Australia is part of a US-led coalition carrying out air strikes against IS, which spearheaded an offensive that overrun swathes of Iraq, and has also deployed special forces to assist Iraqi troops. Abbott visited Baghdad on Sunday to discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries. The IS-led offensive in Iraq began last June, and the group's rapid expansion and brutality in areas it controls in Iraq and neighbouring Syria eventually sparked an international campaign against it.

U.S., allies conduct air strikes in Syria, Iraq against Islamic State Posted: 04 Jan 2015 06:04 AM PST (Reuters) - The United States and its allies conducted seven air strikes on Islamic State targets in Syria and Iraq, the Combined Joint Task Force said on Sunday. Six of the air strikes hit Islamic State positions near Kobani, Syria, and one struck near Mosul, Iraq, the task force said in a statement. Suspected militants stab Tunisian policeman to death Posted: 04 Jan 2015 04:36 AM PST TUNIS (Reuters) - Suspected Islamist militants captured and killed a Tunisian police officer, stabbing him and slashing his throat as he travelled home off-duty south of the capital, the government said on Sunday. Nine suspected militants were arrested after the officer was killed on Saturday night near El Fahes in the Zaghouan region, around 60 km (37 miles) southwest of Tunis, the interior ministry said. Tunisia has been praised for its young democracy after its 2011 uprising toppled autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali and allowed free elections and a new constitution. ...

Politicians to blame for Iraq Sunni-Shiite strife: Maliki Posted: 03 Jan 2015 04:09 PM PST Iraqi Vice President Nuri al-Maliki, who was widely criticised for sectarian policies during his time as premier, said Sunday that politicians are to blame for the country's Sunni-Shiite strife. Maliki himself pursued policies that marginalised and angered members of Iraq's Sunni Arab minority, especially during his second term as premier. Sunni suspicion of the Shiite-led government was heightened by heavy-handed security operations in Sunni areas, and the arrest of senior Sunni politicians or their employees. Then last June, the Islamic State jihadist group -- which benefitted from Sunni disenchantment with Baghdad -- spearheaded a sweeping militant offensive that overran large parts of the country north and west of Baghdad.
