It was the deadliest mass murder ever at a U.S. military base. The convictions mean Hasan could face the death penalty by lethal injection, possibly making him the first soldier to be executed by the U.S. military since 1961. ... |

'Core' US interests now at stake in Syria, Obama says. Will he take action? Posted: 23 Aug 2013 02:05 PM PDT President Obama's assertion that "core national interests" are now on the line following what looks increasingly to have been large-scale use of chemical weapons this week against rebel strongholds outside Damascus suggests the US is moving closer to some form of intervention in Syria. |

On Syria, Obama says no rush toward costly interventions Posted: 23 Aug 2013 12:43 PM PDT By Erika Solomon BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Barack Obama called the apparent gassing of hundreds of Syrian civilians a "big event of grave concern" but stressed on Friday he was in no rush to embroil Americans in a costly new war. As opponents of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad braved the frontlines around Damascus to smuggle out tissue samples from victims of Wednesday's mass poisoning, Obama brushed over an interviewer's reminder that he once called chemical weapons a "red line" that could trigger U.S. action. ... |

Elsewhere, stories proliferate about economic slowdowns in Peru and China, and protests in Brazil and Turkey (among others). Yet rather than viewing these events in the larger context of the past decade, the most common response is to write the obituary of emerging world development. ... |
