Bush, the one-time frontrunner, scored just 7 percent in the latest Washington Post/ABC News national poll, while Rubio was only slightly ahead of him with 10 percent.

Open sectarianism in Saudi Arabia frightens Shi'ites

Posted: 26 Oct 2015 02:37 PM PDT

By Angus McDowall QATIF, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - When the gunshots rang out, Ali, a 26-year-old Saudi Arabian Shi'ite Muslim, thought they were fireworks. The Oct. 16 shooting was the fourth attack by Islamic State jihadists against Saudi Shi'ites within 12 months, leaving 40 dead and unnerving a community whose position in an ultra-strict Sunni kingdom has rarely felt so precarious. The fate of Saudi Arabia's 2 million or so Shi'ites is closely watched because of Riyadh's intimate involvement in the region's sectarian conflict through its rivalry with Iran and the teachings of its influential clergy that Shi'ism is heretical.

How Much Is Intervention in Syria Costing Russia?

Posted: 26 Oct 2015 12:30 PM PDT

Roughly a month after it first began deploying military personnel and equipment into Syria, the bills for Russia's intervention on behalf of the Assad regime are starting to stream in. "We believe a campaign like the one they are running there right now would cost between $2.3 [million] and $4 [million] a day," said Ben Moores, senior analyst at IHS Jane's, told The Financial Times. Low oil prices and sanctions by Western powers have walloped the Russian economy in recent years, though it's unclear how much of an impact a prolonged military intervention might have on the country's books, since defense spending is a closely guarded secret.

Islamic State, the militant group that seized swathes of northern and western Iraq last year, claimed responsibility for the blast in a statement distributed online by supporters.

By Victoria Bryan DUBLIN (Reuters) - The aviation industry is still struggling to gain better access to information on conflict zones, more than a year after the downing of a passenger plane over eastern Ukraine last year. In its report on the MH17 tragedy, published this month, the Dutch Safety Board said the responsibilities of states for ensuring the safety of their airspace should be more clearly defined and that the airspace should have been closed. The aviation safety arm of the United Nations, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), is looking at the recommendations made by the Dutch board and will decide whether a task force should be set up to put them in place.

Frame grab shows military jets of the Russian air force during a sortie in SyriaBy Margarita Antidze and Jack Stubbs GORI, Georgia/MOSCOW (Reuters) - In the courtyard of an apartment building in the town of Gori in ex-Soviet Georgia is a clue to whether Russia's air strikes on targets in Syria are as accurate as the Kremlin would like the rest of the world to believe. Fashioned out of fragments of ordnance is a makeshift shrine to the five residents killed during the Russian-Georgian war in August 2008 when a Russian air force jet, which Georgian defense officials believe was aiming for a nearby tank regiment, missed and hit the apartment building instead. Until Russia launched its military operation in Syria last month, the war in Georgia was the last time its air force had conducted air strikes in combat.

On Saturday, Jordan agreed to cooperate with Russia on their various air and ground campaigns against Islamic terrorists in Syria. Jordan has been among Washington's staunchest allies in the Middle East for decades, and this move makes them not only an ally of Russia in the fight against ISIS, but also of Iraq and Iran.
