Suicide bomber in burqa kills 15 people in Chad capital Posted: 11 Jul 2015 09:13 AM PDT By Madjiasra Nako and Moumine Ngarmbassa N'DJAMENA (Reuters) - A man dressed in a woman's burqa blew himself up in the main market in Chad's capital N'Djamena early on Saturday, killing 15 people and injuring 80, a police spokesman said. No group immediately claimed responsibility but Chad has blamed Boko Haram, the Islamist militant group based in neighboring Nigeria, for a series of bombings and shootings in recent weeks. Chad has been at the forefront of a regional military campaign against the group. |

U.S. reports 34 air strikes against Islamic State in Syria, Iraq Posted: 11 Jul 2015 08:06 AM PDT The United States and its allies carried out 34 air strikes against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq on Friday, the U.S. military said. Various Islamic State targets near the city of Hasaka were hit in 12 of the 17 strikes in Syria, a military statement said on Saturday. The allied forces also carried out 17 air strikes near eight cities in Iraq, including four near the northern city of Mosul, it said. |

China says Uighurs being sold as 'cannon fodder' for extremist groups Posted: 11 Jul 2015 01:40 AM PDT By Ben Blanchard BEIJING (Reuters) - Uighurs from China's Xinjiang are being given Turkish identity papers in Southeast Asia by Turkish diplomats and then taken to Turkey where some are sold to fight for groups like Islamic State as "cannon fodder", a senior Chinese official said. Beijing says the Turkic language-speaking Uighur minority are firstly Chinese nationals, and those who flee China should be returned to their home region in the far west of the country bordering central Asia. |
