France, U.S. target Islamic State with two strikes in Iraq Posted: 01 May 2016 11:13 AM PDT PARIS (Reuters) - French and U.S. jets destroyed an Islamic State site in Iraq used by the hardline Sunni Muslim insurgents to build large quantities of bombs and vehicles for suicide attacks, the French Defense Ministry said on Sunday. "The site that was destroyed is situated in Al Qaim, at the Iraqi-Syrian border, and required two separate strikes because of its size," the ministry said, adding that the strikes were carried out on Friday and Saturday. The real war against Islamic State Posted: 01 May 2016 11:06 AM PDT To defeat Islamic State – a group President Obama calls the West's "most urgent threat" – the United States and its allies are relying on more than military means. Merely retaking IS territory, such as the key city of Mosul in Iraq, would not be enough. The success of Iraq's elected government is as important as any fighter jet or coalition of nations. |

The first blast was near a local government building and the second one about 60 meters (65 yards) away at a bus station, police sources said. Islamic State said it had attacked a gathering of special forces in Samawa, 230 km (140 miles) south of the capital, with one car bomb and then blew up the second when security forces responded to the site. |

Daniel Berrigan, U.S. anti-war priest and poet, dies at 94 Posted: 30 Apr 2016 08:07 PM PDT Berrigan died at the Murray-Weigel Jesuit Community in New York's Bronx borough, America magazine said. A passionate critic of U.S. involvement in Vietnam, Berrigan gained worldwide attention in 1968 when he, his younger brother Philip, who was a Josephite priest, and seven other Catholics seized draft records from a Selective Service Office in Catonsville, Maryland. "It was Philip who came up with the idea," Berrigan told America in 2009. |
