New riots over police shooting raise the question: What is it about St. Louis? Posted: 19 Sep 2017 02:03 PM PDT In St. Louis, protests over the acquittal of a former police officer in the fatal shooting of a black motorist have degenerated into violent clashes with police. Problems between police and the black community exist well beyond St. Louis and nearby Ferguson. But this week's clashes suggest that racial problems run deep here. |

U.S. cracks down on debt collection of private student loans Posted: 19 Sep 2017 07:32 AM PDT (This September 18 story corrects amount to $21.6 million from $26.1 million in first, 10th paragraphs) By Lisa Lambert WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. consumer financial watchdog on Monday ordered National College Student Loan Trusts and its debt collector, Transworld Systems Inc, to pay at least $21.6 million for attempting to collect on possibly non-existent or out-of-date loans. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau alleged that the companies sued borrowers without being able to prove the debt was owed or pursued collection on loans that were too old to sue over, and relied on false and misleading legal documents. The CFPB said the trusts had filed at least 486 lawsuits on debt where the statute of limitations for collections had expired. |

Stop 'escalation,' Spain PM tells Catalan separatists as protests rage Posted: 20 Sep 2017 02:08 PM PDT Spain's prime minister called Wednesday on Catalan separatist leaders to end their "escalation" as several thousand people took to the streets of Barcelona to protest at Madrid's attempts to stop a banned referendum on independence. "Stop this escalation of radicalism and disobedience once and for all," Mariano Rajoy said in a televised statement as protesters remained in the centre of the Mediterranean seaside city after a day-long demonstration that headed into the night. Shouting "we will vote," independence supporters started their gathering on Wednesday morning after police detained 14 Catalan government officials, raising tensions as Madrid pulls out the stops to prevent regional separatist leaders from holding the vote on October 1. |

U.S. home sales hit 12-month low, Harvey weighs on Houston Posted: 20 Sep 2017 11:42 AM PDT By Lucia Mutikani WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. home resales fell to their lowest in a year in August as Hurricane Harvey depressed activity in Houston and a persistent shortage of properties on the market sidelined buyers. The third straightly monthly decline in sales reported by the National Association of Realtors on Wednesday came on the heels of data on Tuesday showing a drop in homebuilding activity in August. The reports suggest housing will probably weigh on economic growth again in the third quarter. |

Police said that before dying in hospital da Costa identified the man who shot him. They are currently trying to locate the suspect, who is already known to local police. Emma Kelty Credit: Twitter/Emt101s Police believe that da Costa was the leader of the local gang of pirates responsible for killing Miss Kelty. A police spokeswoman said: "After killing Emma and stealing her money and possessions, the suspects celebrated and drew a lot of attention to themselves. Other criminals came looking for them." So in or near coari (100km away) i will have my boat stolen and i will be killed too. Two other members of the gang have also been arrested. The police are hunting for three other men linked with the attack and are trying to track down the stolen goods. The search for Miss Kelty was launched after she triggered a distress signal at about the same time as the attack is believed to have occurred. Her kayak was discovered on a lawless stretch of beach along with some of her belongings. Three days before she was last heard from, Miss Kelty wrote on Facebook on September 10: "So in or near coari (100km away) i will have my boat stolen and i will be killed too. Nice." |
