Syrian National Council elects Kurd as its new leader Posted: 09 Jun 2012 04:37 PM PDT ISTANBUL (Reuters) - The main Syrian opposition umbrella group, the Syrian National Council, elected Kurdish activist Abdelbasset Sida as its leader at a meeting in Istanbul on Sunday, a council statement said. Sida, who has been living in exile in Sweden for many years, was the only candidate for the three-month presidency of the SNC at a meeting of 33 members of the councils' general secretariat. The 56-year-old succeeds Burhan Ghalioun, a liberal opposition figure who had presided over the council since it was formed in August of last year. ... |

Bombs target Iraq oil pipelines, exports not hit Posted: 09 Jun 2012 05:33 AM PDT KIRKUK, Iraq (Reuters) - Two bombs exploded on Saturday close to minor oil pipelines carrying crude from a major oilfield near Iraq's northern city of Kirkuk, according to security and oil sources who said exports to the Ceyhan port in Turkey were not affected. The attack occurred near pipelines which carry oil from Bai Hassan oilfield to a degassing station in Kirkuk, an oil ministry spokesman and officials at state-run North Oil Company said. "Two bombs blew up near two oil wells in Bai Hassan oilfield without causing a fire. ... |
