U.S. judge throws out Iraq lawsuit over U.N. aid program Posted: 06 Feb 2013 01:31 PM PST NEW YORK (Reuters) - A U.S. judge on Wednesday dismissed Iraq's lawsuit accusing dozens of companies of conspiring with Saddam Hussein's regime to frustrate the United Nations' oil-for-food program, and depriving Iraqis of roughly $10 billion of essential aid. U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein in Manhattan said the government of Iraq could not recover damages and other remedies under an anti-racketeering law because most of the wrongful conduct took place in foreign countries. ... |
The Scope of America's World War Drone Posted: 06 Feb 2013 01:20 PM PST The CIA drone program sure feels like a war: unmanned aircraft incinerating thousands of terrorists we're at war with, as well as some civilians. And if you look at the reach of the program — now that everyone seems to be looking at the reach of the program again — well, it's nearly worldwide. American drone strikes haven't led to casualties near what the 20th century's world wars caused, but it covers almost as much geography. A few years into the Iraq war, the Bush administration tried to coin the term Global War on Terror. ... |

Joe Biden, Obama's "Mr Fix-it," extends his clout abroad Posted: 06 Feb 2013 09:12 AM PST WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Vice President Joe Biden, already deeply immersed in high-profile domestic policy, is finding that his clout extends to foreign affairs as well, as he plays a top surrogate role for President Barack Obama in the early days of their second term. Biden is now in many ways viewed as Obama's "Mr. Fix-it," who struck a crucial budget deal in January and who is able to navigate his way comfortably through Washington's complex power structure with a back-slapping joviality that Democrats find endearing despite the occasional verbal misstep. ... |

Don't Expect Much From Obama's Trip to Israel Posted: 06 Feb 2013 07:30 AM PST The last time Barack Obama visited Israel, in 2008, was actually the first time he had a run-in with Benjamin Netanyahu. Both men were then only candidates for top office. According to an account given to me at the time by Netanyahu's national security adviser, Uzi Arad, Netanyahu delivered the first of his many lectures to Obama on that trip. The Israeli hard-liner imperiously told then-Sen. Obama that the problem of Iran and its nuclear program must be solved before the Palestinian issue. ... |
