Starbucks chief executive apologises for arrests of two black men Posted: 14 Apr 2018 11:51 PM PDT The men were accused of trespassing but have said they were waiting for a friend before ordering. "The video shot by customers is very hard to watch and the actions in it are not representative of our Starbucks mission and values," Johnson said in a statement. Philadelphia's police commissioner on Saturday defended the arrest, saying his officers had to act after Starbucks employees told them the pair were trespassing. |

Boy unearths legendary Danish king's trove in Germany Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:02 AM PDT A 13-year-old boy and an amateur archaeologist have unearthed a "significant" treasure trove in Germany which may have belonged to the legendary Danish king Harald Bluetooth who brought Christianity to Denmark. Rene Schoen and his student Luca Malaschnitschenko were looking for treasure using metal detectors in January on northern Ruegen island when they chanced upon what they initially thought was a worthless piece of aluminium. A dig covering 400 square metres (4,300 square feet) that finally started over the weekend by the regional archaeology service has since uncovered a trove believed linked to the Danish king who reigned from around 958 to 986. |
Britain pushes for Syrian ceasefire alongside US and France Posted: 15 Apr 2018 12:08 PM PDT The UK will join the US and France in a push for a peaceful path forward to the Syrian crisis, proposing a new United Nations-backed ceasefire. The three allies have produced a draft resolution that will be debated by the Security Council in New York, although it remains unclear when the vote will take place. It comes as Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, said new sanctions would be imposed on Russian businesses that help the Assad regime make and deploy chemical weapons. The proposed UN resolution includes a request for an independent investigation into the toxic gas attacks which killed more than forty civilians earlier this month and safe passage for aid convoys and medical evacuations. A fact-finding team from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons arrived in Damascus to "begin work" on Saturday, according to the organisation's Twitter feed. A Syrian man receives medical treatment after Assad regime forces conducted poisonous gas attacks on Duma Credit: Andalou The France-led initiative also demands that the Syrian government engage in peace talks "in good faith, constructively and without preconditions" and allows weapons inspectors into the country. France's ambassador to the United Nations, Francois Delattre, said that Syria's chemical weapons program must be dismantled in a "verifiable and irreversible way." "We must spare no effort to set up an international attribution mechanism, prevent impunity, and stop any repeat attempts by the Syrian regime." US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley Credit: LUCAS JACKSON Speaking to US media, Ms Haley defended the air strikes, warning that if action had not been taken, the United States could also become a target of chemical attacks. "This (a chemical attack) very easily could happen in the United States if we're not smart, and if we're not conscious of what's happening," she said. She also said that a new raft of Russian sanctions would be outlined Monday, by Steve Mnuchin, US treasury secretary. "They will be going directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to [Bashar] Assad and chemical weapons use," she told CBS News. Syria strikes | Read latest Western diplomats are preparing for diplomatic efforts to convince Russia to vote for a ceasefire. Moscow has used its veto 12 times to block action targeting its Syrian ally. Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French foreign minister, said renewed peace efforts should "begin with a ceasefire which is really respected this time." A ceasefire in February failed. President Emmanuel Macron was expected to strike a similar tone in a television interview on Sunday night. Mr Macron is seeking to position himself as a broker between Russia and the Western powers. France has maintained regular contacts with Russia despite heightened tensions. Hours before the strikes, the French president discussed Syria in a phone call with Vladimir Putin, his Russian counterpart. Mr Macron said he intended to go ahead with a planned state visit to Moscow at the end of next month. Next week he is to be hosted by Donald Trump on a state visit. In Germany, the president warned against a "dangerous alienation" from Russia, as tensions grow between the country and the West. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a Social Democrat (SPD) politician, told the country's Bild am Sonntag newspaper that "we should not designate Russia in general, the country and its people, as an enemy". |

Japan 'rare earth' haul sparks hopes of cutting China reliance Posted: 14 Apr 2018 08:40 PM PDT The discovery of potentially millions of tons of valuable "rare earth" elements in sea sludge off Japan has raised hopes that Asia's number-two economy can reduce its dependence on Chinese supply. A Japanese study published last week revealed an estimated 16 million tons of rare earths, enough to feed global demand on a "semi-infinite" basis, with deposits to last hundreds of years. The news made headlines internationally and in Japan, which is the world's second-largest consumer of these minerals but relies heavily on imports from China, which controls 90 percent of the highly strategic market. |
The Inside Story of How America, France and Great Britain Attacked Syria Posted: 16 Apr 2018 05:13 PM PDT The Pentagon has provided a detailed breakdown of exactly how the United States and its allies, France and Britain, struck at Syrian regime targets on April 13. As expected, the allied powers used cruise missiles to strike at the regime, both to minimize the danger to aircrews and as a precaution in case Russian air defenses attempted to intercept the attack. "The United States, the United Kingdom and France, three of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, conducted a proportional, precision, coordinated strike in response to the Syrian regime's continued use of chemical weapons," Joint Staff Director Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr. told reporters at the Pentagon on the morning of April 14. |
Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst reveals HIV diagnosis Posted: 16 Apr 2018 05:33 AM PDT Eurovision winner Conchita Wurst has revealed she is HIV positive and has been living with the virus for years. Wurst, the onstage alter-ego of drag queen Thomas Neuwirth, said she was force to reveal the news after an ex-boyfriend had "threatened to go public." "I will not give anyone the right to frighten me and influence my life," the 29-year old wrote on Instagram. "Coming out is better than being outed by a third party." Wurst shot to fame after winning the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest with her song Rise Like a Phoenix. Wurst wrote that she had been receiving regular treatment for "several years." A post shared by conchita (@conchitawurst) on Apr 15, 2018 at 12:01pm PDT "I hope to encourage (others) and make a step against the stigmatisation of people who through their own behaviour or through no fault of their own were infected with HIV," she said. "To my fans: the information about my hiv status may be new to you - my status is not! I'm well and... I'm stronger, more motivated and liberated than ever. Thank you for your support!" Wurst had wanted to keep the information secret to protect her family, who knew about her condition, and because it was only relevant to her former partners, she said. The Terrence Higgins trust, which campaigns on HIV issues, said that threatening to reveal someone's HIV diagnosis was "entirely wrong." Its chief executive, Ian Green applauded Wurst's response. "The decision to talk openly about your HIV status should be a personal one and not taken away or ever, ever used as a threat. Threatening to reveal someone's HIV status, under any circumstances, is entirely wrong," Green said. "What other health condition would be used as blackmail against someone? And we know this isn't something which only happens to those in the public eye. "We applaud Conchita for handling this with such dignity and including in her post that people living with HIV who are on effective treatment, like her, can't pass the virus on." |

Kentucky's Republican-majority House of Representatives passed a bipartisan resolution on Saturday criticizing the governor's comments, and the Republican state Senate president said Bevin should apologize, according to local media. Teachers in Kentucky, as well as in West Virginia, Oklahoma and Arizona, have held recent walkouts or protests demanding more funds for education, including teachers' salaries and pensions. |

May, Macron face lawmakers angry over Syria strikes Posted: 16 Apr 2018 03:41 AM PDT British Prime Minister Theresa May and French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday faced anger from lawmakers for conducting air strikes with the United States in Syria in their first major military action since coming to power. May was due to address MPs after proceeding with the joint strikes without prior parliamentary approval -- a sensitive subject in Britain where memories of participation in the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 are still raw. Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, has said the strikes were "legally questionable" and called for new legislation to stop governments launching military action without lawmakers' backing in most circumstances. |
Elon Musk admits robots are slowing down Tesla production – and says humans are the answer Posted: 16 Apr 2018 09:42 AM PDT Elon Musk has said that "excessive automation" is partly to blame for the serious backlog in production of Tesla cars, noting that human beings can in some situations do a better job. Mr Musk has come under fierce criticism for the delays facing his Model 3 sedan. "Yes, excessive automation at Tesla was a mistake," he said. "To be precise, my mistake. Humans are underrated." Caught in what Mr Musk has called "manufacturing hell", the electric car firm has failed to hit its weekly production target of 2,500 Model 3 vehicles in the first quarter of 2018, fostering doubt within the industry that Tesla will be able to hit its 5,000-a-week target in three months time. "We had this crazy, complex network of conveyor belts. And it was not working, so we got rid of that whole thing," he said. "We got complacent about some of the things that we felt were our core technology. "We put too much new technology into the Model 3 all at once. This should have been staged." In February Elon Musk sent a red Tesla into space Credit: SpaceX Mr Musk, on a tour of the factory for CBS News, admitted that he sometimes slept at the factory when he was overwhelmed with work, and said the criticism was affecting him. "When things get really intense, I don't have time to go home and shower and change, so I just sleep here," the tech billionaire said. "Last time I was here, I actually slept literally on the floor, because the couch was too narrow." In the past month, Tesla has issued a voluntary recall of 123,000 of its older Model S vehicles, dealt with a fatal crash of a vehicle equipped with its semi-autonomous driving system and suffered a downgrade of its credit status. But Mr Musk said his immediate priority was solving production delays for the company's Model 3 sedan. "I'm definitely under stress, so if I seem like I'm not under stress then I'm going to be clear, I'm definitely under stress," he said. |

Syrian air defenses shoot down missiles in Homs: state TV Posted: 16 Apr 2018 04:30 PM PDT Syrian anti-aircraft defenses shot down missiles that hit the Syrian air base of Shayrat in Homs province late Monday night, Syrian state television said. State television showed pictures of a missile that was shot in the air above the air base only days after a U.S., British and French attack on Syrian targets in retaliation for a suspected chemical attack on the city of Douma on the outskirts of Damascus A Pentagon spokesman said there was no U.S. military activity in that area at this time. Shayrat airbase was targeted last year in a U.S. cruise missile attack in response to a chemical attack that killed at least 70 people, including children on the rebel held town of Khan Sheikhoun. |

NATO allies, including France, have become wary of the flourishing friendship between Ankara and Moscow based on joint efforts to end the seven-year Syrian civil war. |

Merkel's tougher Russia stance meets resistance in Germany Posted: 16 Apr 2018 08:55 AM PDT By Markus Wacket and Thomas Escritt BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's Europe minister called on Monday for a new policy of easing tensions with Russia, adding to a chorus of voices pressing Chancellor Angela Merkel to moderate her hardened stance towards the Kremlin. The conservative chancellor swung behind Britain after the poison attack on a former Russian double agent in England last month, expelling four diplomats despite uneasiness among a political class that is wary of confrontation with Germany's giant eastern neighbour. Europe Minister Michael Roth, a member of the Social Democrat party (SPD), said that while the European Union needed a united front on Russia, sanctions should aim to bring Moscow to the negotiating table. |
