Sherman: ruthless tycoon who revolutionized Canada drug industry Posted: 18 Dec 2017 05:51 PM PST Barry Sherman drove an old car and gave away tens of millions of dollars to charities while building Apotex into one of Canada's largest pharmaceutical companies. Sherman fought as many as 100 battles at a time in court to challenge drug patents and make way for Apotex's generic prescriptions, or to fend off cousins' claims to the company he founded in 1974. "Barry and Honey were kind, good people who will be greatly missed," Toronto Mayor John Tory said in comments that typified politicians' reactions to their death. |

Chinese convicts executed after stadium trial Posted: 18 Dec 2017 02:20 AM PST Thousands of spectators filled a stadium in China to watch 10 suspects be sentenced to death for crimes ranging from drug-dealing to homicide before they were taken away to be executed at the weekend. An online video of the rare public trial, held in southern Guangdong province on Saturday, showed the handcuffed suspects paraded around a track by uniformed police officers as onlookers watched from the sidelines. Rights groups say China executes more people than any other country, but Beijing does not give figures on the death penalty, regarding the statistics as state secrets. |

Israel strikes Hamas targets in Gaza after Palestinian rocket attacks Posted: 18 Dec 2017 12:28 AM PST The Israeli military said it attacked a Hamas training compound in Gaza on Monday in response to rocket strikes from the Palestinian enclave, which have surged since U.S. President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital on Dec 6. Neither side reported any casualties in the overnight shelling exchange, which occurred days before U.S. Vice President Mike Pence visits Israel and neighboring Egypt, which also borders Gaza and is involved in its internal politics. Militants in Gaza, territory controlled by the Hamas Islamist group, have launched more than a dozen rockets into southern Israel over the last two weeks, the most intensive attacks since a seven-week-long Gaza war in 2014. |
