Syrian jets pound insurgent-held town: monitor Posted: 26 Apr 2015 09:23 AM PDT Syrian jets killed at least 34 people in air strikes on the town of Jisr al-Shughour in northwestern Syria on Sunday, a group monitoring the war said, one day after it was seized by Islamist fighters closing in on government-held territory by the coast. Syrian state television said the military had ambushed some militants close to Jisr al-Shughour, which was captured on Saturday for the first time in the four-year conflict by a hardline Islamist alliance including al Qaeda. The Observatory said around 20 air strikes since late on Saturday had killed at least 34 people including insurgents and civilians, some of them children. Syrian television also reported that the insurgents had killed civilians, but the Observatory said only supporters of the government had been detained, and no one killed. |

Car bombs, suicide attack kill at least 22 in Iraq Posted: 26 Apr 2015 07:48 AM PDT At least 22 people were killed in explosions across Iraq on Sunday, including a suicide car bomb attack on a military post in western Anbar province, police and medical sources said. "Deash terrorists used a suicide car bomb attack to distract our soldiers and then they clashed with soldiers, but we managed to repel the attack," an army officer from Anbar operations command told Reuters, using a derogatory acronym for Islamic State. Another six people were killed and 17 others wounded when a car bomb went off near Khilani Square in central Baghdad, police and medical sources said. A car bomb killed three people and wounded seven in the town of Mahmoudiya, about 30 km (20 miles) south of Baghdad, police sources said. |

Islamic State or Al-Qaeda? Somalia's Shebab mulls future Posted: 26 Apr 2015 06:46 AM PDT Somalia's Shebab militants are divided over whether to maintain their allegiance to Al-Qaeda or shift to Islamic State, according to militant and security sources, analysts and clan elders. The division comes at a time when Islamic State in Iraq and Syria has become the jihadist franchise of choice, attracting fighters from abroad and other militant groups such as Boko Haram in Nigeria, while Al-Qaeda too has recently expanded its territory in Yemen. "Why is it a surprise to hear that Shebab may join the Islamic State? The admission comes at a time when Shebab is under pressure militarily but remains able to launch guerilla and terror attacks, seemingly at will, against civilian targets in Somalia and Kenya. |
Malaysia foils attacks in capital by suspected militants Posted: 26 Apr 2015 04:08 AM PDT Malaysian police have arrested 12 people linked to the militant group Islamic State and seized explosives, foiling a plan to attack several locations in and around the capital city. The male suspects, aged 17 to 41, were arrested on Saturday and Sunday from Ulu Langat and Cheras, suburbs near Kuala Lumpur, police chief Khalid Abu Baker said in a statement on Sunday. The plans were in response to calls by Islamic State (IS) to launch terrorist attacks on secular Islamic countries seen as "enemies of IS". Security was heightened in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday as leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) started arriving in Kuala Lumpur for the ASEAN summit, which opens officially on Monday. |
Key Jordan trade route cut after Syria border closure Posted: 26 Apr 2015 03:27 AM PDT When security fears forced Jordan to close its last border crossing with Syria this month, it severed its most important trade route to the outside, further straining an economy already hit by fallout from war. Car importer Mohammed Bustnje says he was among the lucky ones, losing only tens of thousands of dollars when looters sacked his offices and made off with televisions, air conditioning units, even doors and windows. Bustnje said he had had a premonition there would be trouble at the 700-hectare (1,730-acre) Jordanian-Syrian Free Zone, and moved all the vehicles he had warehoused there into Jordan. "Thank God," he said, "because the rest of the importers lost hundreds of cars" in looting after rebels seized the Syrian side of the crossing this month. |
Soccer-Queiroz to stay on as Iran coach after another U-turn Posted: 26 Apr 2015 03:14 AM PDT Carlos Queiroz has completed another surprise U-turn and agreed to stay on as Iran coach through the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign just weeks after resigning from the post for the second time. "I had a good session with the football federation and Iran's sports minister officials today. The former Real Madrid and Portugal manager said in March he would leave the post he has held since 2011 following a bust up with sporting authorities despite fan pleas for him to stay on. Reza Hosnikhu, an official brought in to settle the dispute with Iranian Football Federation (IFF) members and the firebrand coach, said the decision was final. |
U.S. official denies report of Islamic State plot in California Posted: 25 Apr 2015 09:40 PM PDT CNN reported on Saturday that the FBI was investigating a possible Islamic State-inspired terrorism plot in California but a U.S. law enforcement official in Los Angeles denied there was any such threat. "There is no known or specific threat to Los Angeles or any airport in our territory," an official in Los Angeles told Reuters. Homeland Security Department spokesman Peter Boogaard declined to discuss specific intelligence, but said the authorities had made a number of "security adjustments" in the last few months "reflecting an evolving threat picture." He said there was an increased law enforcement presence at U.S. federal facilities in February and many extra security arrangements were still in place. The United States is engaged in a military campaign with allies in the Middle East to fight Islamic State militants who have taken over parts of Iraq and Syria and created cells in other countries racked by conflict in the region. |
