Oman joins Saudi-led Islamic alliance: Gulf sources Posted: 28 Dec 2016 12:11 PM PST Oman, which has traditionally resisted Gulf Arab states' efforts to close ranks against Iran, has joined a Saudi-led coalition of Muslim countries to fight terrorism, Saudi and Gulf sources said on Wednesday. The sultanate indicated its willingness to take part in the 40-country alliance in a letter to Saudi Deputy Crown Prince and Defence Minister Mohammed bin Salman, the sources said. Although differences are rarely aired in public, Oman has long stood out among its Gulf allies. |
Iraqi forces in Mosul reinforced, new push against IS soon Posted: 28 Dec 2016 10:48 AM PST MOSUL, Iraq (AP) — Iraqi forces stalled for weeks on the edges of Mosul have been bolstered by reinforcements and are now ready, along with elite special forces, to launch a stepped up, three-pronged assault against Islamic State group militants in the city's eastern sector, ending a two-week lull in fighting, a top Iraqi general told The Associated Press. |

Syrian Kurds, allies set to approve new government blueprint Posted: 28 Dec 2016 06:45 AM PST By Tom Perry BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian Kurdish groups and their allies are expected to approve a blueprint for a system of federal government in northern Syria this week, Kurdish officials said, reaffirming their plans for autonomy as Russia and Turkey seek to revive diplomacy. The aim is to cement the autonomy of areas of northern Syria where Kurdish groups have already carved out self-governing regions since the start of the war in 2011, though Kurdish leaders say an independent state is not the goal. Increasing Kurdish influence in northern Syria has alarmed neighbouring Turkey, while the United States also opposed the federal plan first announced in March. |
In Iraq, disruptions of war fray families' support for the elderly Posted: 28 Dec 2016 05:27 AM PST A World Living Longer: Global aging is one of the greatest challenges of the century. And this is not just a "Western" problem. Politicians and policy makers around the world are rethinking healthcare networks, urban design, nursing care, and pension systems to prepare for it. The elderly themselves are key players to help turn this from challenge to opportunity. |
Number of migrants leaving Germany voluntarily rises in 2016 Posted: 28 Dec 2016 03:43 AM PST By Erik Kirschbaum BERLIN (Reuters) - Nearly 55,000 migrants who were not eligible for or were likely to be denied asylum left Germany voluntarily in 2016, up by 20,000 from the number who left of their own volition in 2015, the government said on Wednesday. "That's a considerable increase from last year," Interior Ministry spokesman Harald Neymanns told a news conference, saying the 2016 figure had climbed to 54,123 through Dec. 27. It's always preferable when people leave the country voluntarily instead of being deported." A Finance Ministry spokesman said the government would boost funding slightly to 150 million euros in 2017 to support efforts to encourage people to leave Germany. |

Air strikes kill 22 civilians in eastern Syria: monitor Posted: 28 Dec 2016 12:06 AM PST Air strikes carried out by unidentified aircraft killed at least 22 civilians, including 10 children, in a village held by the Islamic State group in eastern Syria, a monitor said Wednesday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the civilians were from two families at Hojna in Deir Ezzor, which borders Iraq and is the country's second biggest province after Homs. The oil-rich province of Deir Ezzor is almost totally under IS control and has been regularly targeted by a US-led military coalition. |

Before 'Fake News' Came False Prophecy Posted: 27 Dec 2016 03:00 AM PST The revelation that fake news deceived voters in the lead-up to the 2016 presidential election generated real outrage in the aftermath of Donald Trump's electoral victory. The top fake news stories garnered more clicks than the top real news stories on Facebook in the final three months of the campaign season. Fake news and other campaign fantasies led Oxford Dictionaries to select 'post-truth' as the word of the year for 2016. |
