom were being held hundreds of miles away. Trump himself took a hard line on the crisis, accusing the Democrats of telling "phony stories of sadness and grief." A look at the latest developments: |

This massive pile of barrels will break your bourbon-loving heart Posted: 23 Jun 2018 08:22 AM PDT To the bourbon fans out there: I'm sorry for what you're about to witness. I know it will pain you to see thousands of barrels piled up in a mess of broken wood and metal scraps rather than stacked neatly along the walls of your favorite distillery, but that's the unfortunate reality down in Bardstown, Ky. right now. SEE ALSO: 7 smoky beers to challenge your taste buds As the Courier-Journal reports, part of a warehouse at Barton 1792 Distillery collapsed on Friday, sending an estimated 9,000 barrels tumbling to the ground. No one was hurt. In a statement provided to the newspaper, the company said it's in the process of assessing the damage and determining which barrels can be saved. An image snapped by the Bardstown, Kentucky Fire Department shows the aftermath of the collapse.Image: Chief Billy Mattingly/AP/REX/ShutterstockStill, there's concern that leaking bourbon could contaminate the ground water. As the New York Times reports, though initial testing "came back clean," state officials from the Division of Waste Management and from the Division of Water plan to continue testing. Despite the collapse, the Courier-Journal reports that the distillery plans to stay open on Saturday for tours, as usual. The paper reports that the warehouse is just one of 29 warehouses on the distillery's property. While we're thrilled no one was hurt in the collapse, we'll be busy mourning the loss of what could be a serious amount of nice liquor. I mean, just look at the aerial footage, courtesy of CBS DFW: Pour one out for the barrels we've lost. WATCH: This gadget lets you pour wine without uncorking the bottle |

US Supreme Court says warrant needed to get cell phone location data Posted: 22 Jun 2018 08:10 AM PDT In a landmark digital privacy case, the US Supreme Court ruled Friday that police need a warrant before obtaining cell phone location data about a suspect from telecom companies. In a 5-4 decision, the nation's highest court said that cell phone location data is protected under the Fourth Amendment, which guards against unreasonable search and seizure. Data from the suspect's cell phone was used to show that he was in the vicinity when several robberies took place. |

Turkey's master campaigner, Erdogan faces biggest election challenge Posted: 22 Jun 2018 05:51 AM PDT By Tuvan Gumrukcu and Ece Toksabay ANKARA (Reuters) - After dominating Turkish politics for a decade and a half, President Tayyip Erdogan now faces his biggest electoral challenge, from a combative former teacher who has revitalized a dispirited opposition in less than two months. Turkey holds presidential and parliamentary elections on Sunday that are among the most important in its modern history. By calling early polls - they were originally set for November 2019 - Erdogan appeared to have wrongfooted his foes. |
Mystery extinct ape discovered in ancient Chinese imperial tomb Posted: 22 Jun 2018 03:22 AM PDT An entirely new species of ape has been discovered buried in an ancient tomb in central China. The remains of the now-extinct gibbon, which researchers have named Junzi imperialis, were found in a burial chamber in Shaanxi Province that dates back around 2,300 years. Researchers believe it may be the first ape species to have perished as a direct result of human activities such as hunting. "All of the world's apes - chimpanzees, gorillas, orangutans and gibbons - are threatened with extinction today due to human activities, but no ape species were thought to have become extinct as a result of historic hunting or habitat loss," note scientists at the Zoological Society of London, who led the research. "However, the discovery of the recently extinct Junzi changes this, and highlights the vulnerability of gibbons in particular." The skull of the extinct Junzi gibbon Credit: ZSL The Junzi are believed to have completely died out less than 300 years ago and could be one of a number of now-extinct gibbon species that once inhabited central China. Lead author Dr Samuel Turvey said the discovery suggests we are currently "underestimating the impact of humans on primate diversity". "These findings reveal the importance of using historical archives such as the archaeological record to inform our understanding of conservation and stress the need for greater international collaboration to protect surviving populations of gibbons in the wild," he added. A cranial reconstruction of the Junzi gibbon Credit: ZSL The partial cranium and lower jawbone of the ape were found in the burial chamber believed to belong to Lady Xia, the grandmother of China's first emperor, Qin Shihuang, who ordered the building of the Great Wall of China and the Terracotta Army sculptures. First excavated in 2004, the tomb contained 12 burial pits that contained animal remains, including leopards, lynx and black bears. Archaeologist Hu Songmei, of the Shaanxi institute, told Science that imperial Chinese burial chambers were commonly arranged in this manner so that the departed could "continue to enjoy the life they knew" in the afterlife. The Junzi gibbon was discovered in an ancient Chinese imperial tomb Credit: ZSL Gibbons were also regarded as high-status pets and considered to be wise and noble animals during the period of Emperor Qin's rule up until 210 BC. Today, gibbons are the most endangered of all the ape species due to a loss of their forest habitat, the illegal wildlife trade, the use of their body parts in Chinese medicines and poaching, according to the WWF. The world's most endangered species The Hainan gibbon, found on Hainan Island in southern China, is considered to be the world's rarest mammal, with only 26 still in existence. The full research has been published in the peer-reviewed journal Science. |

Ethiopian PM escapes grenade attack, one dead, scores hurt Posted: 23 Jun 2018 01:58 PM PDT By Aaron Maasho ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed survived a grenade attack on Saturday at a massive rally in support of his push for radical political and economic reforms, including a peace deal with regional arch-enemy Eritrea. Police said six suspects had been detained, without giving details, while state media said nine police officials, including the deputy commissioner of the Addis Ababa Police Commission, were being held over security failings. Despite boasting one of Africa's fastest growing economies, opponents say the benefits have not been shared fairly between ethnic groups and regions in the country, which has been run by the same ruling coalition for more than quarter of a century. |

US Border Patrol sets up surprise immigration checkpoint in Maine Posted: 22 Jun 2018 05:29 PM PDT US Border Patrol set up a temporary inland checkpoint on a Maine interstate, a move civil rights advocates say raises concerning questions about constitutional protections under the Trump administration. The inland checkpoint was first reported by the Bangor Daily News, which sent reporters to drive through the Interstate 95 stop and ask a few questions of the Border Patrol officers there. Drivers arriving at the checkpoint, which was there for 11 hours, were being asked citizenship questions before the agents were allowing them to proceed. |
Cameroonian town ravaged by Boko Haram bears deep scars Posted: 23 Jun 2018 03:46 AM PDT Amchidé (Cameroon) (AFP) - Burnt cars, houses torched or pockmarked by heavy shelling and shuttered schools mark the once bustling Cameroon town of Amchide which was a frontline in the war against Boko Haram. Most of the inhabitants fled after October 2014 when the town near the Nigerian border became the battleground between the Cameroonian army and Boko Haram fighters. Although some have returned after a call by the authorities to come home, Amchide is a shadow of its former self. |

The report said police concluded the crash, which has dealt Uber Technologies Inc a major setback in its efforts to develop self-driving cars, would have been "entirely avoidable" if Vasquez had been paying attention. Vasquez could face charges of vehicular manslaughter, according to the report, which was released late on Thursday in response to a public records request. |

Why China's Anti-Air Exercises in the South China Sea Should Spook the U.S. Military Posted: 23 Jun 2018 06:09 AM PDT The drills were reported by the Hong Kong–based South China Morning Post (SCMP), which cited an article in the People's Liberation Army Daily, the Chinese military's official newspaper. The drills simulated defeating an aerial attack, the SCMP said, and including "three target drones making flyovers of a ship formation at varying heights and directions." The PLA Daily report said that the drones were used to "precisely verify the feasibility and effectiveness to ensure a close stimulation of an aerial attack target." The Chinese military's paper added that drones had been used during exercises at least thirty times before. As the SCMP pointed out, the Chinese military didn't release many details about the drills, including the precise timing, location or what Chinese Navy ships participated. |
