White House: ISIS No. 2 killed in US drone strike in Iraq Posted: 22 Aug 2015 11:54 AM PDT The Islamic State's No. 2 leader was killed earlier this week during a US airstrike, the White House said Friday. Fadhil Ahmad al-Hayali, also known as Hajji Mutazz, was killed on August 18 while traveling near Mosul, Iraq with ISIS's media operative, known as Abu Abdullah, US National Security spokesperson Ned Price announced in a statement. Mr. Hayali was in charge of ISIS operations in Iraq and a key military planner, said Mr. Price. |

U.S.-led coalition stages 27 air strikes on Islamic State: statement Posted: 22 Aug 2015 10:14 AM PDT The United States and its coalition partners targeted Islamic State in 27 air strikes in Friday's round of daily attacks on the militant group in Iraq and Syria, the Command Joint Task Force said in a statement on Saturday. Twenty-two of the strikes were in Iraq with the greatest concentrations near the cities of Bayji and Mosul, where tactical units, buildings, fighting positions, weapons and vehicles were hit. Islamic State forces were hit near nine other Iraqi cities, the statement said. |

Security sources said Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militants attacked the outpost in the southeastern province of Sirnak at around 9:30 pm (1430 ET), prompting an hour-long firefight. Turkey has launched more than 400 air strikes against PKK camps in northern Iraq and southeastern Turkey since late July, in what it says is a response to mounting attacks on police officers and soldiers. |

Islamic State mortar fragments show traces of chemical arms: U.S. general Posted: 21 Aug 2015 07:28 PM PDT By David Alexander WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Fragments from mortars fired by Islamic State militants at Kurdish fighters in northern Iraq earlier this month tested positive in a U.S. military field analysis for sulfur mustard, a chemical weapons agent, a U.S. general said on Friday. Marine Corps Brigadier General Kevin Killea, chief of staff for operations against the group, said the test was not conclusive proof of chemical weapons use, and the fragments would be further tested to confirm the finding. Killea said that in addition to the Aug. 11 mortar attack, he was aware of at least two other claims of chemical weapons use by Islamic State. |
