The three, two students from Kazakhstan and a U.S. citizen, were described as college friends of surviving bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19. They were not charged with direct involvement in the April 15 marathon bombings, which killed three people and injured 264. ... |
Syrian president showing renewed confidence Posted: 01 May 2013 03:09 PM PDT BEIRUT (AP) — Syrian President Bashar Assad and his allies are showing renewed confidence that the momentum in the civil war is shifting in their favor, due in part to the rapid rise of al-Qaida-linked extremists among the rebels and the world's reluctance to take forceful action to intervene in the fighting. |
At least 22 killed in Iraq attacks Posted: 01 May 2013 02:09 PM PDT By Kamal Naama RAMADI, Iraq (Reuters) - At least 22 people were killed in attacks across Iraq on Wednesday, police and medics said, after weeks of intensifying violence that threatens all-out sectarian conflict. Iraq has become increasingly volatile as the civil war in neighboring Syria strains fragile relations between Sunni and Shi'ite Muslims. Tensions are at their highest since U.S. troops pulled out of the country more than a year ago. In the north of the capital Baghdad, gunmen attacked a police station and occupied it after killing five policemen, medics and police said. ... |

Column: Obama can close Guantanamo Posted: 01 May 2013 12:47 PM PDT By Daphne Eviatar (Reuters) - At his news conference on Tuesday, President Barack Obama for the first time in years spoke about the controversial detention center at Guantanamo Bay, which he had promised to close when he first took office. "Guantanamo is not necessary to keep America safe," Obama said, responding to a reporter's question. "It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counterterrorism efforts. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed. ... |
Don't Believe the 2014 Midterm Myths — Believe the Math Posted: 01 May 2013 11:42 AM PDT Some people warned President Obama would lose in 2012 because no president since FDR had ever been reelected with an unemployment rate above 7.4 percent. The problem was that there had only been nine presidents who ran for reelection since FDR. That's just not a very big sample size. Obama proved those predictions wrong, winning with a 7.9 percent unemployment rate. The conventional wisdom going into the 2014 midterm elections is that Democrats are toast, because since 1938, the president's party has always lost a ton of seats on Congress in the sixth year of his presidency. ... |
AP Interview: Iraq official cites excessive force Posted: 01 May 2013 11:42 AM PDT BAGHDAD (AP) — The head of a committee established to investigate deadly clashes that erupted at a Sunni protest camp in Iraq last week says excessive force was used by security forces. |
Obama won't rush to act against Syria over chemical arms Posted: 01 May 2013 11:25 AM PDT By Steve Holland and Warren Strobel WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama signaled on Tuesday he is no rush to respond quickly to Syria's apparent use of chemical weapons, taking a cautious approach to the country's civil war, mirroring the views of the American public, most lawmakers and some U.S. allies. Obama, who last year declared that the use or deployment of chemical weapons by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad would cross a "red line," told a White House news conference there was evidence those weapons were used, but there was still much that U.S. ... |
Turkey investigates use of chemical weapons in Syria Posted: 01 May 2013 11:16 AM PDT By Ece Toksabay REYHANLI, Turkey (Reuters) - Turkey is testing blood samples taken from Syrian casualties brought over the border from fighting in recent days to determine whether they were victims of a chemical weapons attack, local government and health officials said on Wednesday. What could U.N. sleuths unearth at Iran's Parchin base? Posted: 01 May 2013 10:01 AM PDT By Fredrik Dahl SEIBERSDORF, Austria (Reuters) - The self-styled "Sherlock Holmeses" of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, now seeking access to a major Iranian base, say they have the capability to find tiny traces of atomic material at a site even if a country were to try to cover it up. In talks later this month, the International Atomic Energy Agency will once again press Tehran to allow its inspectors to visit Iran's sprawling Parchin military complex. That would enable them to bring back swab samples for thorough checks at the IAEA's high-tech laboratory near Vienna. ... |

How Workers Around the Globe Celebrate May Day Posted: 01 May 2013 08:10 AM PDT For much of the planet, today is not just the first day of May, it's International Labor Day, and that means marches and protests to honor the (mostly) downtrodden worker. Cities all over the globe have seen massive marches that are half-protest, half-party, and in some cases are met with stiff resistance from police. It's also a venue for the world's remaining socialist and communist movements to let their voice be heard. |

Similar concerns among Syria's other neighbors, including Turkey and Israel, are complicating an already disjointed world response to the bloody turmoil at the heart of the Middle East.
