The surprising lessons Millennials took from 9/11 Posted: 16 Jun 2015 02:40 PM PDT A new study suggests that Millennials' views of America's role in world have been shaped by 9/11 – but perhaps not the way some might expect. Millennials – those Americans born between 1980 and 1997 – are "deeply skeptical" of United States military intervention in foreign countries, the study by the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute notes. Instead, Millennials "perceive the world as significantly less threatening than their elders do, and therefore show increased support for a more restrained foreign policy even as they still support global engagement through diplomacy and trade," the report finds. |
Senate passes amendment to ban torture as US policy Posted: 16 Jun 2015 02:13 PM PDT WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate on Tuesday reaffirmed a ban against torturing detainees and moved ahead on a more than $600 billion defense policy bill that is entangled in a broader fight in Congress about caps on Pentagon and non-military spending. |
White House intruder gets 17-month jail term Posted: 16 Jun 2015 02:10 PM PDT A US war veteran who climbed over the White House fence and made it into the presidential mansion armed with a knife was sentenced Tuesday to 17 months in prison and three years' probation. Omar Gonzalez, who has had psychiatric problems since fighting in Iraq, got credit for time already spent in jail so he will only have to serve eight more months. "Good luck," Judge Rosemary Collyer said as she sentenced Gonzalez and expressed hope he will get his life together. |

US airpower takes out a bunch of Al Qaeda leaders. Effective warfare? Posted: 16 Jun 2015 01:05 PM PDT In the past few days the US killed Nasser al-Wuhayshi, Al Qaeda's second in command and leader of its powerful Yemen affiliate, and a group of Al Qaeda members gathered for a meeting west of Benghazi, Libya. The main target of the Libya attack, near the city of Ajdabiya, was Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the Algerian chief of the Al Qaeda affiliate for North Africa. If the US had killed Belmokhtar and Wuhayshi, that would make it two Al Qaeda heavy hitters down in as many days. |
IS suffers 'biggest setback' as Kurds take Syria border town Posted: 16 Jun 2015 01:00 PM PDT Akçakale (Turkey) (AFP) - Kurdish fighters seized control Tuesday of a key border town from the Islamic State group, cutting a major supply line in the biggest setback yet for the jihadists in Syria. From across the frontier in Turkey, the Kurds and allied Syrian rebels could be seen raising their banners in place of the black IS flag and taking up positions at the border post. The capture of Tal Abyad, used by IS as a gateway from Turkey to its de facto capital Raqa city, was "the biggest setback to IS since it announced its caliphate one year ago", said Rami Abdel Rahman, the head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. |
Bashir fiasco highlights world powers' failure: experts Posted: 16 Jun 2015 12:51 PM PDT South Africa's refusal to hand over Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir to the International Criminal Court was a fresh snub for the Dutch-based tribunal, highlighting its reliance on support from world powers to do its job, experts said. Bashir, who is wanted by the ICC for alleged genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes in Sudan's Darfur region, flew to South Africa on Saturday to attend an African Union summit. Seizing on his presence in the country, a South African rights group went to court to try have him arrested. |

Iran holds mass funeral for soldiers in killed '80s Iraq war Posted: 16 Jun 2015 11:55 AM PDT TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Tens of thousands of Iranians have attended a mass funeral for some 270 soldiers killed in the 1980s war against Iraq. |
Victories over Islamic State give Syria Kurds claim to bigger role Posted: 16 Jun 2015 11:37 AM PDT By Tom Perry BEIRUT (Reuters) - With a string of victories over Islamic State, Syria's Kurds are proving themselves an ever more dependable ally in the U.S.-led fight against the jihadists and building influence that will make them a force in Middle Eastern politics. Aided by U.S.-led air strikes, the Kurdish-led YPG militia may have dealt Islamic State its worst defeat to date in Syria by seizing the town of Tel Abyad at the Turkish border, cutting a supply route to the jihadists' de facto capital of Raqqa city. The Kurds in northern Syria now control an uninterrupted 400 km stretch of the Turkish frontier, positioning them to help secure an area where the United States says more needs to be done to stop the flow of fighters joining Islamic State. |
Kurds celebrate fall of Syrian border town, another blow to Islamic State Posted: 16 Jun 2015 11:32 AM PDT The fall of the strategic Syrian border town of Tell Abyad represents a significant blow to the self-described Islamic State, for which the town was a key transit point for its men and materiel. The ethnically mixed city, which forms a divided city with Turkey's Akcakale, also fits into Kurdish ambitions for a regional homeland. Recommended: How much do you know about the Islamic State? |
Al-Qaeda's Middle-Manager Problem Posted: 16 Jun 2015 11:30 AM PDT Nasir al-Wuhayshi, the leader of al-Qaeda's branch in Yemen, is now the second major jihadist figure since the weekend to be reported killed. News of his death in a Friday airstrike in Yemen surfaced on Monday, following weekend airstrikes in Libya that reportedly killed Mokhtar Belmokhtar, an Algerian terrorist affiliated with al-Qaeda in North Africa. U.S. officials have confirmed Wuhayshi's death but not that of Belmokhtar, who has been falsely reported killed several times in the past. |
Al-Qaida's No. 2 figure killed in US strike in Yemen Posted: 16 Jun 2015 11:24 AM PDT CAIRO (AP) — A U.S. airstrike has killed Al-Qaida's No. 2 leader, who commanded its powerful Yemeni affiliate, dealing the global network its biggest blow since the killing of Osama bin Laden and eliminating a charismatic leader at a time when it is vying with the Islamic State group for the mantle of global jihad. |

Israel says prepared for possible Syrian refugee throngs on Golan Posted: 16 Jun 2015 11:11 AM PDT By Dan Williams JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel signaled readiness on Tuesday to intervene if Syrian refugees were to throng to its armistice line on the Golan Heights, after Israel's Druze Arab minority stepped up a public campaign to help brethren caught up in the civil war next door. Israel has sought to keep out of the four-year-old crisis in Syria, an old foe from which it captured the strategic Golan in a 1967 conflict and where it fears more belligerent Islamist militants could take over should President Bashar al-Assad fall. |
Qaeda says senior commander killed in drone strike Posted: 16 Jun 2015 10:49 AM PDT Al-Qaeda confirmed that its second-in-command and the head of its powerful Yemeni branch was killed in a US drone strike, in the heaviest blow to the jihadist network since Osama bin Laden's death. Already struggling with the rise of rival jihadists from the Islamic State group, Al-Qaeda has suffered a series of setbacks in recent months with several commanders reported killed. The White House hailed the death as a "major blow" to the group. |
In UK, two husbands urge return of nine children they fear are Syria-bound Posted: 16 Jun 2015 10:45 AM PDT Two men in Britain appealed for the return of their wives and nine children on Tuesday, saying they feared they were traveling with another woman to Syria, where Islamic State militants have seized swaths of territory. British Muslims and sisters Khadija Dawood, Sugra Dawood and Zohra Dawood and their children, aged between three and 15, were reported missing five days ago. A lawyer for two of the husbands said the group, who all live in northern England, disappeared after traveling to Saudi Arabia and there are concerns they may have tried to join a brother who is suspected of fighting with IS militants in Syria. |

White House intruder sentenced to 17 months less time served Posted: 16 Jun 2015 10:43 AM PDT White House fence jumper Omar Gonzalez was sentenced on Tuesday to 17 months in U.S. prison minus time already served for bursting into the executive mansion with a knife last year. Gonzalez, a 43-year-old Army veteran from Copperas Cove, Texas, has already served nine months of jail time. Collyer said the sentence was long enough to serve as a deterrent and to guarantee that Gonzalez, a decorated Iraq War veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, has no gaps in mental health treatment and medication when he is released. |
Donald Trump announces run for the White House Posted: 16 Jun 2015 10:38 AM PDT Property tycoon Donald Trump, one of America's most flamboyant and outspoken billionaires, threw his hat into the 2016 race Tuesday for the White House, promising to make America great again. "I am officially running for president of the United States and we are going to make our country great again," he said from a podium bedecked in US flags at Trump Tower on New York's Fifth Avenue. Trump identifies as a Republican and has supported Republican candidates in the past. |
Nobel snub likely to be painful for Blatter Posted: 16 Jun 2015 10:35 AM PDT By Brian Homewood ZURICH (Reuters) - Beleaguered FIFA president Sepp Blatter has taken plenty of blows over the last few weeks, but the snub delivered by the Nobel Peace Center may be painful for a man who gives the impression that he wants to be seen as a statesman. Blatter, immensely proud of being the first FIFA president to take the World Cup to Africa when South Africa hosted the tournament in 2010, has long harbored lofty ambitions about soccer contributing to world peace and social harmony. |

Iran's Rouhani challenged by motion against minister Posted: 16 Jun 2015 09:53 AM PDT Iran's President Hassan Rouhani received a fresh challenge to his authority on Tuesday when 60 lawmakers filed impeachment papers seeking to sack his education minister. The motion, which accuses Ali Asghar Fani of being incapable of performing his duties, faces a vote in the conservative-dominated parliament on June 24, the official IRNA news agency reported. As in past impeachment actions, the effort to dismiss Fani may lead Rouhani to parliament to argue in his minister's defence. |
Iran buries 175 military divers killed in 1980s Iraq war Posted: 16 Jun 2015 08:39 AM PDT By Sam Wilkin DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran laid to rest 175 military divers in an emotional public funeral ceremony on Tuesday, almost three decades after they were captured in war with Iraq and, according to Iran's military, were buried alive. "The divers were the bravest of us... they gave their lives for the independence of our country and the success of our revolution," Mohsen Rezaie, who led the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) in the war, said in an address. "Iran's enemies stood by Saddam for the whole eight years of the Sacred Defence," he added, using a common Iranian term for the war in which Iraq's then-president Saddam Hussein, the aggressor, received extensive international support. |
More troops to Iraq? Six questions Pentagon needs to answer first Posted: 16 Jun 2015 08:30 AM PDT Calls for upwards of 10,000 US troops to be sent back to Iraq are now coming from lawmakers and heavy weight think tank analysts. But advocates for the war in Iraq have tended to want to get into the weeds before asking some of the more fundamental questions – including whether more US trainers would actually improve the situation on the ground. Is there a point, for example, at which US troops can salute smartly and declare "mission accomplished," serene in having achieved a clear goal that allows them to no longer feel responsible for what happens after they leave? 1. Would more US troops improve the situation in Iraq? |
Militants kill 10 members of Iraqi security forces Posted: 16 Jun 2015 08:07 AM PDT Militants killed 10 members of Iraq's security forces in towns in western Anbar Province on Tuesday, police sources said, in attacks highlighting the challenges the U.S.-backed government faces as it tries to slow Islamic State's advance. Anbar is currently the focus of efforts to stabilise Iraq, where the ultra-hardline group's control of one-third of the country has exacerbated a sectarian civil war. Islamic State militants fired mortar rounds and rockets towards the town of Amiriyat al-Falluja, killing five policemen and wounding six others, police sources said. |
Islamic State claims Tunisian checkpoint attack Posted: 16 Jun 2015 07:57 AM PDT Islamic State has claimed responsibility for an attack on a checkpoint in central Tunisia that killed three policemen, according to a statement carried on a jihadi social media account used by the group. The policemen were killed in clashes in Sidi Bouzid during an attack on Monday in which militants tried to kidnap eight people and opened fire on a military helicopter before one was shot and the other wounded and captured. The ultra-hardline Islamic State has declared a caliphate in large parts of Iraq and Syria that its insurgents control and is also active in Tunisia's chaotic neighbour Libya. |
Saddam's former army is secret of Baghdadi's success Posted: 16 Jun 2015 07:54 AM PDT By Samia Nakhoul BEIRUT (Reuters) - A year after declaring his caliphate, it is clear that the secret of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's success is the army and state he has built from the remnants of Saddam Hussein's military, and the allegiance he has won or coerced from alienated Sunni Muslims in Iraq, Syria, and beyond. In that year, the self-appointed caliph has expanded his turf from eastern Syria and western Iraq to include adherents in pockets of war-racked Libya and Egypt's lawless Sinai peninsula. |
U.S. coalition air strikes hit Islamic State near supply route Posted: 16 Jun 2015 07:35 AM PDT The United States and its allies said they have staged 25 air strikes in Iraq and Syria in the latest round of daily attacks on Islamic State, including strikes near the Turkey-Syria border where Kurds have pushed back against the militant group and cut a main supply route. In a statement, the joint task force conducting the operations said the five air strikes on Monday near Tel Abyad hit three large and two small units of Islamic State fighters and destroyed three of the militants' vehicles. Syrian Kurdish-led forces on Monday said they had captured the town from Islamic State in an advance backed by the U.S.-led air strikes, now controlling some 400 kilometers (250 miles) of the Syrian-Turkish border. |

Taliban urge Islamic State to stop 'interference' in Afghanistan Posted: 16 Jun 2015 04:23 AM PDT By Mirwais Harooni and Kay Johnson KABUL (Reuters) - The Afghan Taliban have sent a letter to Islamic State's leader urging the rival jihadist group to stop recruiting in Afghanistan, saying there is room for only "one flag, one leadership" in their fight to re-establish strict Islamist rule. The missive comes amid heavy fighting this week in eastern Afghanistan between the Taliban and breakaway factions who now swear allegiance to Islamic State, which in the past year seized large swaths of Iraq and Syria. The entry of Islamic State, while its numbers remain small, has complicated Afghanistan's already escalating war following the withdrawal of most foreign troops at the end of last year. |
Anger over Arab wars fuels jihadi threat in Saudi Arabia Posted: 16 Jun 2015 03:58 AM PDT By Angus McDowall RIYADH (Reuters) - Sophisticated attacks by an Islamic State branch in Saudi Arabia show the jihadist group is better established there than previously suspected, and that fueled by anger over Arab civil wars, Riyadh's militancy problem is not going away. It's not supposed to happen, so there clearly is a new network that the intelligence services are not completely in control of," said Thomas Hegghammer, author of Jihad in Saudi Arabia. The attacks have targeted members of the Shi'ite Muslim minority, policemen and Western expatriates, and represent the most serious militant threat inside the kingdom since it ended an al Qaeda campaign that lasted from 2003 to 2006. |

The 2015 Lowy Institute Poll found that 69 percent of Australians were in favour of the current involvement in air strikes against the jihadists and providing support for Iraqi security forces. At the same time, 55 percent said they believed Australia's involvement in Iraq increased the risk of terrorism at home now and 47 percent said it increased the risk "in the future". |
