Would you pay $65 a month for cell service from Comcast? Posted: 06 Apr 2017 10:30 AM PDT Are you one of the three people in America who's always wanted to get cell service from America's most-hated company? Well, good news: Comcast has taken time out of its busy schedule of customer service, and put together a cellphone division. Sometime in the "near future," Comcast will launch Xfinity Mobile, a virtual cell company operating on Verizon's towers. Initially, service will only be open to the company's existing customers, so you'll need to have Comcast cable, internet or home phone to qualify. Details on the plans are scarce for now, but we know that pricing will start at $65 per month for unlimited data. That price can drop as low as $45 per month depending on your cable package, as Comcast seems to intend to bundle the wireless service heavily with its other plans. There's also a pay-as-you-go service for $12 per gigabyte, which thanks to the lack of line access fees, could work out to be a good deal for low-use customers. When it launches, Comcast's service will support the most recent phones from Apple, Samsung and LG. The selection is far from exhaustive, but with the most recent Galaxy and iPhone models available, it should be enough for most users. Comcast's big trick in this whole thing is to try and use its existing Wi-Fi network to reduce the load on Verizon's cell network. Comcast has access to 16 million Wi-Fi hotspots across the country, including many piggybacking off residential home internet. The idea is that whenever an Xfinity Mobile subscriber is within range of a Wi-Fi hotspot, their phone will switch off the LTE network and onto Wi-Fi. It's supposed to reduce the load on Verizon's network and ultimately cost less money, but it could end up being a headache for Comcast. Switching off between Wi-Fi and LTE is already a headache for many users; hopping between hundreds of different Wi-Fi networks could prove to be incredibly frustrating for subscribers. But then again, it wouldn't be a Comcast program without a little bit of customer frustration, so it all sounds about right.

Astronomers just discovered something awesome about the most Earth-like planet ever found Posted: 06 Apr 2017 03:19 PM PDT Do you like Earth? Yeah, it's pretty neat, huh? Well despite living on a planet as awesome as our own, astronomers are super eager to find more Earths, just for fun. A planet called Gliese 1132 B (GJ 1132b if you feel like making it slightly shorter) is one such planet. It's called a "Super Earth" because it's larger than our own planet, but is thought to be made of similar stuff, and researchers just discovered something extremely awesome that makes GJ 1132b the most Earth-like exoplanet humans have ever found: it has an atmosphere. Finding planets in the depths of space that bear similarities to Earth is a long and complicated process. First we have to find the planet itself, then we have to determine its size, take an educated guess as to what it's made out of, and figure out how far away it sits from its star. If all of those tests, readings, and measurements come back in the right neighborhood, scientists have to determine if the world has an atmosphere, because without that there's essentially zero chance that life is or could be supported on its surface. GJ 1132b has managed to make it past all of those hurdles, but even that strict criteria doesn't confirm the planet's ability to host living things. The planet is thought to be quite hot, with temperatures at or above those of Venus, which is hundreds of degrees hotter than Earth. If life does exist on the planet, it could be dramatically different from anything humans have ever imagined, but we won't know for certain for a long while. In the meantime, researchers are suggesting that observatories around the world give the planet some special attention going forward.

But there was also a first that Apple fans weren't so happy about: the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus marked the first time Apple reused the same iPhone design for the third consecutive year. The iPhone has always felt like it was ahead of the curve, but that changed in 2017 as the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8 were introduced. These sleek new smartphones feature next-generation designs that leave Apple's iPhone design from 2014 in the dust. That's right, the LG G6, Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. So many selfies Last but certainly not least, we have a complaint that iPhone users have had since practically the dawn of time. And the bad news that there is a 0% chance Apple will ever address it, because doing so would mean destroying Apple's iPhone ASPs. When it comes to Apple's latest iPhones, you can buy a 32GB model, a 128GB model or a 256GB model. Want more storage? The military says the charter -- Thailand's twentieth since 1932 -- will curb unrest in the politically-split kingdom and keep out corrupt lawmakers.
