Nuri al-Maliki, Iraq's rebel-turned-PM Posted: 19 May 2014 10:25 AM PDT Nuri al-Maliki, Iraq's tough-talking but uncharismatic rebel-turned-leader, looked set to remain prime minister after results on Monday from April's general election put his party in the lead. Maliki's State of Law alliance won 92 out of 328 seats in parliament, with other blocs tallying between 19 and 29 seats, meaning he will need his rivals' support in order to keep the top job. Throughout, he has been seen as a rarity agreeable to both the United States, Iraq's former occupier, and Iran, its powerful Shiite-majority neighbour. Former US president George W. Bush has called Maliki "a good man with a difficult job", and Maliki himself has said he is "a friend of the United States, but... not America's man in Iraq". |
Iraq's Maliki wins at least 94 parliament seats in national election Posted: 19 May 2014 09:45 AM PDT By Ahmed Rasheed and Isra' al-Rube'ii BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Prime Minister Nouri Maliki won the largest share of Iraqi parliamentary seats in last month's national elections, dealing a blow to Shi'ite, Sunni and Kurdish rivals who opposed his serving a third term. Preliminary results on Monday showed Maliki won at least 94 seats, far more than his two main Shi'ite rivals, the movement of Muqtada Sadr, which picked up 28 seats, and the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI), which won 29 seats. The size of Maliki's victory, with 1,074,000 votes for his list in Baghdad alone, will make it much harder for any of his opponents to argue he is not the choice of the country's Shi'ite majority. It is particularly important to him because his government is fighting a war with armed Sunni groups, including the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), which holds territory in Syria and holds sway around central Iraq. |
The VA Healthcare Scandal Grows Posted: 19 May 2014 07:33 AM PDT Calls for the resignation of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki have turned from loud to deafening as word of a new scandal involving a Veterans Administration hospital in Albuquerque came across the transom. According to the Daily Beast, the Albuquerque VA is the latest hospital to be accused of maintaining a secret waiting list to cover up delays in treating veterans with serious and life-threatening illnesses. "The 'secret wait list' for patient appointments is being either moved or was destroyed after what happened in Phoenix," according to a doctor who works at the Albuquerque VA hospital and spoke exclusively with The Daily Beast. |

From deployed to employed: Nick Swaggert guides vets to civilian jobs Posted: 19 May 2014 06:18 AM PDT Each branch of the military offers basic training for recruits seeking to join the ranks. But what about a corporate basic training, a "reverse boot camp" engineered to acclimate returning veterans to corporate America? After 11 years as an infantry officer serving in the US Marine Corps, Nick Swaggert returned to civilian life only to ask himself that very question. "They don't see that experience in the military is valid when compared to civilian experience," Mr. Swaggert says. |
